The "gay frogs" thing is based on real science research, amazingly.

Apparently, a frogs' genders is determined late in gestation and influenced by the environment around them. So when scientists were wondering why this certain population of frogs were 99% female, they determined that a chemical in the water was the reason.

So, when Alex comes across something like this, and the spin he comes up with, "they're putting chemicals in the water to turn the frogs gay"... there's actually some truth there. Even here, he's on solid ground for the first step or three down his rabbit hole.
