Simply not true on your first point.

Second point- you are arguing things I didn't say on the second point and instead of doing the normal thing and asking for clarification first you just started insulting. But I'll be nice. Breakthrough cases happen because of the variants which propagate because people didn't get vaccinated in the first place. It is like getting water in your basement in a rain storm. You can plug holes up or use Dry Lok- but the water will continue to try and find a weak spot. Unvaccinated people are society's weak spot so the virus gets to them or there is a variant because the virus mutates. If people were vaccinated it helps shore up those weak spots. So the more people who get vaccinated now the less effect future variants can have. This is literally almost how the flu vaccine works every year.

As to why I care- because I'm not a jerk and I don't want to see people get sick. Of further note:

Well, almost.  The car turning the corner could be a vaccinated driver as well.  But I understand the analogy.

My son is 25 and an anti-vaxxer.  I have explained it to him like this:  if you are unvaccinated, you have a higher chance of getting Covid.  If you get Covid, you have a higher chance of exposing me to Covid.  Which gives me a higher chance of getting Covid, even though I'm vaccinated.  If I get Covid with my current medical problems, that could be very bad.

I think he gets it, because he is genius-level intelligent so not subject to the math misunderstandings I so often see on this subject.  But I've recently learned about Oppositional Defiant Disorder, which I'm 98.2% sure he suffers from.  This cult of anti-vaxxing is a great way to manifest it (there is also a cult of vaxxing, just to be clear).  I've been meaning to start a thread about ODD, I'll try to get to it later today.

Back on topic, my analogy presumes that he hasn't had Covid, or more specifially, he doesn't have the antibodies.  He has given me a pretty weak "yeah I'm pretty sure I had it a while back," to which I've responded that he can get an antibody test and find out.  He mumbled something about getting it, but he never has.  Somewhere inside he knows he's full of ish, but if he doesn't get a negative test he can fool himself.

To be clear- the car driving analogy was not mine. It came from that doctor from Rutgers. But yeah I think there are a lot of things here people don't get because it is a complex issue and people are more into the whole "Well B happened so it means A isn't true." It's similar to the idea people run with of "Well it snowed 3 feet yesterday- but I thought global warming was a thing." I just wish people understood the simple arguments like you laid out to your son. We could be done with this all for the most part by now if people got it. Sadly, they don't.

I'd be interested to read your thread about ODD stuff.

(And also to be clear- while there are a few dopey people here arguing against me- we can all see who they are- I don't believe someone who is anti-vaxx is automatically evil.)

I gotta agree with AD on this

If my hubs had cancer, you bet I'd be getting my kids vaccinated and giving them shite if they weren't.

My MIL is a staunch anti-vaxxer and talks to us on the daily about vaccines, dangers, how they will kill us, how she knows someone who knows someone who had a reaction. That said, she's the one who would have serious issues if she got Covid. She already has lung problems (not sure what the diagnosis is, but she uses a nebulizer, takes various prescriptions, gets sick VERY easily). She and my FIL are overweight, have other comorbidities.

I have yet to explain to her that the fact she WON"T get vaccinated means that the rest of us have to...so we protect HER. It's just such an odd way of thinking, IMO,

Jerry, your son is kind of selfish knowing that your immune system is compromised and he could put you seriously at risk. I can see how some argue against vaccines for the general public or people they don't know who are compromised, but you're his focking dad.

Cool beans. Just got a hair cut appointment tomorrow, my first cut since February, and probably the last one I'll have employed. My hair is beyond Bill Murry in King Pin ridiculous long right now. I wish I could go bald. Fock my hairy genes. Still, I'm going to savor the simple pleasures in life that will no longer be available to patriots, like hair cuts.

Yeah, I'm doing my doomsday prepping for my eventual permanent unemployment since America is now communist. Salud. Which loosely translated means "I just spilled my drink on my self".

Well he can get tested for the antibodies. It's $30.  Also, he can read a textbook on how vaccines work in the body to create immunity.

As per Vogue, if one is lucky enough to be on the guest list, they don’t pay to attend. If one, however, is not on the list, but has managed to secure a chance of attending, they buy the tickets. As per a Fox Business report, while stars are given invites by Anna Wintour, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, it’s very common for a brand to host them and buy tables at the event.

