Spin off: Fave 80s arcade games

Recommended Posts

We're talking the standalone, appliance sized arcade games from back in the day. not the crap that you plug in your television at home.

Stargate was my Jam.

I still have PTSD flashbacks from Star Castle.

My dad knew a guy that could get the original games back in the 80's for $250 and $25 if you wanted to switch chips in them for another game.

OMG! In Fox Hills Mall (Westfield Culver City) in California my all time favorite game in the arcade was Alien Syndrome followed by Ms. PAC Man

I never had more then $1 in quarters, usually less, lol.

I never made it farther then the 3rd level.

It says Sega but I played in an actual arcade.

We used a pencil.  But, yeah, you were toast if you just tried to tap with your hands.

Cut my teeth on Defender.  Loved that game.   They came out with Stargate which I liked but not as much.

Played asteroids a ton.   Got good.  Ramped up 11 million as best game. Yes  true.

All time favorite was Robotron.   Hard game that was a ton of fun to play.

Galaga got predictable after so many levels that you could roll over the score with ease, multiple times.

Never liked Pacman but did know a pattern up through the first banana level.  Hated Ms. Pacman

Crazy Climber was fun.  Never got good at it but did like it.

Dragon's Lair was super fun to play, until you figured out all the screens.

Video games were everywhere growing up.

Loved that game...just downloaded a Midway Arcade Origins for the Xbox, just to play that game.  Now I need to get a steering wheel, cause the D-pad aint cutting it.

Galaga's been mentioned, but I really liked the extremely simple Star Wars, lot of quarters went into this one.

Never really had a favorite one during the 80's. But I was a (still am) a wrestling nerd. A game came out in the early 90's called Wrestlefest. .50 cents to play. And I could beat it almost every time on the first try using the Ultimate Warrior and Ted DiBiase team.

Can't recall the exact name.  I think it was called "Night Driver"?  Basically a sit down driving game that was completely black except for white dots for the edges of the road.

Also liked some of the ones already mentioned: Zaxxon, Joust, Dig Dug.

Was Robotron the one with "intruder alert intruder alert"?  Or am I thinking of one called something like "Berzerk"?

No voices with Robotron.  That was berzerk.  With that stupid bouncy ball.

The other one that reminds me of was sinistar.  The voice would go RUN RUN RUN!!!

Asteroids and Ms. Pacman were big as there was a pizza place that I would go to that had them

Missile Command was also on the list because of a nearby place

My fraternity house had Galaga, so I got into that for a bit

Plenty of others that I dabbled in.

Me and two others did a charity thing / Challenge. Local pet store was going to donate X amount of dollars to a local charity if we played Missle Command for 24 hours straight on 2 quarters.
We did it. 2 playing at a time. One subbing for breaks.

*** I do not remember $$ amount but I do remember they were going to match our score but the owner quickly changed his mind when it became a reality. Local Wendy’s provided us free food and coffee

Rampage was one of my favorites - I saw somebody post a video earlier.

Mr. Do, Galaga, Zaxxon, Mario Bros

I had an Apple II at home so I didn’t play too many arcade games other than those ones. I played the Apple II versions of lots of arcade games though.
