How are drunk drivers normally sentenced when killing someone like this? Should it be like 2nd degree murder?

Looks like in Nevada, it's only severe if he had 3 DUI convictions.  If he wasn't drinking at the time, the charges may not be that extreme.

https://www.shouselaw.com/nv/dui/laws/vehicular-homicide/

2. How is it different from vehicular manslaughter?

Vehicular manslaughter (NRS 484B.657) is an entirely separate crime from vehicular homicide in Nevada. Vehicular manslaughter is when a driver’s simple negligence causes a fatal car accident.

Example: Tori forgets to signal before turning right, causing a bicyclist to collide into her and die. Prosecutors slap her with a vehicular manslaughter charge for her negligent action of failing to signal.

Had Tori been drinking at the time of the accident, she would instead face DUI with death charges.

Vehicular manslaughter is only a misdemeanor. Penalties include:

  • Up to six months in jail; and/or
  • Up to $1,000 in fines2

Wow. I'm guessing it doesn't apply to Ruggs now but that statement seems a bit lenient if this is what applies only after having 3 prior DUIs. Sounds like the justice department at that point should hold some accountability if it ever gets to a 4th and a killing.

NRS 484C.130 is the Nevada statute that defines the crime of vehicular homicide. A person commits vehicular homicide by causing a fatal DUI crash after having at least three prior DUI convictions.

The NFL should replace the “stop racism” logo on the fields and back of helmets with “stop dui”.  Drunk NFL players have killed more people than racism has since they started doing it.  It works!

Fortunately for Ruggs, no one heard him call anyone queer or n****r.  He may never be allowed to play again.

Bruce Kimball

Bruce Kimball, a 1984 Olympic silver medalist in diving, Monday was sentenced to 17 years in prison and 15 years' probation for a drunk-driving accident that killed two teen-agers and injured four last August in Brandon, Fla., a suburb of Tampa. Jan 31, 1989

Leonard Little.  Stallworth.  We have seen this before.  Although Stallworths instance the person was crossing the street illegally.  Still obviously doesnt make drunk driving any more okay.

If he plays in the NFL again then we clearly see their priorities.   Gruden didn't get fired but he would have been.  He was shamed out for private emails 10 years ago.  For words.

People and media will give Ruggs a much easier time than they did Gruden.

True. But they will get the same amount of money that the floyd family got from the blm movement who made millions in his name. Enough for their founder to retire comfortably I may add.

it's obviously the alcohol companies, car companies and bartender's fault. They should be charged for manslaughter...not Ruggs.

It doesn't make drunk driving ok but people getting killed or maimed in those circumstances get no sympathy from me. The driver gets it all.

Drunken driving is a choice. I don't get how if you kill someone while drunken driving it's not straight up manslaughter.

Self induced down syndrome that you have been told a thousand times (with plenty of real world examples) that it will most likely cause you to do stupid things and possibly really hurt someone or yourself.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32543330/henry-ruggs-iii-drove-156-mph-seconds-fatal-car-crash-prosecutors-say

Former Raiders receiver Henry Ruggs III was driving 156 mph just seconds before the fiery crash in Las Vegas that left a woman dead, according to prosecutors.

Ruggs appeared in Las Vegas Justice Court on Wednesday morning, one day after being arrested on suspicion of DUI after his involvement in the high-speed crash early Tuesday morning.

Prosecutors said Ruggs was traveling 156 mph two seconds before the crash, and was at 127 mph when the airbags deployed in his Chevrolet Corvette. Judge Joe Bonaventure responded that he couldn't recall speeds that high in his career on the bench.

Prosecutors also said Ruggs' blood-alcohol content was 0.161 -- twice the legal limit -- and that a loaded firearm was recovered from his vehicle. Bonaventure set his bail at $150,000 and ordered Ruggs not to drive and to surrender his passport. Bonaventure also ordered Ruggs to abstain from alcohol and other controlled substances.

Ruggs, who was released by the Raiders late Tuesday night, faces felony charges of driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in death and reckless driving.