So, was AOC on Wintour’s list, or did she pay $35,000? The politician took to Instagram to clear the air. She wrote, “And yes, BEFORE anybody starts wilding out - NYC elected officials are regularly invited to and attend the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing our city’s cultural institutions that serve the public. I was one of several in attendance.”

Apparently, not getting the whole story is for thee.

President Biden’s executive order mandating COVID-19 vaccines among all federal workers does not apply to members of Congress, the federal court system or their staffers.

Biden’s order Thursday mandating COVID-19 vaccinations among federal workers and contractors drops the option of regular testing and allows only some religious and disability exemptions. The order applies only to employees of the executive branch and does not apply to the legislative or judicial branches of government, the White House confirmed to Fox News.

Just to be clear. You are being the selfish one. You are pushing your requirements on him. You are pushing your fear. The 100% fact is the vaccine doesn't not prevent people from getting the virus or spreading. This is a fact. You forcing the vax on your kid while trying to shame him absolutely makes you the selfish one here.

There certainly is selfishness on both sides.  If somebody had a gun pointed at my head, it would be selfish of me to knock the gun away and deprive him of the pleasure of blowing my brains out.  Life is full of dueling selfishness, and we (usually) function by picking off the low-hanging obvious fruit.  And then there is this discussion...

As for your 100% facts, I presume you mean "does not prevent 100% of..." or else your post is even dumber.  With that benefit of the doubt, let me give you some more facts.  It is 100% fact that condoms do not prevent VD, or unwanted births.  It is 100% fact that smoking does not cause cancer.  It is 100% fact that motorcycle helmets do not prevent head injuries.

As fun as it would be to spend all day listing similar, I am going to do the unselfish thing and not bore the board with it.

The Postal Service was exempt too, at first. Then word got out and the administration had to cover their ass.

Can you imagine? The Postal Service, the people who go door to door across America and deliver mail weren't initially included in the mandate.

Focking joke is right.

I don't know the relationship, but I can certainly assume the kid is scared to death his dad's going to die.  Skids wants his son close. Sort of selfish, I guess, in a fatherly way. I couldn't do it. Force my kid to get vaxxed if he didn't want to. The odds are are pretty good that nothing will happen, and those are the odds I would have to lean on.

I haven't forced anything on him.  I had the discussion I described above months ago and haven't mentioned it since.  We've seen each other since, both one on one and for family gatherings.  Not a whole lot though because that's how he rolls in general.  :dunno:

I didn't mean to imply you were forcing him,  but from his standpoint,  his extremely ill father is basically telling him he might kill him if he doesn't vax. That is some incredible pressure, Don't you think? He knows what's at stake here.

So if the goal of the mandate was really just to get more people to take the vaccine, then Biden should have applied it to those receiving government assistance as well.

And I know that’s been a talking point of some conservatives as well.  But has any politician actually proposed this?   I guess to do so a Republican would have to stop fighting the mandate in general though.

I am required to notify them at the end of September if I've taken the poison. They will give us more information at that time.

I work for the government, specifically a state employee. We have a Democrat governor who is Cuomo Jr. Our Philadelphia mayor is still requiring masks. I drive two mile to the grocery store outside the city limits, not a mask in sight. Our city has a tax on diet soda and seltzer, because health reasons.

Government officials do not care about anything but power and money and in Biden's case, kid touching. If things fall apart, like getting rid of a bunch of employees, well, they don't give a sh!t. It's the government after all.

I'm not sure which one of us you mean about odds of nothing happening, but the odds of something seriously bad happening him are orders of magnitude less than it happening to me, like approaching infinity less.  You either don't understand or choose not to understand the math that makes this so, that's cool, I'm not going to argue it with you, others have tried and failed.  So carry on with that.

Regarding the pressure, did you become a libby helicopter parent suddenly?  Incredible pressure?  He's 25, has a good job, owns his own house.  At 18 I carried my father in a casket and became the man of the family.  More importantly, my family didn't talk about his cancer.  Like, ever.  I hated that in hindsight and have decided to be honest (yet positive where possible) with my children, who are all adults.  I'm young, healthy, doing the right things, and had good recent scans, but the reality is that there is a decent chance I won't be alive in 5 years.  I'm making life choices based on that.  As are they:  both of my daughters intend to stay in Phoenix after college in part to be close by and see me often.  How would they feel if they moved and I passed away soon thereafter?  How would he feel if he gave me Covid and something bad happened?  I don't know, but I think they should have the info necessary to make such decisions.
