Dynasty help

Recommended Posts

First year dynasty league, 4th pick. First time doing Dynasty. Looking at it going:

1. McCaffrey

2. Cook

3. Barkley

4. Taylor

Mahomes option at 4? Jefferson

Thoughts, any help appreciated.

What happen to Henry?

First year of a dynasty, I might be tempted to take Najee Harris at #4 overall.  Barring catastrophic injury, he should have 5-8 solid years ahead of him, with 3-5 of those among the top 10.

How many points per td? Just plain old 4 pt passing td and ppr for all?

If its 4 points passing td then no, too high for Mahomes. You can get a few guys close enough to him in Herbert or Allen.

I want a running back in that spot.

A 27 year old runningback at 4 overall in a dynasty startup would be sub-optimal.

Those are probably the right top 4.

Draft for this year or look to future?

Prioritize younger guys.  Discount receivers over 30 and runningbacks over 26, but there will be an inflection point where some guys potential won't outweigh another guys 1-2 years of production.  Those veteran guys can be had pretty cheap usually and they can win you championships.

Is it a 2 qb or super flex? If yes give more weight to the qb position.

I would go Jefferson. He will have 8 years of being a stud. It is all about longevity.

I just completed my first dynasty draft in 15 years. In 24 rounds I ended up with 4 players over 25 and only one of those was chosen in the first half of the draft. Although most of my starters are in the 22-23 year old range, I tried to go as young as possible. I will probably struggle year 1, but my goal is to get a powerhouse team for a 3-5 year span.

I took over gocolts crappy dynasty team 4 years ago and it is just now competitive, although it is still middle of the pack. I won my other dynasty league last year and have a decent shot at repeating. I have done enough rebuilds over the years to hopefully know what I am doing.

Below was our draft, it is difficult to find startup drafts to use as a reference. I chose AJ Brown, only because I already have Jefferson in the dynasty league that i won last year and I have Metcalf in my rebuilding dynasty I took over.

I wanted to diversify in case of catastrophic injury, ie achilles, etc.

It's gonna suck watching Najee Harris be a top 5 RB for the next 10 years and thinking, "I coulda been a contender..."

LOL at Tim Tebow being drafted over the likes of Ihmir Smith Marsette.

Tutu Atwell in the 16th and Josh Palmer in the 19th is criminal.

Got Taylor at 4 then Gibson on turn.  Hopkins and Lockett. Won't bore you with rest.

Thanks for help and advice.    Did get Rountree and Josh Palmer after hype on boards

Not a big fan of taking a RB2 in the first round and an RB3 in the second round, but I hope it works out for you.

Lockett is a team killer. Guy has 3-4 good games and the rest he’s a Wr4.

First year of a dynasty, I might be tempted to take Najee Harris at #4 overall.  Barring catastrophic injury, he should have 5-8 solid years ahead of him, with 3-5 of those among the top 10.

Agreed.

The line may be subpar, but I suspect that gets fixed in the next year or so.  The bigger concern with Naj is that if Ben retires,(lets assume next year or two)  that offense may be weak enough that a good production from Naj may still end in a mediocre fantasy season. (mostly due to less TD's but probably also bad game scripts)   Teams will stack the box if the replacement for Ben cant get it done, and with a poor line, it could well mean a tough year or two until the team gets the situation sorted.

That being said, Barkley provides the same or better upside and he will have a slow start to the year as hes recovering from ACL surgery, but next year should be 100% with a team that I would think would be a lot better.  Hes more proven, I'd go with him as hes on an offense that I think is ready to take a big step forward too.

Draft for this year or look to future?

I have played in dynasty leagues for several years, I am always building for the future.

That doesn't mean make some crazy move that will kill you in the short term, but it's always my biggest consideration. I'll only make big short term moves if it's putting me over the top.

For a first draft pick to start a team.

I would want a stud WR or QB, or a RB if it's a very young guy that is a sure thing.

First dynasty pick I ever made was Adrian Peterson going into his second season. That of course turned out great. I had the 3rd overall pick, was going to take Rodgers but he went 2nd. I don't see a young Adrian Peterson out there though.

