Common misused sayings ....

Recommended Posts

I have heard “nip it in the butt” at least 4 times this month. - actually had to have a heated argument with one of them.

There may be more.

I never understood "the full nine yards." What a dumb phrase.

nine yards = fail = punt / turnover on downs

The bullets for the machine guns used in American combat planes of WW2 and since were in chains twenty-seven feet in length. Thus if a pilot was able to fire all his bullets off at one target he was said to have given his adversary 'the full nine yards'.”

That makes sense. I’d never heard the phrase until I was in Army basic training. None of my closest friends knew either. They had a good laugh though when I came up with’ “If you can’t complete it, at least put in enough effort so that you don’t get chewed out too badly.”

The Army could use a phrase for that. They’re plagued with a bunch of incompetent half-ass, lazy mfers. I’m surprised we win wars. We hypothesized that it’s because everyone competent with talent is one-and-done and only the useless idiots reenlist and stay in long enough to get positions of authority.

Criteria is plural.   The singular is criterion.

Data is a plural noun.  But not a mass noun.  The mass noun of data is datum.  It is incorrect to say "the data regarding covid infers x."  The correct version is "the datum regarding covid infers x".

Uninterested means not interested.  Disinterested means unbiased.

Enormousness means enormousness.  Enormity means extreme evil.

Fortunate means lucky.  Fortuitous means unplanned or coincidental.

Hung means suspended.  Hanged means suspended from the neck until dead.

Luxurious means luxurious.  Luxuriant means abundant.

Prescribe means to recommend.  Proscribe means to condemn.

Shrunk is past tense.  Shrank is past participle.  I shrank my shirt.  I've shrunk my shirt.

You're Mom

Nobody says that, do they? You are mom?  Really?
Well, there are quite a gaggle mouf breathers here that prolly posted it verbatim, I suppose.

In proper sentence structure it would be something like :
"Hey Strike, is YER MOM still sucking dik in fishtown for money?"

Not that I know your mom or anything :ninja:

Also, A great poster from the past here was Yer mom.

Irregardless….

Then if you point it out, instead of using “regardless” properly, they switch to “irrespective” - which is technically not WRONG, but has a bit of a different meaning. I guess they can’t fathom that the IR doesn’t belong at the beginning of their word.

And now the publishers of dictionaries have decided that since it’s used so widely, they will include it? Yes, let’s reward the people who cannot speak the language properly by changing it to fit them.

Gloucester...its GLOSTAH!!

My wife used to live in an apt in the Rochester suburb of Chili. Pronounced just like the food dish, right?  Nope.  They pronounce it as "Cheye Lie" with long I's instead.  Wtf?

Down in Portland there's a highway exit for a Couch Street. Of course they pronounce it as "Cooch".  The next exit is for Burnside so maybe it's an STD kinda thing. :dunno:
