Ww2 - Japan

Recommended Posts

Interesting. Prior to Pearl harbor, America was supplying 80% of Japan's oil.

Meanwhile, Japan was already fighting Russia to the north and China to the south.

Not to mention the Dutch, French and British who all had territories around the West Indies.

Seems like a really stupid move. Even moreso now.

The US cut off oil to Japan the year before Pearl Harbor. Japan wanted to take out the Pacific Fleet so they could grab more resource (especially oil) rich areas in the Pacific.

As has been said, Japan had no choice but to attack or become an ally. And the attack was wildly successful.  History shows it was futile.

The attack was successful for the most part but it did not have the affect on the US that Japan thought it would.

Yes, thus the futility, something we might refer to as a "fool's errand".  Usually recognized in hindsight.
