Anyone have a train set around their Christmas tree?

Recommended Posts

I have always wanted to do this.

If you have, or do, what type of train set do you use?

My parents used to. It was my dads old train set from when he was a kid in the 50s. Had this liquid you put in the smokestack on the locomotive to make it smoke. It was quite cool.

Go check a model train store. Hopefully you have a good one around you dedicated mostly to model trains. O scale may be too big for your layout but you need to just look at the size of them to judge. HO is by far the most popular size and therefore you get the most selection. But since you are only getting a circle as a basic set for around the tree, just assess the space you have, just go look at the difference. O scale is easier to put together and probably a very simple set up. HO can be the same but for both you probably need a flat surface to set up the track. So if you have hardwood floors, that could work. But if not you will have to probably put something in place for set up.

A simple circle track is basic and easy to put together. You have to consider though on how you want it to look. They have different railway beds that the track can sit on and look nice.

I have always had N scale trains, they are pretty small compared to HO and tiny compared to O, but I don't use them for the tree.

I think O scales are traditionally used for going around Christmas trees and you can find in sets ready to set up.

I had the Lionel set my dad and his brothers had in the 30s or 40s.

I think my ex wife threw it out along with almost everything that belonged to me, including my FF throphies.

We had to be very careful as I recall. It threw of lots of sparks,  which is not good on the carpet.

At one time yes.  Then there were so many presents that we stopped. So I bought a second tree and put it in the basement for the train, then we started putting some silly decorations around that thing that precluded putting the train there....so I started putting a third tree upstairs in the area that overlooks our family room and put the train up there.... I will have my focking train....

We ran a train on your mom by the Christmas tree.

That count?

I was a spectator for the special Kwanzaa train she hosted with a local basketball team.  I failed to meet the length requirement in order to ride.

I did when I was younger. Was actually talking to the wife about getting one for our tree this year but I want something other than those cheap ones Walmart sells

When the kids were little we had a huge Brio (and cheaper Brio knockoff) set of tracks and trains.  We set it up around the tree for a couple years.

Those Brio track sets were the best.
