A furious Vladimir Putin will probably turn to nuclear weapons after Kyiv humiliated the despot by downing his supposedly 'unstoppable' hypersonic missiles, a retired US Army Brigadier General said today.

This week Ukraine announced that it had shot down six of Russia's hypersonic 'Kinzhal' missiles - days after the US military confirmed Kyiv had downed another of Putin's hypersonic missiles using America's Patriot defence system.

Kevin Ryan, who served as chief of staff for the US Army's Space and Missile Defense Command, said now that Putin's 'unstoppable' missiles are being destroyed, it means that a decisive victory for the Russian leader is getting further and further out of his reach.

Ryan warned that if Putin cannot force a victory with conventional weapons, the frustrated despot will 'probably turn to nuclear weapons'. 

'Putin is running out of ways to escalate the war in a way that would force Ukraine - and the West - to back down,' Ryan, a senior fellow at Harvard University's Belfer Center in the US, told MailOnline.

MOSCOW, May 23 (Reuters) - A member of Russian President Vladimir Putin's powerful Security Council on Tuesday warned that the more destructive the weapons that the West supplied to Ukraine, the higher the risk of "nuclear apocalypse".

Russia, which has more nuclear weapons than any other state, has repeatedly said the West is engaged in a proxy war with Russia over Ukraine that could escalate into a much bigger conflict.

The United States has committed $37 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since Putin sent troops into Ukraine in February last year.

U.S. President Joe Biden told fellow G7 leaders on Friday that he backed a joint effort with allies to train Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets, according to a senior U.S. Administration official, though there is no commitment as yet to supply the jets themselves.

"The more weapons are supplied, the more dangerous the world will be," former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chairman of the Security Council, told the Russian state news agencies TASS and RIA while on a trip to Vietnam and Laos.

"And the more destructive these weapons are, the more likely the scenario becomes of what is commonly called a nuclear apocalypse," Medvedev was quoted as saying.

The West says it wants to help Ukraine defeat Russia but has repeatedly insisted it does not want to trigger a direct confrontation between the U.S.-backed NATO military alliance and Russia.

But Medvedev said NATO did not appear to be taking the possibility of nuclear conflict seriously.

"They are wrong. And at some point, events can move in a completely unpredictable scenario. And the responsibility will lie entirely with the North Atlantic Alliance," RIA quoted him as saying.

Amid growing concerns of security risks to members of Congress, more than 50 senators have been issued satellite phones for emergency communication, people familiar with the measures told CBS News. The devices are part of a series of new security measures being offered to senators by the Senate Sergeant at Arms, who took over shortly after the assault on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The satellite phone technology has been offered to all 100 senators. CBS News has learned at least 50 have accepted the phones, which Senate administrative staff recommend senators keep in close proximity during their travels. 

In testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee last month, Senate Sergeant at Arms Karen Gibson said satellite communication is being deployed "to ensure a redundant and secure means of communication during a disruptive event."  

Gibson said the phones are a security backstop in the case of an emergency that "takes out communications" in part of America. Federal funding will pay for the satellite airtime needed to utilize the phone devices.

A Department of Homeland Security advisory said satellite phones are a tool for responding to and coordinating government services in the case of a "man-made" or natural disaster that wipes out communication.  

Gibson has also opened an office "demonstration space" in the basement of the Russell Senate Office Building to offer senators and staff an exhibition of new home state office security upgrades. The demonstration room offers exhibitions of "duress buttons," mail screening devices and safety glass to reduce the risk of attacks.

A California man was charged in a 2022 attack at the San Francisco home of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The assailant was allegedly targeting Nancy Pelosi when he confronted and attacked Pelosi's husband Paul with a hammer.

In a May 15 attack at the Fairfax, Virginia, office of Rep. Gerry Connolly, one of Connolly's constituents is accused of attacking two of the congressman's staffers with a metal baseball bat. Both were briefly hospitalized and are recovering.

your point?  unless you think someone with a baseball bat is going to wipe out communication in the Capitol to the extent they will need satellite phones, i think the intent is clear:  its about a nuclear attack.

i think biden is going to have to come out pretty soon and tell the American people the truth about nuclear war again.  there was a critical point a few months ago where i thought he needed to do it, and he did shortly after i mentioned it.  hes at least a stand up person with regards to our lives in that regard unlike the liberal nuts in this forum like rusty, gutter etc.  i think if the ukrainian counteroffensive begins he might take the time to warn americans once again.
