Cat #1

This cat started it all. I didn't want a cat. We had two dogs at the time.

It was summer 2014 and another dark day at the newspaper. I'd had to lay off someone earlier in the day.

I get a text from the wife. She had seen this tiny dirt ball running like Frogger across a busy major street. She fished it out from under a parked car. It was dirty and crusty, with its eyes almost shut from pus. My wife texted, "We found this little kitty in a parking lot and are rushing her to the vet."

At this point, I figured it already had a name, which it did.

I responded by saying it would go to the shelter the next day. My wife hinted that she wanted to keep her.

I texted back with a photo of a bass boat and said, "This little boat rolled across the parking lot and attached itself to my truck. Now I'm rushing it to the marina!"

Respectfully, my wife got a vet tech to take home and temporarily care for the kitty, which was around 7 to 8 weeks old, giving me time to think about it.

The next day, July 4, I met the tech at the clinic, and she had this little girl in a shoebox. I opened up the box, she gave me those big blue eyes and it was all over. She was all cleaned up and the cutest thing I've ever seen.

She soon found several ways to become endearing. First, she killed the biggest brown-recluse spider I've never seen. It was right next to my foot. On the evening I got laid off in August 2014, my wife was out of town with her son, and I was all along, with a combat bottle of wine, a chunk of Grizzly in my mouf and this kitten sitting in my lap. She kept me company while I contemplated the future.

Her health spiraled recently, but we determined it was due to a mouf infection. We got that fixed, and she's a real sweetheart. She loves to climb atop an office chair and hiss and swat at me while I spin the chair around and sing, "You're my little schmoopsy poo! You're my little jelly bean! You're my little hemorrhoid! You're my little can of beans."  Then she gets real fake made when I poke her butt and say, "Who's yer daddy!?!?!?!"

Cat #2

Months passed, and my wife saw this guy posted on Facebook. He was living outside in a neighborhood, and everyone thought it was someone else's cat, but it turns out he was homeless.

The first time we saw him, he put his paws atop a bird found and showed his a big stretch.

He tried to jump out the window as we brought him home. 

Our policy is indoor only and no declawing, but this guy kept darting outside, no matter how hard we kept him from doing so. He'll come out and just hang out on the back porch with us.

He's a lump and a big sweetheart.

We live out in the country, and sometime around summer 2017, this one just showed up in our driveway. She wasn't chipped. We put out "pet found" notices everywhere, and no one responded.

She has these big owl eyes. She's kind of a weirdo, but we love her.

Cat #4

Later in 2017, we got a call about a mama cat and her kittens under a car next to a boat dealership out in the country. By the time we got there, the mama and all but this little guy had disappeared. My wife spent two to three weeks bottle feeding him at all hours of the day.

He survived. Many of these "bottle babies" do not. Ultimately, he chose me and has become my BFF cat. He almost died in 2019 after he got histoplasmosis in his lungs, but an experimental drug cured him. Now he's a big fat bundle of hilarity.

Cat #5

This guy is a foster fail. He came into our system after someone moved away and left him in the year, where he spent day and night crying out for his people.

He was all bloodied and scarred from fighting, during which he contracted FIV, the cat version of FIV. Once they get fixed and no longer feel the need to fight, they're harmless to other cats. 

His foster went on vacation in late 2019, so we took him in, supposedly temporarily. He's been here ever since. We don't expect him to be around much longer, so we're pretty much Hospice for him. He's addicted to cheese and will patiently sit by the refrigerator until someone gives him some. Cats aren't supposed to have cheese, but he loves the stuff and has earned his right to have it.

Cat #6

This one came to us earlier this year as a nursing mother with three tiny kittens. All but one of the kittens has been adopted. The third is up at the lounge.

She's a pump tabby with big eyes that make her look like she's always on high alert.

I'd adopt her out in a heartbeat, but she has become my wife's favorite cat, so that's that. Another foster fail.

This guy came to us as a young kitten with a half dozen siblings. He's mostly a morning cat. He's around during the day but at his most social in the morning.

As part of our morning routine, we open the door, and the morning cats come in. He'll sit on us, make biscuits and purr his sack off. He has one of the longest tails I've ever seen.

We got a call in summer 2019 about a feral colony living under a house. The house owner had recently died. She was kind of a town celebrity and had been feeding this colony for years. She had a screen porch where they would come and go for food and water.

When we got there, we were able to scoop up a few of the young kittens that hadn't gone feral. Cats that were feral beyond rehabilitation were caught, fixed and released back to the house, where people still feed them to this day. 

Cat #8 was about 8 weeks old and on the bubble. She was young but already full of a lot of p!ss and vinegar.

She lived at my wife's business, which also served as a cat lounge. It took me months, but one day I managed to sneak up on her while she was on a tower and scratch her back. She tolerated it. Ever so slowly, she became more friendly.

But I still wore gloves when petting her. In spring 2020, when the business closed, I had to sneak up on her, scruff with gloved hands and shove her in a carrier to be brought home, where I had turned my garage into a cat lounge. 

