Deshaun Watson in Miami, Tua in Houston?

Recommended Posts

As a Texans fan I hope not.  Until Watson actually says something publicly I would not put much faith in the reports.

If I was Houston, I would love for him to play hardball.  You're not winning anything in Houston any time soon anyway.  Go ahead and sit out so we can save some money while we lose.

Team's insensitivity to social justice, including the head coach, lol

Trade him to the Jets!

If Miami is smart, they don't do this deal.  Well, maybe.  LOL  I'm not a believer in Tua, but I assume the Dolphins are.  The porpoises' have just spent the last couple of seasons building the foundation of a team that can win for a long time.  They have more draft picks to build with.  The last thing they need is a $40M QB making it hard to maintain the status quo and losing the draft picks that make will continue to build the team.

I would take Watson if I was the Dolphins.

If they get Watson, only the Bills would be a better team in their division, this is now the right time for them to go for it. M

I agree. But, if it's Watson and Watts for Tua and a first. I'd be all in. (Houston first back to them)

That would be best for both sides.Especially Miami.

To me, it's all based on how people value picks, players, and money.  If I'm Miami and I have 4 more years of a cheap QB that I believe in, that's worth just as much as a more known commodity at 5x the cost.  I'd see Tua for Watson as a straight up deal.  If Houston wants a first round pick... and #3 overall on top of that?  Heck, I'd think they'd have to throw in Watt for me to make the deal.  If the Dolphins believe Tua is "the guy", Tua is worth just as much as Watson.

Don't think this trade would happen at all.Yes they gave away Hopkins and look what it cost them. Management needs to get their head outta the keister and get Watson help at the skill positions. It's not on Watson it's on the organization to put people around him so they can be successful. I'd almost bet JJ Watt  is done with Houston and will either get traded or retire.                                                             They need talent at all the skill positions (rb,wr,te). They have Fuller but that's not nearly enough. D. Johnson's not the long term answer at rb and they definitely need to try and get a knockout te. All the good teams have pretty good te's so I think they really need to address that position in the draft.            They're not gonna get everything they need in one year but if they can show Watson they are.going to get him talent to work with he'll stay. Hate to see them waste HIS talent.

Smart people in the organization to see that might be the case.

What about the N.Y. Jets? Just like Miami, they have cap room, and picks also.

Could a Sam Darnold, 2 firsts and a second get a deal done for Watson and Watts?

Jets GM: I made a trade and I need you to sign off on it and send it to the league office.

Jets owner:  Let's see, you're trading Sam, 2 first round picks, and a second round pick for Deshaun Watson and JJ Watt?

Jets GM: That's correct

Jets owner:  Nods.  Calls his secretary... "Janice, can you send in Bob and Joe?  Thank you."  Signs a paper and hands it to the GM.

Jets GM:  What's this?  What's going on?

Jets owner: That is your pink slip, you're fired.  That is security to escort you out.

Jets owner: Janice, I need to hire a new GM, one who isn't an idiot.  Can you get me a list of candidates?  Thank you.

In what sense?

You're making a black person an underling of a white person, and calling someone a person's father who isn't there father is a term of disrespect.  That'll get you cancelled nowadays.

Well then they shouldn't have taken the surname "Watt's son."  I didn't make him an underling; his name does.

In any case, you're the only one paying attention to the race of the people involved, so in THAT sense, YOU'RE the racist here.

So if the surnames were reversed: Deshaun Watt and J.J. Watson, you would have no issue with @Axe Elf's comment? Do you not see how ridiculous that is?

Relax.  It was a joke.  Apologies.  Should've known better.

Why wouldn't it be a good move?

Darnold is a career backup. You're not getting Lawrence. And all other QB's don't have the potential that Watson does. With no combine this year. A bad GM won't even have a workout to fall in love with some random kid.

I don't agree with your assessment of Darnold.  I think Adam Gase was the problem, just like he was in Miami, not Darnold.

JJ Watt is also a waste.  He has 1 yrsr left on his deal.  Even with Watson, the Jets still would be a sub .500 team with that roster.  Why trade a draft pick to pay a guy a lot of money who won't even help your team?

If instead of trading those picks, they should invest in a WR, a RB, and an OLine'man, they'd most likely be better off than trading all of those picks for Watson.  Come on, do you think Watson would fair much better with Perriman and Crowder as his WR's?  LOL, not a chance.... or Gore and Perine as his RB's?  Don't think so.

Another reason it's stupid is because the Jets are not a QB away.  They have a LOT of holes.  Watson only has 4 years left on his deal and you just traded away 37% of your premium picks to get him and have less capital to help him out. It'll take them at least the first two years to even build a decent foundation (or buy the talent through free agency), only to have a 2-year window before being in cap hell, and those 2 years won't even be that promising.

