Tony Dungy to attend March for Life, dubbed right-wing extremist

Hall of Fame football coach Tony Dungy announced Wednesday on Twitter that he will be attending the March for Life in Washington, D.C., on Friday.

The two-time Super Bowl champion (one as a player, one as a coach) said he will attend "to support those unborn babies who don’t have a voice."

It will be his first time at the rally, and it has sparked criticism in the media.

Dave Zirin, sports editor for The Nation, said he is "done with Tony Dungy and the way the NFL and NBC coddle his right wing extremism."

Zirin says Dungy is "someone venerated throughout the NFL world as a man of character" but "has spent years as an anti-gay bigot."

Zirin wrote: "He said publicly and proudly that he would not want gay football player Michael Sam on his team. He said over a decade ago that he disagreed with the "lifestyle" of Jason Collins, the first out active male gay player in the main four North American sports. This is a Dungy staple, calling being LGBT a ‘lifestyle,’ even after people have said to him repeatedly how hurtful and outdated such a description is. He simply doesn’t care."

He also ripped the NFL and NBC, where Dungy hosts "Football Night in America," for "celebrating" him and his politics.

"This is a staggering indictment of the politics the NFL and the network’s partners allow and the kind that they condemn. When someone like, gee, I don’t know, Colin Kaepernick steps up and kneels down to end police violence and racial inequity, he becomes a pariah. Meanwhile, Dungy is held up as a deeply religious man and nearly a patron saint of the league. Dungy has used his devoutness as a cover for his anti-gay rhetoric and sharing platforms with unapologetic bigots…
 

"If Dungy wants a show on ‘The Daily Wire,’ more power to him," Zirin wrote. "But his being center stage on the most watched program in the country makes NBC and the NFL complicit in his disinformation and political posturing. Like Dungy, neither NBC nor the NFL has commented about his latest eruption. But their silence speaks volumes. It’s a silence that’s almost as loud as Dungy’s hateful blather, almost as loud as the thousands of people descending upon Washington—some mandatorily—to celebrate a fascistic, discredited Supreme Court and the loss of our rights. It’s shameful. And we should not be afraid to say so."

I have no problem with Tony Dungy’s pro-life stance though I disagree with it. However, his previous anti gay statements are unfortunate. Sadly he’s not unique in that regard.

Zirin is not criticizing dungy for attending a parade, he's criticizing his anti gay views.

I know its hard for a lefty to understand certain things, but I will try to help any way

I'm pro choice, yet I don't get offended when Dungy, or anyone, voices their opinion that life should be protected since birth. See how easy that is?

I don't care if someone is gay, but I also can respect someone for pushing back when something is shoved down their throat that they don't want. Accepting gays with open arms has had good and bad consequences. The good - normal gays don't have to be terrified of hiding something that they can't change about themselves. Its just who they are. The bad - the movement evolved into attempting to make people feel guilty when they pushed back on child porn and grooming of children.

I appreciate that Dungy was able to see the end game of accepting gays better than I was back in the Michael Sam days.

This is true, and it's on purpose. I can't separate myself from it yet. Mainly because I know there are a bunch of lefties who will get their way if nothing is done. You like to summarize a lot.  Liberals are dumb.  Liberals hate Christianity, love islam, they're disgusting, etc.

I'll try and explain to you what's going on and let's see if you can grasp it.

You make a lot of assumptions, summarize a lot, in order to group people together, and you assign a particular view to them, a view against your own, so that you can have an enemy.  It simplifies life for you to have an enemy.  But this isn't how life works.

For example, we know that not all liberals hate Christianity, or a majority even, maybe it's some.  But you say all, because it's what you're told, and it's easier for your mind to grasp.

You're problem is thinking that I'm religious.  I'm just calling out the hypocrisy of the left.  I fine with all religions doing their thing.  In this country, we have the RIGHT to practice our religions without persecution.  Because of that, I'm fine with Christians doing their thing... Muslims doing their thing... Jews doing their thing.  Have at it.  What's odd is that these religions are pretty much the same on principle, yet, only one of them is considered a right wing extremist faith.  The others are not, mainly because their members are considered minorities.  Hence, why I'm calling out the liberal politicians, media, and blind followers, as hypocrites.

 

I also come across a lot of liberals on a daily basis, I live in NJ after all.  They parrot a lot of things they you claim that I'm making an assumption on.  So no, they're not assumptions.  They're reactions to people I see in real life.  Most of the liberals I see are on the far left (and deny it - much like our FBG Refugee Tim who think Trump is corrupt but Biden is a genuinely nice guy), who are of the atheist mode (not all atheists are liberals), and think Christianity is terrible religion... yet, go to bat for Muslims and Jews.  Personally, even though I don't believe in God, I'm fine with any religion doing what they want to do.  Have at it.  The ONLY people that don't feel that way, are the far leftists.  I believe there are more far leftists than general run of the mill Democrats.  My evidence is the fact that everywhere I turn, anything on the news that Democrats don't support, is considered "far right", "extremist", or "alt right".

 

Like I said above, when I talking about Liberals being idiots, I'm talking about the politicians, media, and blind followers.  The latter, is what we seem to have an abundance of, here on this board.

I don't think I consider boycotting something based hatred. Plus, I don't care if they don't want the album just like I don't mind if liberals don't want to go to Florida because they don't like how it's governed. I'm talking more about people taking their hatred to press and smearing the names of decent people. 

If some nutbag conservative wants to not buy an album, then so be it. If they want to get 1000 other crazies together and go on media tour for a year and trash Pink Floyd, or go disrupt one of their concerts in some manner or blow up the recording studio, then that's where I draw the line.

Yeah, it's the same 6 colors that was on that first cover of Dark Side of the Moon. The prism cover. I know one thing about that cover, they wanted it to be a very simple cover. And I think something about representing their band on stage and it's writing or something like that. I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan. I could have done without the whole war messaging in general over the years, but it worked well for their musical style and they sure did turn out some bad ass music. My favorite album is Animals.

I know nothing about any of the band members personal lives or thoughts on life, etc, and I'll probably keep it that way and say they are the greatest band ever. I practice that approach with everyone who is part of the music I like, the movies I like, the shows I like, etc. I don't want to know anything about anybody if I like their work. Simply because when I hear what guys like Tom Hanks and Robert DeNiro have to say in real life, it makes me hate watching their movies. I prefer not knowing them at all and liking the movies. 

Some people are sensitive by some of the messaging coming out of the media and politicians these days and allow it to cloud their minds and they jump to wrong conclusions about things. Happens all the time. And they make themselves look bad in the big picture. They deserve a good retort when they are obviously going down the wrong track. It's just when they take it to extremes is when they deserve a good ass kicking and a tough lesson taught to them.

I have no problem with it either.  Where I have a problem is when it goes from voicing that opinion to blocking people from making a different decision for themselves.  That's when it becomes not as easy as you are trying to frame it.
