Nope he has to be in check for it to be checkmate.  If it's your move right now, you better give him somewhere to go.

It got called a Stalemate. 

Haven't played in forever. Played against the computer for a refresher and thought I had him.

Ima be easy pickins for the geeks.

Naw G, you demolished your opponent, you just weren't aware of this one obscure rule.  

Although the computer will now be forever bragging about how it pulled out a draw in that game.

That was the third to last move. He then moved his king in front of my bishop. I then moved one of my pawns mistakenly thinking he would only be able to move into check and therefore not be able to move thereby making it checkmate.

Mookz pointed out the flaw in that strategy.

I have not played in years and thought I was ok.  I played two games.  I was actually close winning the first one but time ran out on me so I lost.  the second game the guy tore through me.  He had every move blocked from the beginning and I never had a chance. I felt like Rittenhouse without a gun.  You guys will make short work of me.
