China escalates warnings to US on Nancy Pelosi’s possible Taiwan trip

By Snejana Farberov

July 25, 2022 8:22am

China has ratcheted up warnings to the US about a planned trip to Taiwan in August by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, even suggesting a possible military response, according to new reports.

The behind-the-scenes rhetoric was significantly stronger than the threats Beijing has made previously regarding US interaction with Taiwan, the Financial Times first reported Sunday, citing six people familiar with the private message to the Biden administration.

The warning signaled a possible military response, the Financial Times said.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman on Monday confirmed the report.

“We are seriously prepared,” spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters at a regular briefing, when asked for comment about the contents of the report.

When asked what kind of response China was “seriously prepared for” and if it would be a military or a diplomatic response, Zhao said: “If the US side is bent on going its own way, China will take strong measures to resolutely respond and counteract.”

“The United States should be held responsible for any serious consequences,” he added.

China has not said what specific actions it would take, although speculation has centered on a new round of threatening military exercises or even an attempt to prevent Pelosi’s plane from landing by declaring a no-fly zone over Taiwan.

The White House National Security Council and the State Department declined to comment on the report.

China has been stepping up military activity around Taiwan, seeking to pressure the democratically elected government there to accept Chinese sovereignty.

WHY would she even GO there knowing that tensions are high? This is just telling China we don't give a fock.

This is a non-event. The Speaker of the House may be a crook, but she's our crook and she can-and-should meet with whoever she wants. China looks like they are back to itching for war over Taiwan again and are fishing now for a fake excuse/provocation.

I'd thought that Russia's invasion of Ukraine would deter them since it was expected to be an easy win, but turned into a total comic failure aft first combined with crushing sanctions and China wouldn't want any part of that. Fast forward a few months, the west is self-inflicting itself with energy related economic crises while the ruble is as strong as ever. It is possibly the west that is suffering more for this invasion than Russia, that data is accurate, while Russia's economy is ... well it's hard to say what measures have been taken to prop it up, but by my 4th rate non-fact based opinion, whatever they're doing seems to be working.

So maybe China sees the West as week and is back to itching to take advantage of Biden's* incompetence again and blaming Nancy Pelosi for the war they want to start is in the cards.

She's trying to stop the GOP from taking the House.  The race is close and has gotten closer after the abortion ruling.  A lot of republican voters support the idea of Pelosi visiting Taiwan.  Her visit could flip enough moderate republican voters (particularly women) on the margins to make a difference.

https://freebeacon.com/national-security/china-warns-pelosi-trip-marks-invasion-and-military-has-right-to-fire-on-her-plane/

A Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece said on Friday that it could shoot down Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's plane if she makes a stop in Taiwan, a move he said is tantamount to an "invasion" of the island.

"If U.S. fighter jets escort Pelosi’s plane into Taiwan, it is invasion," Hu Xijin, an analyst for the Chinese state-controlled Global Times propaganda outlet, said on Twitter. "The PLA has the right to forcibly dispel Pelosi’s plane and the U.S. fighter jets, including firing warning shots and making tactical movement of obstruction. If ineffective, then shoot them down."

Pelosi is scheduled to depart Friday for a tour of Asia and it has been rumored that she will visit Taiwan. Tensions have been high ahead of Pelosi’s trip, with the Chinese government warning her against making any stop in Taiwan, the contested island that China has repeatedly threatened to invade.

Pelosi will visit Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore. CNN reported on Friday that the Taiwan visit currently "remains uncertain."

Xijin also has said in recent days that the Chinese military should "accompany" Pelosi’s plane during her tour.

"The Chinese mainland must be brave enough to take this step of flying warplanes over the island, which, unlike warplanes flight around Taiwan, can truly reflect China's sovereignty over the territory, and is more substantial than any visit to Taiwan by senior foreign officials," Xijin said in comments highlighted by the Middle East Media Research Institute, which is tracking the situation. "Using Pelosi's visit to Taiwan to complete this leap is most likely to make it a peaceful transition."

