I think a lot of us took movies we watched and like and Ghandi wasn't one of them. I seen it back in the 80's and just didn't do it for me and same for Ordinary People I just watched the first time a few years ago. On Golden Pond I wanted and like that movie but thought it would have been around to a later round. The big name movies I took I watch them all and like them.

Because they all sucked.Just saying. I don’t like sleeping in movies.

Well, I guess that it's fair in that you like what you like. Critics rave about Brokeback Mountain and I'll take their word for it, but I'll never see it.

I was dating this hippie hock that dragged me to see some of the the movies you mentioned. Couldn’t stand them. Visually appealing and the costumes were great. But the story lines were beyond boring. Especially foreign films recognized by the academy. Howard’s Inn and a few others like it. The only reason I went was because the Theater was a place called Movie Pitchers that had pitchers of beer. I’d get laid afterwards and pretend an boring English movie was great! Don’t get me wrong. I love great story telling. My picks should show that. But the academy picks Precious??? Horrible movie. As are many others they have chosen for years. They aren’t the bench mark IMO.

I've posted the results. In the music draft, bostonlager made a rule that we couldn't vote for ourselves, only the other rosters. It was a good policy, else we'll all vote for each other. I want us to follow that too.

So, let me explain this a bit...

We have in this decade ten Academy awards for best picture. it's basically always a drama. I took five of those, bostonlager took one, we left four on the table: Ghandi, Out of Africa, Driving Miss Daisy, and Ordinary People.

Especially focking Ghandi! I remember when this came out. It was a huge sensation, it was epic. Then Ghandi  went on to win seven Academy Awards ... and you guys leftundrafted :wall:

I contemplated both Driving Miss Daisy and Ordinary People. I just didn't pull the trigger on them.

I never saw Ghandi.

Rereading this sounds so stupid and I come off like an a$$hole. I owe you guys an apology. You guys put together the catalogs you wanted, as you should have, and you had no reason to factor in the Academy’s opinion.

I did wish all the Best Picture winners would get drafted, was disappointed they didn’t, but I should have just kept my mouth shut.

Sorry guys.

I kept waiting and waiting to fill that slot because both Porky’s and Revenge were out. If one fell, I would take the other next pick, which is what happened. Had I gotten hosed on both Porky’s and Revenge of the Nerds, this was where I was going.

I don’t care about awards shows so that probably has a bit to do with it.

Those are three pretty big misses...If I weren't such a lazy focker, Pee Wee's Big Adventure would easily been drafted.  That is the movie that taught me the Alamo doesn't have a basement!

Only 2 mentioned undrafted from my list was 9 1/2 weeks and I thought about ordinary people but changed my mind.

Also of note I never would of drafted it but Do the Right Thing was high on all lists I saw online and figured it was already drafted - again I was not interested in it

Night Shift - the movie that asked us to believe that people would pay Shelly Long enough money for sex that she could afford a Manhattan apt.  Bill Blazejowski is one of my role models though, it's why I'm and idea man.

I believe The Hitcher was released in theaters.  Jennifer Jason Leigh one of my first crushes I was blown away when they killed her in the movie---how often does the heroine go out like that!  :shocking:

Release[edit]

In theaters[edit]

Contractually, TriStar Pictures was obligated to distribute any film by HBO/Silver Screen. TriStar representatives saw an early screening and studio president David Matalon said, "It's the best film that we have for 1986".[3] The Hitcher opened in 800 theaters[3] on February 21, 1986, and made $2.1 million during its opening weekend, going on to gross $5.8 million in North America.[10]

Hmm. Cool. Thought it was HBO. Great thriller. Pissed I didn’t take it. I used to pick up hitch hikers driving back and forth from college. Stopped when I picked up one that was clearly insane. He was standing by a car on I-10 and asked if he could get a lift to Baton Rouge and get his brother to drive him back. Get about three miles outside of BR and he blurts out, You stoopid mother fawker!!! I was walking and saw that car. I ripped off the plates stoopid. You didn’t notice that or there weren’t any emergency blinkers??? Are you looking to get hurt???

Never picked anyone up again. Helped, but no ride unless you have kids.

Draft Recap:

I was born after more than half of these movies and most likely never saw any of them until the early 90's. I probably had to do more "research" than others to make sure I knew what all was from the 80's rather than the early 90's and there were definitely a few I was thinking of that just missed that cut.... That said, some of my favorite movies come from the 80s and I have plenty of memories watching them for the first time, with my dad. Raiders was going to be my first pick. Lots of memories there and with the whole franchise. Of course it went 1.1, so I took my next favorite movie of this decade with Back to the Future.  Yes, I like Star Wars and yes I love the Indiana Jones franchise in its entirety since that one in 2008 doesn't exist, but the first few rounds felt too early to take sequels or third installments with so many other good movies to choose from.

I'm a sports guy and after making my first pick, I was definitely hoping Field of Dreams would make it back to me. Originally, I was hoping for a lower round one pick for this reason. Ideally wanted Caddyshack/Field of Dreams with a lower first round slot... but that was probably never going to happen. Sports seemed to be taking a back seat so I took the chance and took Ghostbusters ahead of it, which was a huge part of my childhood from the movies to cartoon to toys. Is Field of Dreams the best sports movie of the 80s? Of All time? debatable but we now have a field of dreams game in major league baseball so i'd say it certainly left its imprint on culture.