Mahomes is probably the only QB I would consider taking first. I would be inclined to take a DK Metcalf, or Stefon Diggs, maybe even AJ Brown. Perhaps Justin Jefferson, Calvin Ridley or even CeeDee Lamb.

I just don't see an RB I would take. You don't want to be stuck with a guy to be the cornerstone of your team to be out in 2 seasons.

Look closer.  You don't get to be the Scout and Rivals #1 prospect coming out of high school, and then go on to become the all-time leading rusher at Alafreakingbama by accident.

I'm not saying he's gonna suck, or even remotely close to that, but I just can't anoint a guy to be the next Adrian Peterson that I haven't seen play a down in the NFL.

That said, he wouldn't be a terrible pick, I would just probably wouldn't take him at quite as high a pick.

Why not?  You anointed a guy to be the first Adrian Peterson without having seen him play a down in the NFL...

Based on the Steelers going forward I would be concern about taking Harris to start a dynasty team.

No, that was going into his 2nd season, not his rookie season

You have to draft for talent in dynasty first and foremost in dynasty because situations change so often.  Would you like Najee's situation better if Rodgers ended up there next year and they spent their 1st rounder on a hotshot o-lineman?

Rodgers negotiated his comeback in such a way that he can move next year.  He's trying to pull a Manning/Brady and join a contender looking for a QB.  That's going to be Denver, NO, Indy, Miami, Pitt, maybe Washington, maybe the 49ers.  Where ever he goes, the fantasy prospects of the team will change on a dime, and that's just one example.  Watson is going to end up going somewhere too.

Nope. They need lots of help on the oline.

I think they’ll be a team falling apart.  Like late last season.

Harris is a talent , so he’ll be a productive player, but not my first pick In a new keeper.

But I stoped playing in a keeper league while ago, and glad I did.

No one can say for sure either one of those Qb land with the Steelers, and I wouldn’t be willing to take the chance.

You're missing the point.  Situations change quickly is the point.  Chargers and Chiefs had terrible o-lines last year for instance.

That’s the point, situation do change quickly, and not always for the good .

Now just because I won’t start a keeper league taking Harris, that doesn’t mean you can’t.

Good luck.

I just realized that this means Najee Harris had more rushing yards in college than Forrest Gump.

On the Aaron Rodgers front, he's not going to be a free agent after the season (like Manning/Brady), he'll need to be traded.  That will eliminate all NFC teams and remove any possibility of the (AFC), team trading for him, of having a 1st round pick and probably more.

In your list, I think the only team that's even possible, is Denver.  I actually think that's where he'll end up too.

Chargers yes... Chiefs?  Terrible?  No.  They ranked #11 last year according to PFF.

For some reason, people have a very odd read on the Chiefs.  Yeah, Tampa embarrassed them in the Super Bowl, but their OLine was pretty solid all year - as shown, #11.  Yeah, they've made some changes, but PFF ranks them as #7 heading into 2021.  Sure, that's an upgrade... is it huge?  Jumping 4 spots?  I don't think so.  They're going to have a solid OLine this year, just like last year.

Take Harris at 4 and don't look back. The O-line has some issues but other backs in past years have done well with bad O-lines. Talent will rise to the top and Harris has the talent to be a TOP 10 if not top 5 back for a number of years. WR that high wouldn't be for me. There's no guarantee they'll return numbers for taking them that high. They may not always get 100 pus targets all the time that's dependant on the QB play. RBs get carries and the good ones get carries and catches on a better regular basis than WRs. Take Harris and enjoy.

Wrong, don’t take Harris.

The Steelers will be changing everything soon, he’s not worthy of a top five pick.

Mission accomplished, I had the 1.01 after the first season ended but last year was just a few points shy from being total points leader. I would be one of the two teams that would be favorites in this league. Plus I have 2 firsts next year already.

I don't want another dynasty league, but I would like to do another draft. The key is to be the youngest team in the league after the initial draft and go WR heavy.
