How much can you bench press?

Recommended Posts

I've never done it but I bet I could get a hundred pounds over my head.

Haven't done a 1RM in a long time.  Last time I benched during 5/3/1 I did 215 for seven reps which calculates to 258 1RM.

Gave up benching with a bar many years ago, only use dumbbells. I'd like to think I could do my body weight of 190 lbs but, can't say for sure. I do 80 lb dumbbells occasionally, 3 or 4 reps.

I'm not anywhere near as strong as I was 10 years ago. Shoulders and elbows are shlt these days.

I'm a 3 handicap and can eat p**** with the best of them - luckily neither requires me to bench much.

I don't max anymore.  Haven't ever really.

My record lift(s) for bench are:

225 x 36

275 x 21

315 x somewhere between 12 and 15. I don't remember.

Got 225 x 33  this past Sunday night.

Is there any reason to do one max rep other than vanity?

That’s insane. I was proud of doing 12 Reps of 170 years ago. 😂

High school kid last night...17 years old...weighs 160...and benched 290... I SAW him bench it.

I was thoroughly impressed.  When I was 17..I weighed about 170 and could bench 200 -- tops.

I don't know. I don't know everything...but I'd say a 2-rep or 3-rep "max" is:
1.) a better/more accurate indicator of strength
2.) safer

Yeah, just seems like 1 rep is a lot of risk without any real benefit other than bragging rights.

300+ in the last couple months.

Now... Probably won't ever attempt that again.  Felt good to see how it was in my late 40's... But now... Did it... Done.

I don't lift to add muscle anymore, just to keep tone and add endurance, so I do light weight with higher reps.  I my highest 1RM was 450.  No point in trying that again, not at 41.  I never worked out to maintain or increase that, it was just a goal I tried to reach.  Actually, 500 was the target, but I started to late in life to hit that number.  Nowadays though, I'm just doing 2 x 20 x 200.

Not to failure, but heavy singles are a good component for older lifters

Maxed out at 315 when I was maybe 22.
I’m 41 now and I only use dumbbells. I don’t go higher than 75s, otherwise my shoulders will be in a world of hurt.

Why would that be more effective than doing a set of say 6-8 at a lower weight?

Well, I guess it does depend if you wanna get stronger or not.  Ability to recover from volume diminishes when you age.

I’m serious: Wouldn’t you get stronger by doing 6-8 reps at a lighter weight? In addition to having much less injury risk. It’s not likely you can do one max rep with good form.

Same here and dumbbell press and lucky I could bench 185 lbs now. I did do 235 lbs for 5 reps 5 years ago when I was on juice.

I edited my previous.  I hit send too quick.  Volume is not recoverable as you age and you aren't ready for your next workout, overtrain, and fry your CNS. And I'm not talking 1RMs.  You do heavy singles at almost 100% of 1RM.  Last thing u want is to train to failure as an older lifter.

I prefer strict and slow at a weight you can handle.

I told you all that jerkin' off would cost you down the road.  Well, here we are.

I'm surprised you still have your sight.
