Taiwan - doomsday

Recommended Posts

China is in a difficult position of trying to retain access to global markets and keeping Russia as an ally.  If they decide to back Russia, the world may turn on China in a big way.  That could mean China decides there is nothing holding them back from taking Taiwan, especially if Russia can take Ukraine and all that happens are sanctions.  Hopefully, this thread doesn't become a big issue.

China’s leaders may be watching Ukraine with an eye on Taiwan

Analysis by Simone McCarthy, CNN

Updated 1:37 PM EST, Wed February 23, 2022

Hong Kong CNN —

As the world’s attention focuses on the escalating crisis between Russia and Ukraine, a spotlight has also been turned on an island halfway around the world – self-governing Taiwan.

On the surface, there may be parallels: both Taiwan and Ukraine are Western-friendly democracies whose status quo could be upended by powerful autocracies.

In Taiwan’s case, China’s Communist Party seeks eventual “reunification” with the island it claims as its territory despite having never governed it – and has not ruled out doing so by force. For Ukraine, that threat is unfolding: Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he considers Russians and Ukrainians as “one people,” and it’s yet unclear how far he’ll go to realize that claim – on Monday he declared two breakaway, Moscow-backed territories in Ukraine as independent republics.

In the West, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday said “echoes” of what happens in Ukraine “will be heard in Taiwan,” while US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on a trip to Australia earlier this month obliquely said “others are watching” the Western response to Russia, “even if it’s half a world away in Europe.”

Concerns have been rising in recent years that a confident China under leader Xi Jinping may make a bold move to take control of Taiwan, and Beijing will likely be carefully monitoring the situation in Ukraine for signs of how Western powers respond – and just how severe those responses are.

Thanks for creating this thread. Worth a separate discussion. Not being sarcastic. I'm right here with in watching this.

This could very well be the start of ww3.  The scary thing is, if it DOES cascade into ww3, the war will be fought in a matter of hours, nukes everywhere, and we will probably never know what exactly happened, who fired first, or what is left.  just an inferno of death.  something like fallout minus the monsters and crazy bunkers.

China really overreacted to quarantining blacks over covid.  it adds to suspicion that theyve got some sort of virus that targets and kills blacks.  if they attack taiwan, id think they certainly release such a virus if theyve got it as part of pushing all-in.

You can't make a virus that targets black people because black people have the same DNA as yellow, brown, white, and red people.

Beijing wants Taiwan as much as Russia wants Ukraine, maybe more so, but Taiwan has a water barrier and modern military that can fight back. Piggybacking an invasion of Taiwan with a Russian invasion of Ukraine would make sense to the Chinese if they felt they were ready for such a move. If China feels both ready and willing to undertake such aggressive and unprovoked action, before the dust settles in Ukraine would be the best time.

According to Peefoam they have a violence gene, so you could just target that.

Thanks for that post, there is more genetic difference between two africans on the opposite side of the continent than there is between an african and a european.

Also, there is a big difference to how the first world countries view Taiwan as opposed to Ukraine. We need Taiwan.

In dominating the fabrication of the most advanced semiconductors, the giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd (TSMC) has captured a technology that’s crucial to the cutting-edge digital devices and weapons of today and tomorrow. TSMC accounts for more than 90% of global output of these chips, according to industry estimates.

America has said it would come to Taiwan's defense, so there's that deterrent.

Agreed. Ukraine is a stagnant dysfunctional country with a corrupt government. They are democratic though, so at least they had that. Meanwhile, Afghanistan is a clogged focking toilet. Taiwan, on the other hand, is a modern thriving democracy and important global player. They deserve better and you can't turn your back on them.

More specifically, as the article states, TSMC controls the market for the most advanced computer chips.  Intel might disagree, but Intel just makes Intel chips (mostly).  TSMC makes everyone elses.

