Nice post. Love them. Have a feeder that you pit the water and red color in. Beyond fascinating. I had one land on my wrist whilst filling and hanging the feeder up. Beautiful to watch.

I've got four feeders out, and they're getting drained fast.

The dought conditions around here have affected their natural food supply, so they're all about those feeders.

I made a homemade feeder out of an empty spice jar with a red cap, but they haven't touched that one.

They are neat to watch and haven't seen any since I lived in the woods.

 I read up on them many moons ago as I kept seeing them in the bayous. Little known fact: they weigh about six ounces and they can flap their wings up to two hundred times a minute.it’s my second favorite bird. Beautiful.

My hummingbird feeder gives me constant joy.  Love hearing the bzzzzzz of their wings when I'm outside and they fly past me to get to the feeder.  Sounds like a giant insect.

I live in PNW which is a year round habitat and breeding ground for them, so I very rarely see more than a single hummingbird on my feeder.  Apparently they're pretty territorial so if anything I see one hummer fighting off another that gets too close.   Kinda like how yer moms fight over my cack.

My brother from another mother lives in Denver and has three feeders on his back deck. Says you use three parts water one part sugar. Plus red die. Make a gallon jug of this mixture and put it in the fridge. Amazing how hungry they are.

I go with four parts water, one part sugar and no die. They find the feeders just fine.

It's fun sitting out on the porch and seeing them all over the place in the trees, waiting for their minute to zoom in for a drink.

I feel guilty when I bring in the feeder for the weekly cleaning and a hummer immediately shows up and buzzes around the now missing feeder.  During the summer there is no shortage of flowers in our back yard, but I guess they want to go the McDonald's route for quick and easy sugar.

Do you get more than one at the feeder, or do they chase each other off?

Just pulled feeder down for the year. Dont want them hanging around michigan any longer than they are supposed to.  They also feed on some of the flowers my wife has decoratimg the deck.

They chase off each other, but I spread out the feeders. Everything I've read is four parts water and one part sugar. I don't imagine dye is very good for them, which is why I don't buy the store crap. 

I used to boil the water before mixing the sugar with it, but I've found it's just fine to use a whisk and my Popeye forearms from constant masterbation to vigorously dissolve the sugar. I'll pull up the feeders later this month so they'll be on their way to Mexico and not stick around. But they need those feeders right now. Mighty dry and no flowers around here lately.

After Hurricane Rita, which blew all the flowers to chit, this dude down the street set up a tent and had like 20 feeders in there. The hummingbirds got along quite nicely as they slurped up the sugar water, and there were dozens of them. Funny little things.