President Joe Biden recently said that a trip to Taiwan by Pelosi is "not a good idea right now."

well in theory an independent currently planning on voting republican that is also a single issue voter on a strong military might flip.  but MORE IMORTANTLY the democratic party probably has done some internal polling showing Pelosi visiting Taiwan now helps them in the House election by a significant margin.

whenever you see a politician do something odd like this near an election, assume internal polling told them it played well where it mattered.

What if the Chinese started working with Puerto Rico, and that island was asking them to help protect them from the US?

I think China has a legit claim to Taiwan, and there should be an eventual unification. :dunno:

China vows ‘targeted military actions’ in response to Pelosi Taiwan visit

AFP

August 2, 2022 11:44 am

United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday evening, defying a string of increasingly stark warnings and threats from China that have sent tensions between the world’s two superpowers soaring.

Pelosi, second in line to the presidency, is the highest-profile elected US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years and Beijing has made clear that it regards her presence as a major provocation, setting the region on edge.

Live broadcasts showed the 82-year-old lawmaker, who flew on a US military aircraft, being greeted at Taipei’s Songshan Airport by foreign minister Joseph Wu.

“Our delegation’s visit to Taiwan honors America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s vibrant Democracy,” Pelosi’s official Twitter account tweeted moments after she arrived.

She added her visit “in no way contradicts” US policy towards Taiwan and Beijing.

Pelosi is currently on a tour of Asia and while neither she nor her office confirmed the Taipei visit, multiple US and Taiwanese media outlets reported it was on the cards — triggering days of building anger from Beijing.

The People’s Liberation Army said it was on “high alert” and would “launch a series of targeted military actions in response” to the visit.

“Those who play with fire will perish by it,” Beijing’s foreign ministry added.

Taiwan presidential office website hit by cyberattack ahead of Pelosi visit

By Maggie Miller - 4h ago

The website of Taiwan’s presidential office went dark Tuesday due to an alleged distributed denial-of-service attack, with other government websites also impacted.

Tense moment: The attack took place hours ahead of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. The Chinese government threatened to take action to respond to the trip, and Taiwan is reportedly readying air raid shelters in anticipation of a potential Chinese attack.

Taiwan Presidential Office spokesperson Chang Tun-Han confirmed the DDoS attack on the office in a post on Facebook, noting that the DDoS attack consisted of 200 times more traffic to the website than normal, and it was carried out by a group from outside Taiwan.

Bigger attack: NBC News reported that other Taiwanese government sites were also down ahead of Pelosi’s visit, including the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the website of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, where Pelosi’s plane landed.

All three websites were up and running as of publication. Doug Madory, director of Internet Analysis at traffic monitoring group Kentik, said Tuesday that his company had tracked the attacks on the three websites, describing the DDoS incidents as "effective even if they were not record-breaking." He noted that overall internet traffic for Taiwan looked "pretty normal."

China vows to ‘fight to the death’ & masses tanks on beaches ahead of ‘D-Day style invasion’ on Taiwan fuelling WW3 fear

CHINA has vowed to "fight to the death" as warships, tanks and fighter planes have been deployed amid fears war could explode over Taiwan.

Beijing is furious and has threatened to take action as it accuses the US of provoking them over the breakaway island, which the Communist Party has long claimed belongs to China.

UPDATED: Carrier USS Ronald Reagan, F-35B Big Deck Operating Near Taiwan as Pelosi Arrives in Singapore; China Renews Threats

By: Sam LaGrone

August 1, 2022 12:32 PM • Updated: August 1, 2022 5:14 PM

Two U.S. capital ships and their escorts are operating in the Western Pacific near Taiwan, USNI News has learned.

Aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) and big deck amphibious ship USS Tripoli (LHA-7), with Marine F-35B Lighting II Joint Strike Fighters embarked, are operating in the vicinity of Taiwan, on the edge of the South China Sea ahead of a Western Pacific visit from U.S. House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to the region, according to the Aug. 1 edition of the USNI News Fleet and Marine Tracker. An earlier version of this post indicated USS America (LHA-6) was underway but it is in port in Sasebo, Japan, U.S. Pacific Fleet told USNI News on Monday afternoon.

A Pentagon spokesman told USNI News on Monday that the ships were operating normally in the region and would not detail force protection measures for the visit of the third highest-ranking U.S. official to the region.

However, a senior defense official told USNI News the ships, escorts and their air wings – already in the region – were prepared to linger as a contingency option. On Monday, Beijing implied there would be a military response if Pelosi traveled to Taiwan.

China has “serious concern over Speaker Pelosi’s potential visit to Taiwan and our firm opposition to the visit. We have been stressing that such a visit would lead to serious consequences,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters Monday when asked about the trip.

“We want to once again make it clear to the US side that the Chinese side is fully prepared for any eventuality and that the People’s Liberation Army of China will never sit idly by, and we will make resolute response and take strong countermeasures to uphold China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

From what I understand Taiwan was basically where the previous regime went after being ousted by communists. Something like 75% of its citizens today don't want to be unified with China, so what's the legitimate claim? I'm not being sparky, I'm admittedly not fully educated on the subject and welcome additional information.

It's about optics. Her visiting grants legitimacy to the idea of Taiwans independence. China is very touchy about this.

China is not like us.  Many Americans have a craving for instant gratification and pursue what is right in front of them.  The Chinese culture is more holistic.  You can see it in their art as well.  They have the long term plan, and are willing to give up a little today to achieve that longer play.

Being vociferous about Taiwan is that longer play. It WILL eventually be subsumed by China, they know it, and I think most others around the world know it.  Right now it does not serve their interests to make that play just yet. So they are patient.

They also understand that world leaders visiting Taiwan gives the state there a certain legitimacy. And that is not helpful to that longer term plan.  They insist it is more or less a province that they allow some autonomy.  Pelosi visiting negates that position to a degree. It pisses them off.

Pelosi Stares Down Xi’s Threats, Giving China a Reality Check

Beijing left asking for patience after response disappoints
Xi has little appetite for conflict before leadership meeting

By

Rebecca Choong Wilkins

August 3, 2022, 5:00 AM PDT

In roughly 24 hours, Chinese officials and propagandists went from warning of a powder keg to pleading for patience as Beijing struggled to articulate a cohesive response to Nancy Pelosi’s landmark trip to Taiwan.

Ahead of Pelosi’s visit, the first by a US House speaker in 25 years, President Xi Jinping warned the Biden administration would get “burned” while nationalist Chinese commentators suggested she would “ignite the powder keg.”

Yet after Pelosi landed safely, stayed the night in Taipei and hailed US-Taiwan ties in a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen, China’s tone shifted from belligerent to defensive. At a briefing on Wednesday afternoon, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying asked the public to give the government more time to follow through on threats to punish the US and Taiwan.

“We will do what we have said,” she said. “So please have some patience about that.”

Unprecedented live-fire drills encircling the island will block flights and shipping as analysts predict further punitive measures

The US House Speaker’s visit was seen by Beijing as a ‘malicious’ provocation but she said it was necessary to show solidarity with the island

China is set to launch an unprecedented military drill that effectively blockades Taiwan until Sunday afternoon following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island.

During her brief stay Pelosi met President Tsai Ing-wen and other senior politicians as well as human rights activists, before flying on to South Korea on Wednesday afternoon.

Her visit to the island, which Beijing regards as a breakaway province, has plunged the China-US relationship to new depths and triggered the worst crisis over the Taiwan Strait for decades.

Beijing saw the trip as an explicit provocation and a move to embolden the island’s independence-leaning government.
