Jack Reid, 17, a student at Lawrenceville School in New Jersey took his own life after being bullied by other students...A year after his death a school statement recognizes the failure of the school to protect Jack noting how inaction by teaching staff contributed to his death....School has committed to taking corrective actions including appointing a new dean who will be responsible for dealing with mental health issues ....He died on April 30, 2022, but in the 12 months leading up to his death he had become the victim of a vicious bullying campaign that consisted of cruel and malicious rumors that labelled him as a campus rapist.  The rumors were made up by fellow students and were said to Jack both in person and posted anonymously online thereby spreading the story beyond the campus walls. During a secret Santa gift exchange among his classmates, Jack was given a rape whistle together with a book about how to make friends.

....Although school staff were made aware of the bullying, the school has now admitted make an extraordinary admission of failure on the anniversary of Jack's death....'There were steps that the School should in hindsight have taken but did not,' the school wrote in a lengthy statement.....Most damning of all is the fact the school did not make a public or private statement that it had in fact investigated the rape and found the rumors about Jack and the entire story to be completely untrue. Neither Jack not his parents were ever told that he had been exonerated over the claims.....

The US government should confiscate 100% of any money that Americans make above $999m, the leftwing independent senator Bernie Sanders said late last week. “Yeah,” Sanders replied. “You may disagree with me but, fine, I think people can make it on $999m. I think that they can survive just fine.”

Wallace had earlier mentioned how the late Sam Walton could make the giant retail chain Walmart the largest single private employer in the US thanks to his family’s net worth of about $225bn. Sanders countered that Walmart in many cases pays starvation wages to its 1.2 million employees despite how rich the Waltons are.....“Many of their workers are on Medicaid or food stamps,” Sanders said, referring to forms of government assistance for which low-income Americans can qualify. “In other words, taxpayers are subsidizing the wealthiest family in the country. What's unfortunate is Bernie Sanders, while I don't think he's completely right, there are issues where some aspects that he brings up that have a good point, and those are points that are worth actually discussing ( income inequality, lack of opportunity for employment, many Americans unable to meet their basic survival needs, etc, etc) Unfortunately no one wants to listen to a millionaire, being paid with OUR TAX DOLLARS in his government salary, benefits and future pension rattle on about the crimes of the "Top 1 Percent" of wealth in this country when he's also a member of this vaunted "gilded class" 

There is what Sanders had to say about Wall Street - “The reality is that for the past 40 years, Wall Street and the billionaire class has rigged the rules to redistribute wealth and income to the wealthiest and most powerful people of this country.”

However, some of Sander's largest political donations come from other "Top 1 Percent" people who are either employed or run some of the industry’s biggest names around Wall Street - JPMorgan, Citigroup, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley.

Federal judge John Gallagher ruled Monday the After School Satan Club can begin holding meetings at Saucon Valley Middle School.....The long-awaited decision said the Saucon Valley School District violated the First Amendment when it revoked the club's approval. In his opinion, Judge Gallagher recognized the difficulty Superintendent Jaime Vlasaty faced following a shooting threat related to the Satan Club, calling her position "unenviable."

The White House press secretary claimed that reopening schools from the COVID-19 lockdowns was a major priority of the Biden administration.....Conservatives skewered White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre for claiming that President Biden had made it a "priority" to reopen schools after the COVID-19 lockdowns....A reporter brought up the toll the lockdowns took on children's education during Wednesday's press briefing, and asked the press secretary what Biden’s plan is to help kids catch up from learning loss....

"Look, as you just said, kids have lost so much in the pandemic," Jean-Pierre replied. "This is why, when the president walked in, he made a priority to open schools, one of the things that was important to do to make sure that our kids, who have lost so much, were able to go back in-person school if they choose, have the resources that they needed to really succeed and move forward in their education.....We saw that, unfortunately, the pandemic had a unfortunate effect on our young people, on our kids," she went on, saying Biden "was committed" and that's why he fought so hard for the American Rescue Plan, which is what allowed them to open schools.

White House officials and Democratic lawmakers have attempted in recent days to reframe their position on school reopening policies amid the COVID-19 pandemic.....Democrats have argued that they always supported students returning to in-person instruction and that President Biden's massive $1.9 trillion reconciliation package in March 2021 helped facilitate schools reopening nationwide, even though Republican-led states like Florida succeeded in returning students to classrooms well before the Biden stimulus package. 

....On Thursday, the National Center for Education Statistics released a report showing that, during the pandemic, American students' reading proficiency dropped to a two-decade low and mathematics scores falling for the first time ever. ....In addition, schools in states that voted for former President Trump in 2020 reopened 75% of the time while those that voted for Biden reopened 37.6% of the time during the 2020-2021 academic year.....

Democrats widely condemned Trump and Republican governors like Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., for aggressively pushing for schools reopening in fall of 2020. "Floridians deserve science-based action from Gov. Ron DeSantis," Biden said prior to the 2020 election. "While other large states continue to take strong, urgent, and sweeping action to stop the spread of COVID-19, Florida has not."

In March 2021, DeSantis accused Biden of being subservient to teachers unions that opposed reopening schools....."His goal should have been yesterday to get everybody back in school, but he can’t do that because he doesn’t want to upset the teachers’ union," DeSantis said. "It’s a pathetic failure of leadership to not stand up for these kids and these families."

Minnesota Man Gets Less Than 180 Days In Jail For Raping Girls Aged 4 And 9

A 20-year-old man from Rochester, Minnesota, will spend less than six months in jail for raping two girls aged four and nine....Mohamed Bakari Shei was sentenced to 176 days in the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center on Monday for two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with someone under 13...In addition to the jail sentence, District Judge Jacob Allen gave Shei 30 years of supervised probation and 200 hours of community work service, according to the report. Shei pled guilty to raping a nine-year-old girl several times beginning on Mother’s Day 2018 and another girl around four or five years old in 2021.....

....At Shei’s sentencing hearing, one of his victims gave a statement about her experience dealing with the sexual assaults. “There is no moving on or getting over it. I’ve tried,” she said, according to the outlet. .....Shei’s plea deal does not require that he register as a sex offender.

Rochester man given 180 days in jail for raping girls

Shei was facing three different felony first-degree criminal conduct charges in two separate cases. His plea deal called for no prison time, a stay of adjudication and the dismissal of two out of three charges. If Shei completes his probation, all charges against him will be dismissed and will not be on his criminal record.....Shei entered an Alford plea in December 2022, meaning that while he does not admit guilt, he admits that a jury would convict him based on the evidence....

A female juvenile reported to a Rochester police investigator in April 2020 that Shei first raped her on Mother's Day in 2018 at a Rochester residence. The juvenile would have been around 9 years old on that date.....Shei told her that he would give her money for a book fair at school or buy her toys, the juvenile told police....A different juvenile told an RPD investigator in June 2021 that Shei had raped her several times at the same residence during the same time period.....
