MLB Commish - Robot Umpires in 2024

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred Says Robot Umpires Are Coming to Baseball in 2024

Major League Baseball is getting ready to introduce an automated strike zone system for the 2024 season,  per MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.

While the exact nature of the automated system has yet to be determined and multiple options are being tested out in the minor leagues before the setup hits the majors, it will likely involve a robot determining balls and strikes and then relaying the call to a human home plate umpire through an earpiece.

“We have an automated strike zone system that works,” Manfred told ESPN. And that system is already in place at some Triple-A ballparks. “The umpire is going to have AirPods in, and the ball comes over…That basically tells them instantly if it’s a ball or strike.”

Once the system does get implemented, there will surely be glitches and those who are against the rise of robots will turn those molehills into mountains. But with the wheels in motion, it won’t really matter. Like the pitch clock, which is already shaving time off of games in the minor leagues, the robot umpires are coming.

I never thought there could be a worse commissioner than Betman, but Manfred really takes the cake.

Don't like anything when they take out the human factor.  Not a good idea. Instant replay is enough.

Ya know how MLB currently judges the umpires after every game? By using a computer. All this does is cut out the middle-man.

No need for players either and we can just have robots playing against robots.  Don't have to worry about injuries either. Awesome! Welcome to the Twilight Zone!

Never understood how umpires were able to get away with having "their" own strike zone.  This should've been done a decade ago.

Trying to figure out if this helps the batter or the pitcher.  Probably the batter.

Umpires have the absolute worst view of the pitch and have to guess based on what it looked like before losing site of the ball behind the catcher. It's amazing they're as accurate as they are, which isn't all that accurate.

I'm with you, I think it should've been implemented years ago and I agree it probably helps the batter more. Seems pitchers gets the benefit of doubt more often than not.

Sure might as well...  Manfred has already messed up MLB with all of the terrible rule changes in the recent past...

So what happens to the home plate ump, he just makes calls on foul balls and plays at home?

Is there a way that fans can vote to get rid of a commissioner?  If not, Manfred is a reason to have that ability.

That would be a cool job, however unfortunately I would still need owner approval/MLBPA on rule changes, so I couldn't make executive decision changes, which would suck completely...
