Premium Gasoline?

Recommended Posts

Well sh!t.... I'm the dummy been using Premium for years. Guess I'ma switch.

"In a consumer notice, the Federal Trade Commission, notes: “In most cases, using a higher-octane gasoline than your owner’s manual recommends offers absolutely no benefit. It won’t make your car perform better, go faster, get better mileage or run cleaner.”

I'm just one of the sheep who listened when they said Techron.... It's what plants what! 😠

I don't think Techron has anything to do with octane.  But yeah, higher octane than needed has no benefit.

Even if your car calls for premium you can use lesser fuel in modern cars without issue. The problem is you will see a slight decrease in fuel economy and power.

It's something they probably worked out a price with the oil guys... You give us $X...in our manual we'll recommend premium only... 😠

I have a Lexus, I will continue to use Premium.

I look at it as a rich people tax

Yeah if you’ve got a luxury car that calls for it, then do it. But otherwise it’s totally dumb

It has nothing to do with luxury and everything to do with compression.

2020 LX 350 F sport. (bought it new)

Was going to get the 450 hybrid, but far too small

According to the manual you should be using 87 octane. The car is low compression and does not benefit from higher octane.

I only use “premium” in my motorcycle.

But down south, we call it “high test.”

Yeah. I had to learn a whole new language when I moved here.

I always use what the manufacturer calls for.  Normally regular unleaded.

Small engines like lawn mowers and generators I always use ethanol free 89.

:dunno:

I was tasked at work once to better track and understand our fuel consumption for our Company Fleet vehicles which is hundreds of them. They thought people were "stealing gas" as in having their spouse or something line up behind them with personal cars.  Nope, I didn't find that.  Instead I found 98% of the company vehicles manufacturer called for regular unleaded but I found that 1/3rd of employees were filling up their company vehicle on their corporate card with Premium.  I did some calculations and it was a Yoooooge number of wasted $'s.

The Corporate Controller and CFO were not amused and company wide directives were issued.

When I was in Europe, I used higher octane for my cars  (95+). It definitely felt different back here.... more smooth, a little more responsive. and better mpg with higher octane.

if I recall prices were 3-4x higher over there.

Troof.

Techron itself is a great cleaning product for your fueling system.  Especially with all those POS GDI engines out there right now, putting some Techron in your tank at ever oil change is a good thing.

Same suv except it’s from 2016. Owned it for 5 year and have always gone with the regular fuel.