I regularly pet her, but she seemed to hit a stopping point in completely leaving behind her feral ways. In the past week, I used a comb on her back, and she focking LOVES IT. So she did make a step forward. I've tried for years to get her adopted. She has become a bit of a celebrity in the foster world.

In late 2020, my wife spotted this crusty old cat scheduled for euthanasia at the Wichita, Kans., shelter. He'd sat there watching one shelter cat after another get adopted. Like Cat #5, he suffered from FIV, only he was at the end stages for it.

Taking pity on him, we drove seven hours to Wichita to get him, on my condition that we get two cats there in case he died on the way home. I didn't want to make that trip for nothing.

This guy was a disaster, with a cloudy eye and pus flowing out of his nose. We grabbed him and a kitten I'd picked out and returned. He survived the ride, and the kitten got adopted days later. 

We got him some medicine that greatly improved his condition. He lasted more than a year, dying earlier this year.

But not before we gave him a lot of love - and a wife!

Late last year, my wife spotted a female cat in similar condition in the Wichita shelter. A transportation chain brought her to us, where she remains to this day and is available for adoption. This little darling and her sister came to us as sick bottle babies. We frequently get kittens such as these from a colony that lives behind a local Lowe's and feeds off neighboring restaurant dumpsters. 

We nursed them back to health, and the fluffy sister recently got adopted. This one remains available for adoption. I've nicknamed her "Bugface." She's a sweet little thing and loves the laser pointer.

This beauty came to us from a hording situation. She most likely had never known human love and kindness as she got lost in the shuffle of more than 20 other cats, most of which were enormous. The homeowner had come down with altzheimer's and put into assisted living, so we were called in to capture all the cats in the home.

This one came home with us and spent her days hiding under a bed. I tried to pet her, resulting in a nasty bite that required a tetanus shot and antibiotics.

But as the days went by, she softened. Now she spends her evenings sitting with us on the couch. She is available for adoption.

Some of them we rarely see. One in particular used to just hide behind the couch, but he has been out and about a lot lately and hangs out on a cushion under the dining-room table. He'll let me walk up and pet him, and last night I managed to pick him up without bloodshed. He's still pouting about that and won't let me touch him today.

One thing I've learned about them is that they evolve over time. Some of them grow mellow. Some discover their inner playfulness. Others, such as this one, slowly begin to trust. 

For a long time I didn't think #11 would be tamed, but now she crawls in my lap every night and has become highly adoptable.

With the shy ones, we just keep grinding away on them until they become adoptable.

This sweetheart showed up one day at my wife's parents' house in a small town north of where I live. She has a notched ear, which means she was caught, spayed and released at some point. She also was chipped, and that led us to a shelter in the Dallas area. She was chipped, fixed and vaccinated there and released back into the outdoors, where she lived on the grounds of some truck-repair place.

How she got from there to the small town is unknown, but it's like two hours away.

We brought her home. She is the sweetest, most loving foster cat we've ever had. She has no desire to go outside, and I can't imaging this gentle soul living outside.

Once every few months, we partner with other cat-rescue groups in the region and ship cats to Canada, where they are in high demand.

This girl in two weeks will go to Canada, where she will be snapped up and given her forever home as soon as she arrives.

Sorry, Kopy, but you have been eliminated.

I have one cat and the smell is enough. I couldn't imagine having 12 plus cats roaming around, esp males that could spray or p!ss all over.

We don't let the cats in my boys' bedrooms, in our bathroom or in my office. Otherwise, they're free to roam around.

They all have their spots where the crash out for the day. 

The males don't spray once you get them fixed. 

Once Rusty III moves out in mid-August, we're moving everything in there. There is a doggie door, and I'm going to build an outdoor cattery they can get to through it.

I don't think this is true, but at any rate, one cat peeing where they shouldn't is awful. 

Our male cat decided to start doing this, and we had to rip out carpeting in the entire upstairs, replace baseboards, all kinds of stuff because the smell was just awful.

This one was feral as hell when she came to us as a nursing mother shortly before my wife had to close her business.

She was a good mother and served as a nursing mother to another litter of kittens who had lost their mom.

To get her to our house, I had to use gloves, sneak up on her while she was sleeping, scruff her and through her in the carrier.

She hid in our house for weeks but slowly started making appearances.

One day, I caught her napping on the kitchen counter. I gently put my hand on her and because scratching her back. She started to bolt but liked the scritches too much to run away.

Today, she is my No. 1 lap cat. She's very respectful and doesn't try to get in my lap while I'm eating. But the second I put the plate away, she's in my lap. Such a sweetie.

There might be more. My wife and sons tend to the cat boxes. I might clean them once every couple of months.

That's the deal we made when we got Cat #1. I do 100 percent of the yard work, which is a lot considering we live on 2 acres, plus at least half of the indoor work.

That cats don't come close to the mess the Great Pyrenees creates. He sheds like a cotton-candy machine, slobbers everywhere and tracks a mountain of dirt into the house. 

He's 10 years old, so he's considered a geriatric dog, which means the end is only a few years away.
