You know everyone points out how nazis burned books... but they never ask what books were getting burned.

But of course that wouldn’t happen because most people on the liberal side don’t believe in any kind of censorship.

Dear God, Cancel Culture is a widely accepted left wing practice. Opposing the left wing activists is risking your job and career.

These antics between parents and school boards are forced by both left and right.  They spend scarce resources to push agendas.  Forgotten in this, often, is that libraries are not the critical repository of information they once were.  They are not our nearly exclusive cultural archives they were generations ago.  This is particularly so of school libraries.  Kids are experts at accessing information.  This pretense that if it is not in a school library they cannot obtain the information is farcical.  So too the pretense that kids wil take a physical book off a shelf and read it. The information, all information  is available in public libraries and on-line.  I'd wager kids can find it 100 times faster than the average adult using their tech devices.  To me the only relevant discussion is forced reading in the curriculuum.  There too I wish our kids to be provided the fundamental tools to think for themselves.  I would not have schools in the indoctrination business.  I know that is a difficult line to walk when history and civics really need to be introduced in school along with the three R's.

Salad is good for you, it unbinds the bowel.  Eat some, take a dump, and feel oh so refreshed.  You will have a bounce in your step.

FYI, my girls were home schooled and on-line schooled.  They all went to private universities, three in the Ivy league and one a Jesuit university.  All are well-employed and happy.  None are transgendered, LGBTQ+, or suicidal.  All donate time to their communities. None have an arrest record.

So you are old and didn't have to deal with this but feel the need to chime in anyway.  Got it.

Well I'm sure Hitler was no slouch in the transportation department.  I'm sure he did a more than Buttigiegian job himself.  Buttigiegian, that is a new term, like being Munsoned or Brockmired.

Is it more beneficial in these back and forths to be right about something in the first place or to be wrong, called out, and then admitting to the transgressions?

liberals have recently edited Willy Wonka books to remove offensive material and add wokeness.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/danidiplacido/2023/02/21/woke-willy-wonka-roald-dahl-controversy-explained/?sh=50a561473816

Classic children’s books written by Roald Dahl, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda, are being rewritten to remove potentially offensive language, a move which has offended readers across the internet.

The changes were made by the publisher, Puffin, and the Roald Dahl Story Company, which is now owned by Netflix; the streaming giant acquired the literary estate in 2021 for a reported $1 billion, and plan to use Dahl’s stories as a launchpad for “the creation of a unique universe across animated and live-action films and TV,

Sensitivity readers have combed over the works of Dahl, and smoothed over the edges of a notoriously sharp, spiky author, removing words and adding entire passages; Augustus Gloop is no longer “fat,” he’s “enormous” (still seems kind of mean, but ok), while Mrs Twit from The Twits is no longer “ugly,” just “beastly.”

Any parent who has read Dahl’s books to their children knows that there are deranged tirades nestled among these wonderful stories, like razor blades hidden inside a succulent candy bar. Dahl is such a uniquely unhinged, wildly imaginative writer who, sometimes, goes on weird rants where he gleefully fat shames children, or ties physical beauty directly to virtue.

Some of the word changes, however, don’t seem to make much sense at all. The words “black” and “white” have been removed; the BFG no longer wears a black cloak, for some reason, and characters no longer turn “white with fear,” the Daily Telegraph reported.

Here is what needs to happen- there needs to be better vetting of the lgbtq materials.  If there are not more appropriate books geared to that group, authors need to think long and hard about why so many examples like this come from them.

I don't expect a school librarian, or whoever is ordering materials, to read every book cover to cover.  I'd guess what is happening is they are attempting to cater to all students, see a book on a list of recommended books, order it and put it in the shelf.

Cancel culture, which IMO is sometimes good, sometimes bad, is not the same as censorship. Censorship is when the government restricts access to books and freedom of speech. Cancel culture usually regards private companies. So long as the government isn’t involved it’s not the same.

I was told there was no slippery slope.  "Don't worry" the real timid whispered when Mark Twain was edited to give us Melinated James. "There will be no need" we were assured, for further reviews once they cleaned up the foul mouth on that digusting dirty Mick, that white male bathed in privilege as the only bathing he would ever voluntarily do, that Huck Finn.

I wonder.  I have not read Tom Sawyer in 55 years.  Is Injun Joe now Brave, Noble, Wrongfully Oppressed by the white Devils Native American Joseph?  That would be hard to say every time you addressed him.

That Mark Twain was pretty racist.  I suppose if he had a third "classic" novel it would have featured some asian protagonist with a name including a reference to his heritage.

That school board member reading that passage could take a lesson from Sally Kellerman on how to read a passage with feeling.

Sounds like it was a lot of different types of books, including ones about socialism, communism, critics of the Nazi regime, books by Hemingway, Helen Keller, Jack London, Jewish authors among others.
