The bus driver needed some kind of weapon/the presence of mind in order to feel like opening the door was a valid option. Just let the guy get slaughtered?

The headspace there seemed to be taking comfort from their fear that the guy was fixated on the victim alone. 

Also, I bet any altercation between the murderer and his victim was completely on the murderer. Murderer looks like the type to do what he did.