Thanks for your thoughts. I do believe the Jets are very viable partner. With the cap going down 20 million. Houston will have limited trade partner's for cap room, and draft assets.

I also view Watson as an absolute top stud, franchise difference making QB. A guy like that, you go get'em.

We'll see what happens.

My issues aren't with Watson, it's more that I think it's a massive overpay and/or, the trade doesn't make sense.  I don't think they're great partners at all... well, not at the compensation your stating.

Reason #1: If the Texans want the #2 overall pick, why would they even want Darnold?  They're going to take their guy at #2 and start him Day 1.  All they would be doing is reducing the value of Darnold if they wanted to trade him.  They'd have to trade him as well because his 5th year option is going to need to be picked up this year.  If they keep him, then they're going to pay him $25M to be a backup in 2 years?  I don't think so.  Taking Darnold makes no sense... meaning, he has no value.

Reason #2: Now that we've established that Darnold has no value, what would the Jets get for him in return?  Nothing.  At that point, you keep him, don't pick up his 5th year option and let him walk after next season and hope to get a compensatory pick for him.

Reason #3: Let's assume Darnold does have value.  That means that the Texans see him as their starter.  If that's the case, he has 1st round value.  That, plus the #2 overall pick is enough compensation.  Remember, the Texans are NOT trading from a position of leverage.  If they want a little extra to get the deal done?  Throw in a 4th.  If they want a 3rd... fine, but get their 4th in return.

Reason #4: JJ Watt has zero value to the Jets.  To spend $15M on a 1-year rental who will have no impact on your team is bailing out Houston.  If the Texans want to include Watt, then to me, that's value from the Jets' perspective and reduces the return.  I see that as similar to the Denver / Browns trade involving Osweiler.  The Jets would be taking Watt off their hands for the cap savings.

To me, a reasonable deal would be #2 pick overall + a 2021 and 2022 3rd round picks for Watson and Watt.  Houston gets another shot at a franchise QB, two extra picks to build with, and $50M in cap savings.  The Jets spend their #2 pick on a QB and a $15M cap eater that you may get a compensatory pick for the following year.

The Jets would then not pick up Darnold's 5th year option and hope to get a compensatory pick for him in 2022.  If the Jets are lucky, they'll get picks for both Watt and Darnold to recoup what they gave the Texans.

I see no reason for the Jets to trade Darnold or take a QB at #2.  I think he's a franchise QB.  I'd trade down and get a boat load of picks and build around him.  I mean, you saw what the Jets gave up to get Darnold in the first place and you saw the impact that had on the roster.  Why would you want to do that again with Watson?  It's one thing to do that with a $6M rookie cap hit... it's another to do it with a $40M cap hit.

We all know that QB's have added value when it comes to the draft / draft value chart.  At 2600 points for the #2 pick, when that pick is a QB, it's basically 3500 points.  The right thing for the Jets to do is to trade the #2 pick to teams like Atlanta or Detroit (if they move on from Ryan and Stafford), or Denver.  Even if it's Denver at #9, they could get Denver's 1st and 2nd this year and 1st and 3rd next year.  At #9, they'd get one of the top 3 WR's in the draft... or one of the best OL in the draft to help build the line.  With a pair of top 10 picks in the 2nd round that they could use to upgrade their roster (more specifically), the WR and/or RB positions.

Of course though, that's just me.  I don't think Darnold is all that bad.  I actually think he can be really good.  Now Miami, that's a different story.  I don't believe in Tua.  I'd make that trade in a heartbeat.  That said, I think - as with the Jets - that top 3 pick is huge and has an absolute ton of value.  Though, in both cases, it doesn't make sense for Houston to trade for the QB if they're just going to use that top 3 pick on a QB.  It's wasting an asset.

Peter Schrager of GMF said he'd like to see DeShaun Watson in a 49ers uniform. I'd be thrilled if that happened. Jimmy G is NOT gonna win us a SB. Maybe John Lynch will have to work so.serious magic to get him. I'm sure it'd take this years first rounder(#12) and probably next years first rounder. Hell, through in Jimmy G too.                                                            We have two pretty decent young wr's in Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, a top 5 te in Kittle and decent rbs. I guess getting Watson is just a pipe dream right now but you never know. Regardless, I think it's time for the 49ers to move on from the Garrapolo project. Maybe a decent rookie QB could be available at.#12.

I would like to see him go to, the Panthers or the Colts.

But I think Wentz as a good shot to be with the Colts, and I like that move a lot.

It will be interesting to see where Watson ends up.  Carolina makes sense.  They have a top 10 pick, too late to get one of the top tier QB's, but if they get Bridewater in return, that certainly would work.  They'd only need to keep him for the 1 year and if they don't like what they see, they can move on from him next year with very little impact.
