Old Man Stagnation

Recommended Posts

So I've noticed something disturbing in myself, and I'm sure it applies to most of you as well.

I find more and more I'm retreating into my youth, the late 80s through early 00s. Watch movies from that Era a lot, re read books from that time, listen to music from that time...

I know that isn't good, as it just fossilizes you, but... there's just so little decent new crap out now, especially in music.

Thoughts?

I started watching Andy Griffith again the last month. I had enough of the MSM and nutcases that believe everything they say like gospel.

Those were better times. Nothing wrong with wanting more of something better than something worse. If you become less physically active, then you get fossilized though.

Oh and hell, I listen to stuff more that was created before I born than I listen to today's stuff.

Andrew McCarthy just had a book come out. I think it’s about him reliving the glory days with Downey jr and such. I’ll check it out . I know you read  a lot, but fiction drives me nuts  Wife is reading 1984. Is this the most boring book on the planet?? Christ

Yes. Happens to everyone, I bet. Would rather deal with something you know is good rather than risk the almost inevitable suckage of today.

Music is good today. Just different. Tv shows? Most are atrocious. Same with movies. Hard to find a GOOD movie that hasn’t had its main focus on being inclusive. That’s what’s dragging movies down today. Focused more on a diverse cast than acting ability and script writing.

Watched Scent of a Woman last night. Not even the waiters nor limo drivers were black. Nobody. Like they didn't even exist. A few latinos sprinkled in. Award nominations across the board. You are right. Any black actors in a film and the story is about their blackness no matter how minor the part.

I have a lot of nostalgia for that same time period definitely. I’m really glad to be the last generation to come to adulthood in a press-Internet age too.

I can’t relate to the music and movies stuff though. I think there are great music / movies being made today, they’re just not popular entertainment and it takes some digging around to find it.

I prefer the 80s and 90s way of life. I wish I could have lived during the 50s/60s or return to the values of that time period.

I still prefer old music, but TV is much better now. You can name a lot of bad current shows, but there are many excellent ones. There are so many choices now.

I'll agree on tv. That is the only form of media that hasn't gone to sh!t. Well, books too I guess.

Music and movies are sh!t.

I disagree on movies. Certainly a lot of the blockbuster ones are garbage these days, but that has frequently been the case. On the flip side you’ve got more access to smaller indies and foreign films than ever because of the 8,000 streaming services out there.

Music does suck, but I also think it’s probably just that I don’t have college buddies to direct me towards the good stuff anymore. My preferences basically froze following college.

imo..music these days is excellent.  New bands, new music by old bands.  War on Drugs, Idles, Fleet Foxes, Kurt Vile.  Modest mouse has a new album coming out, Dinosaur Jr just put one out, Tool.  The metal scene is amazing.  Indie chicks like Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy, Lucy Dacus, Courtney Barnett.  Khraungbhin..that live pitchfork thing they did is phenomenal.  I am bored by all of the old music that I listened to.  It is still great, bit I have just heard it so much.  I have been on a 90s Death Metal run, but mostly cause I didnt listen to that back then.

Yeah. I do that.  Music might be the one that bothers me the most.  I'm pretty tired of listening to the same old stuff, but I rarely hear anything new that's good, much less great.

I'm reading Lonesome Dove again now.  Prior to that, I read 4 books from the Middle Falls Time Travel Series that my son suggested just to have something different.  He knows I like time travel stuff, so it was fine, but not really great.

Movies and TV are very tough too.  Seemingly every show and/or movie has a preachy, woke, or LGBT message to it.  We're watching Start Up on Netflix right now.  It's a decent show, but it has all of the above.

I'm really thankful to have live sports, but they're so full of similar messages, it makes viewing less enjoyable.

I created an alias just to piss you off. You take this stuff too seriously dude. You want to know who I am. I’m an attorney from the US who fled to China to teach social studies because I just couldn’t hack it here.

I will watch the older shows and movies for nostalgia.  I think effects are leaps and bounds better now.  There was a long period of bad shows, but I think there is some excellent writing for the streamed series that have emerged over the past 5-10 years. Movies still seem rather predictable to me. Also do not love much of the more current music out there now.

I guess a good gauge would be comparing James Bond movies. Most people like Bond movies.

I gotta say, I like the older ones better. One of the more semi-recent ones, Casino Royale, was pretty good, but the newer ones overall, I don't think have been as good. Even with all the more recent special effects.

I agree about bond flicks.  Roger Moore was a boob, but the movies were still fun. Was a shame that when brosnen finally got the role, the writing became crappy.  I think of the new ones with Craig, only quantum of solace sucked. Casino royale was excellent. The others, I’d give about a B

Black shows suck now. Grew up watching The Jefferson’s, Good Times, Whats Happening and as I got older Martin and Living Color. Could you imagine watching something like “Blackish” now?