Sticking with the sports guy theme, I was very happy to get Raging Bull and Karate Kid. If Caddyshack had been there I could have had the 4 movies I most wanted that could have fit into the sports genre. I probably could have continued with Major League and Bull Durham, but needed to focus on other parameters. Lager did snipe me late with Bloodsport.

I feel like I won the Sports and Sci-Fi categories, If I do say so myself. Especially when you consider Ghostbusters could have just as easily slid into Sci-Fi.... and I'll fight anyone who thinks I didn't win the Family category with A Christmas Story!

On the downside, I don't have great Drama's and most probably wouldn't consider me to have great Horrors. Im not a horror movie fan. The horror movies I like have to fall right into that 'end of days', 'zombie apocalypse' theme for me to like them... think 28 Days Later.... OR they really have to make you think, like the original Saw movie. I'm not into most slasher films or most jumpy horrors with no plot... Definitely didn't win the Action category either but I think that was a category that could be left to wait after Raiders was picked because it really is so deep. I would have much preferred if Robocop was my 2nd pick here and I had somehow been able to snag Die Hard. Still, I don't see any glaring weaknesses aside from maybe the School category where I wanted to place Risky Business (another Lager snipe).

When I started thinking of this as building a movie marathon type watch list, I thought it was important to grab Back to the Future 2 and Ghostbusters 2. Being two of my top three picks and critical to the foundation of my watch list, and considering I loved both sequels, picking them up later made my draft feel that much more complete.

I ended up voting for Lager. There are some lineups I don't care all that much for based on my preferences but Lager seems to have the most movies I would have wanted on mine and he definitely sniped me the most.  From Terminator to major League, bloodsport, Big and Risky business, first blood, predator  and even Fletch. and yeah, Scarface even though I think its a tad overrated.

Well, I guess that it's fair in that you like what you like. Critics rave about Brokeback Mountain and I'll take their word for it, but I'll never see it.

I was dating this hippie hock that dragged me to see some of the the movies you mentioned.

Sorry I took a dump on your parade, buddy. 😂

When Harry met Sally

Pretty in Pink

These were 3 I thought would go for sure.  Pretty in Pink in particular is like Mt Rushmore of HS movies from the decade.  When Harry Met Sally, arguably the same for romance ("I'll have what she's having!").  9 1/2 weeks, just cause I was a horny teen.  :ninja:

I will write up my review/analysis later and vote as well. If I had a do over- I would have taken Tango and Cash somewhere. It’s cheese for sure, but you can’t go wrong with Sly and Russell

Movies I would have drafted later of the top of my head

Creepshow- Horror

Pet Sematary  -  Horror

Return of The Living Dead - Horror

Near Dark - Horror

Wisdom - Action adventure and great modern day Bonnie and Clyde

Uncommon Valor - War

Southern Comfort - War

Eight men Out - Sports

Uncle Buck - Comedy

Best Seller - Mystery

And more.

Every movie I drafted I like a lot accept for Three Men & A Baby but took that next to my last round to make it harder on Volt & Boston since I seen they still needed family. Plus I'm a Tom Selleck fan and to think he almost was the original Indiana Jones.

You didn't pressure me at all. Not in the slightest. My chick flick movie was in by that point. I'd long had my eye on Honey I Shrunk the Kids with Look Who's Talking as a backup if bostonlager hosed me. If you'd taken one of those and bostonlager the other, I'd have been pissed off and settled for Parenthood.

 My write up…

I had to take Caddy Shack as it’s one of my favorites all star of characters. And I knew there was no way it was coming back to me picking last. Same with Breakfast Club. Quentisential  80’s teen HS movie with a great cast and writing. I had no hesitation there and loved they fell to me. Three and four were also easy picking last in those two rounds. Two of THE best action movies of the eighties IMO. Couldn’t pass and I cacked blocked a few taking them back to back. So far I was feeling good. I knocked four out of the park. In my first four picks. Horror and comedy were next. Another two picks I was surprised were there I could not pass on HOFTW. Second funniest Mel Brooks movie. I knew the horror movies were flying so I picked Poltergeist. Fawking clowns and trees wanting to kill as a kid???  Evil Dead 2 always made me laugh hysterically. Loved that movie. Moonstruck was an ok chick pic. My ex slut wife said it was her favorite and I always like Cage. After getting sniped on quite a few I changed direction knowing I had to fill some spots. War Games was a good one and Drugstore Cowboy is a great movie. My sci-go’ are ok. I really like my dramas. Animation was great advice by Sux. Thought it was seventies. Let It Ride is my favorite pick. Mystery and family are meh. Fandango is in my top five movies ever. WC is as solid as I could have done

Lots of fun and thanks again for all of the creators and everyone involved. 👍👍👍

I thought you was going to go Look Who's Talking. I also thought Clue would be your mystery pick and was wrong on both.