I just looked it up and TSMC has fabs in other places but I think all of their most advanced geometries are in Taiwan.  They are building a next-gen fab in Phoenix, it will be huge for our economy, I'm not sure the people here appreciate how huge.  The supply chain infrastructure is already growing.

Ukraine may end up with human rights violations blah blah blah who cares.  The US and the rest of the world will not let China get control of those TSMC fabs, we'll go to war over that.

China is now emboldened enough by the events in Ukraine to warn it will nuclear weapons if anyone helps Taiwan defend itself.

https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/china-nuclear-threats-russia-threats-us-wake-up-call-gordon-chang

China's nuclear threats are following on the heels of Russia's threats and should be a US wake-up call

Published March 16, 2022 2:00am EDT

By Gordon G. Chang | Fox News

It cannot be a good sign that Russia and China are making nuke threats at the same time

China’s Ministry of Defense on Thursday threatened to impose the "worst consequences" on countries helping Taiwan defend itself.

"The Taiwan question is purely an internal affair of China, which brooks no outside interference," a ministry spokesperson told reporters. "No one and no force can stop the historical trend that China will solve the Taiwan question and realize a complete national reunification. To anyone who makes troubles on the Taiwan question: The higher you jump the harder you fall."

Revealingly, China Military Online, an official English-language site of China’s People’s Liberation Army, translated the last sentence of the spokesperson’s words this way: "Anyone who makes troubles on the Taiwan question will suffer the worst consequences in the end."

Usually, Beijing’s official English translations soften Chinese texts. This is one of the rare cases where the opposite is true, indicating the Chinese military is itching to use its nuclear weapons.

The belligerent warning was issued a day after contentious talks between Chinese ruler Xi Jinping and Australian officials. The Chinese side was particularly incensed by comments from Australian Defense Minister Peter Dutton, who pledged full support for Taiwan. "Whatever we can," Dutton said, referring to Australian aid to the island republic.

The Ukraine right and the Ukraine left have a deeper divide than democrats and republicans do in this country. They are/were having a not so cold civil war. Their elections are basically split right down the middle, with the western half wanting to be aligned with the EU and the west, and the Eastern half wanting to be aligned with Russia. Ukraine is not a stable country. It just has our guy running it.

Correct.  And its heart-breaking to sit here and watch the US media completely lie about all of that (thru the usual lie of omissions), especially when it so easy to do your own research and see what is really going on.  It makes me not trust what the US media is telling me.

I will probably be accused of being a "Xi sock puppet", but isn't it relevant that until 1950, i.e. just 70 yrs ago, Taiwan was part of China for hundreds of years prior to that?    And that it was the corrupt Chinese Nationalists and Chiang Kai-shek who seized the island and established a new country there.    If it weren't for the cold war, we probably wouldn't have even given a sh!t about Taiwan and would have let the communist Chinese load up a bunch of boats and invade/take over the island.     And if it weren't for Truman sailing the navy's 7th fleet thru the Straits of Taiwan as the communists were getting ready to invade - there wouldn't be a Taiwan.

You could make the case that Taiwan is a cold-war relic and that the Chinese have a logical case to be made for reunification.   The counter case would be the destruction and death that would cause.   But what if Taiwan followed the Hong Kong model of reunification?    Would we go to war over that?

No we wouldn't go to war if Taiwan wanted to be part of China.

The reason we support Taiwan is because they want to be free.  We generally support people that want freedom.

Infographics show went thru a WW3 scenario where China invades Taiwan and Russia invades the Balkans.  Following it thru to its conclusion, they realize Russia and China make some early gains but stall out and 2 weeks in, NATO is pushing them back on all fronts and its a clear NATO victory.  And the natural response from China and Russia is to nuke everyone and the planet dies.  Pretty much what I'm thinking.  Although in my scenario, Russia has already played out war game scenarios in their heads and realize a conventional war is an autoloss, so the optimal plan is to fire nukes immediately and skip all the tanks and planes stuff.
