Democratic donors hope to recruit NBA legends Grant Hill and Dwyane Wade to run for Senate in Florida

....NBA legends Dwyane Wade and Grant Hill have rocketed to the top of the recruitment lists for some Florida Democrats looking for a strong candidate to run against Sen. Rick Scott in 2024.  There have been separate active efforts to get both to consider forays into state politics.... three sources familiar with the situation said. The Party operatives and donors see the need for a moonshot-type candidate to reverse the trend of Republican dominance in the state, in which most recently Gov. Ron DeSantis won re-election by a double-digit margin. Yet even they acknowledge that getting either one of them is a long shot....

.....“Grant Hill has great name ID. He would raise a boatload of money .....” said John Morgan, an Orlando-based trial attorney and national Democratic donor, who has spoken directly with Hill about his desire for him to run. “Grant Hill would beat the s--- out of Rick Scott.”....Morgan brought up the idea of Hill’s running for the Senate over dinner Sunday night with Larry Grisolano, a partner and the CEO of the David Axelrod-founded Democratic consulting firm AKPD Message and Media, at the home of Bob Mandell, who was the Obama administration’s ambassador to Luxembourg from 2011 to 2016......Hill, who played seven seasons with the Orlando Magic and lives in the Orlando area, has not been publicly political on a regular basis. He campaigned with Hillary Clinton in Jacksonville in 2016 and has criticized former President Donald Trump ...Hill did not respond to a text message seeking comment. He and Morgan are business partners.

Democratic donor groups have openly discussed the idea of recruiting Wade, who played 13 seasons with the Miami Heat, to run for the Senate.....Beyond having star power in the state, Wade has become an outspoken advocate for transgender rights. His 15-year-old daughter, Zaya, is a transgender model and activist. ....“My family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there,” Wade said on Showtime’s “Headliners with Rachel Nichols” last month. “And so that’s one of the reasons why I do not live there.”....“Dwyane Wade is a Florida legend, whose leadership past and present has a lot of folks in our state sending feelers out,” said Ray Paultre, the executive director of the Florida Alliance, a progressive donor group that plays a significant role in Florida Democratic politics. “We have seen former athletes, in both parties, bring something special to the political landscape......but he is on the list of four or five dream candidates to challenge Rick Scott.....

....Democrats in Florida have not won a Senate race since the 2012 re-election of Bill Nelson, whom Scott defeated in 2018. They have not held the Governor’s Mansion or either chamber of the Legislature since the 1990s.....“Top donors and party leaders know they need different kinds of candidates with pre-existing profiles to mount statewide campaigns,” said a veteran Florida Democratic operative, who was granted anonymity to discuss candidate recruiting strategy. “There’s a short list of retired athletes and business leaders who could fit that bill, and Dwyane Wade tops that list. There are definitely conversations underway about recruiting Wade or a retired athlete like him to challenge Scott.....”

Dwyane Wade responds to ex-wife's objection to their trans daughter's name change: 'This isn't a game'

.....Former NBA player Dwyane Wade responded to allegations from his former wife Thursday, after she said in a court filing earlier this week that he’s trying to make money off their transgender daughter’s “name and gender change.”....Zaya, 15, came out as trans in 2020, and Wade filed a petition with the Los Angeles County Superior Court in August to have her name legally changed.....Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, who was married to Wade from 2002 to 2010, asked the court to deny his petition in an objection that her lawyers filed Tuesday. She said that Wade “may be pressuring our child to move forward with the name and gender change" in order to profit from business opportunities that Zaya was offered, and argued that Zaya should wait until she's 18 to decide if she wants to legally change her name.

In a statement posted to Instagram early Thursday, Wade said Funches-Wade's allegations "have hurt our children."....“While none of us are surprised by Siohvaughn’s attempt to fight Zaya’s identity and her unwavering attempt to drag my name through the mud, I’m very disappointed that she continuously find ways of centering herself and HER needs, without regard to her children,” Wade wrote........In an email to NBC News on Friday, Funches-Wade called her ex-husband’s Instagram remarks “derogatory,” “untrue” and “hurtful," and she said she will continue to “love and protect” her children and do what “is best for them.” ....“I will also continue to do what the laws of this land allow me to do as a parent with the parental right and power under the constitution in courts of law and not the court of public opinion....”

"..... our children’s lives have been highly publicized,” she said. “..... has appeared on national television shows and in media reports regarding our child’s name and gender change. I am concerned that our child is being commercialized at a young age and also of the uncontrollable consequences of media exposure i.e. cyber bullying, statements and/or pictures taken out of context of our child, and unwanted spotlight focused on our child.”....She also said that Wade violated their custody agreement by allowing Zaya to transition without consulting Funches-Wade first....

Gavin Newsom considering Oprah Winfrey to replace Dianne Feinstein in Senate: report

.....Media mogul Oprah Winfrey is being floated as a potential replacement for ailing Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) should the 89-year-old lawmaker step down before the end of her term....Feinstein, who returned to the Senate earlier this month, has already said she will not run for re-election in 2024....Newsom has previously vowed to appoint a black woman should Feinstein’s seat open up....During the 2022 midterm elections, Winfrey waded into politics and endorsed several Democrats in high-profile races, including John Fetterman in Pennsylvania, Cheri Beasley in North Carolina, Val Demmings in Florida, Mandela Barnes in Wisconsin, Beto O’Rourke in Texas, Raphael Warnock in Georgia and Stacey Abrams in Georgia....

....On Thursday, the Los Angeles Times reported that Feinstein is being shielded from interacting with reporters and photographers on Capitol Hill by aides and the Senate sergeant-at-arms....A source close to the senator described her condition as “frightening,” according to the New York Times, as she has suffered vision and balance impairments and facial paralysis known as Ramsay Hunt syndrome from her case of shingles....As a rare side effect, she also developed encephalitis, which can cause the brain to swell and may affect her language skills, sleep and mood....

Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle reportedly floated as potential replacements for Dianne Feinstein

....Oprah Winfrey and Meghan Markle are reportedly among those being considered to replace late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. ....Winfrey's name is among those being floated for the role.....It was announced Friday that Feinstein died at age 90. All eyes have since turned to Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who will appoint someone to serve out the remaining 13 months of Feinstein's term. The two term governor, who attended the second GOP debate in Simi Valley last week on behalf of President Biden's re-election campaign to lead counter Republican messaging, has stated in the past he will appoint a Black woman to the Senate in the event of Feinstein's passing.....

......Newsom reportedly has national ambitions of his own amid rumors of a potential 2028 presidential run. As recently as earlier last week, Newsom insisted he would not challenge Biden in 2024. Meanwhile, sources told The Daily Mail that the Duchess of Sussex's name has also been thrown in the ring as Feinstein's potential replacement. She and Prince Harry reside in Montecito, California......Markle's name was reportedly considered for the U.S. Senate before the 2020 election when Biden chose Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate. At that time, a senior Labour Party source told the Mail that Markle had been "networking among senior Democrats" on the venture of building a grassroots campaign eventually targeting a presidential bid of her own. ...Markle has grown a close friendship with Gloria Steinem. A friend fo Steinem's told the Mail, "Gloria has been introducing Meghan to pivotal people within the party."...."Meghan is interested in politics more than anything else. That's where she believes her power is, but she has had to focus on making money....."

......Newsom has said he would avoid the field of candidates already campaigning for Feinstein's post, which will be on the ballot next year and includes Rep. Barbara Lee, one of the state's most prominent Black women currently serving in elected office. In the hours after Feinstein's death, Newsom quickly faced calls to honor his commitment to name a Black woman for the role, with some leaders calling on him specifically to name Lee to the post, a reminder of the fraught dynamic Newsom faces with a key Democratic constituency..... A handful of Black women in office have been floated as possibilities, including Secretary of State Shirley Weber and Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell.

California to allow some Mexican residents near border to get in-state community college tuition

....Low-income Mexican students living near the US border can now cross over and attend certain community colleges in California at in-state tuition rates under a new law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom. The legislation, signed by the Democratic governor on Friday, applies to low-income Mexican residents who live within 45 miles of the California-Mexico border and want to attend one of the participating community colleges in the southern part of the Golden State.

The current average California community college tuition per year is $1,246 for in-state students and $6,603 for those from out-of-state.....Currently, about 7,000 students cross the California-Mexico border each day, according to the Sacramento Bee.....Separately, Newsom on Friday also signed a new law raising the minimum wage for healthcare workers to $25 per hour over the next decade.....The new law is the second minimum wage increase Newsom has signed after he approved legislation to raise the minimum pay for fast food workers to $20 per hour.

The latest move was somewhat unexpected given Newsom’s administration had previously expressed concerns about the bill because of how it would impact the state’s struggling budget....California’s Medicaid program is a major source of revenue for many hospitals....Newsom’s administration had warned the wage increase would have caused the state to hike its Medicaid payments to hospitals by billions of dollars.

Same.  He would be a formidable opponent. We got to know him here in Phoenix; I always pegged him as a conservative.

Wade, meh, too much baggage. I don't know him enough to speak to his intelligence.

Oprah would obviously be a major force, presumptive favorite, in almost any race she entered.  I would hope she channels her inner conservative as well.

Markel

California Senate race will prove whether Democrats care about diversity

Do California Democrats believe that representation matters, or do they just pretend to? We’re about to get our answer.

The death on Sept. 29 of longtime Democratic senator Dianne Feinstein opens up a racial and gender quagmire that is sure to bedevil Democrats for many months to come. Early this month, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) appointed Laphonza Butler, a Black lesbian and president of Emily’s List, to the Senate at least until the upcoming special election (November 2024) to fill the remainder of Feinstein’s term. But that hardly settles the question of who Feinstein’s long-term successor will be. Two prominent Democratic members of Congress — Reps. Katie Porter and Adam Schiff — had already launched candidacies for Feinstein’s seat in anticipation of her retirement. Rep. Barbara Lee joined the race shortly after Feinstein officially announced her retirement......Time and again, it has been shown that Black women are the heart and soul of the Democratic Party. Democrats across the country agree that Black women are badly underrepresented in our nation’s leadership. Schiff and Porter are White; Lee is a Black woman. The right course is clear, isn’t it?

It would be, anyway, if the participants had the courage and principles to follow it: Schiff and Porter should step aside and reembrace their vital leadership roles in the House. And the rest of the state’s Democratic leaders should walk their talk and throw their clout behind Lee’s bid for the state’s full six-year seat in the Senate.....Why is electing a Black woman to the Senate in California a moral imperative?....Consider the numbers: Before becoming vice president in 2021, Kamala D. Harris was just the second Black woman ever to serve in the Senate, after Sen. Carol Moseley Braun (D-Ill.) in the 1990s. With Butler’s appointment, that’s three Black women in more than two centuries.

California’s Democratic leaders have an opportunity to do more than pay lip service to their rhetoric around diversity. It wouldn’t hurt to remind them that Harris gave up one of California’s seats to serve the country. They need to know, and show, that forcing genuine equality isn’t easy or comfortable. It requires hard decisions, especially for White people who might have to disappoint their friends or sacrifice their egos and ambitions for the sake of the larger cause.

Put on your helmet. Whatever senator get spurt out of that cancerous sh*thole will suck ass and grow increasingly obnoxious over the ensuing decades.

At least Laugh is a temporary placeholder who won't have enough time to do much more than toe the party line.
