In the market......anyone have a 4runner? Thoughts?

I’ve had a 4Runner before. I do really like them. They are beastly and fun to drive (not in a sporty sense, obviously, but more in a utilitarian/outdoorsman way).

But good focking god the gas mileage is terrible. It is essentially a truck. I believe it’s essentially the Tacoma made into an SUV, IIRC?

Anyway, they really hold their value so you won’t likely get a great deal on a used one. But it’s Toyota so they’re pretty reliable and long lasting. Just make sure it wasn’t beat up too much

I’ve got two of them. A 2012 and a 2022.  @IGotWormsis right on the fuel mileage and it being a truck. You can look underneath the bottom of a late 90s Tacoma and see the same chassis. I just went and looked at the fuel mileage tracker and my 2012 says 17.2 mpg with mostly suburban type driving.  It is, hands down the best vehicle I’ve owned for dependability. My 2012 has over 200k and still runs like new. If comfort and drivability is a premium, I wouldn’t put it at the top of the list, though.

I'm currently driving a 2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk....looking to update & also have more room. From my research,  I like the reliability & long-term data. I know it's a truck like ride & that I'll take a hit on fuel milage but I can't stand the looks of anything else in it's class. It's also pretty rugged & as mentioned....should last a long time. I'm hoping to find a 23 & first thing off have it oil undercoated.

What type of undercoat?  Not sure if you’ve seen him, but SouthMain Auto on YouTube swears by Fluid Film in Western NY.

I love toyota's and I love 4runners, however they are not for me.

They do keep their value much more than other vehicles, however if you drive alot of miles per year the total cost of ownership is still worse given the really terrible fuel economy.

 

Depending on the year they can kind of be cramped inside. The inside of a a 4runner will not be as optimized as any of the unibody SUV's when it comes to a family of 4+, it is more cramped, less head space and storage room.

The ride is much rougher than most unibody SUV's and the acceleration kind of sucks balls(technical term).

 

They do have pro's though. If you need to go legitimate offroading they are extremely capable in some configurations, right up there with a jeep. Except they are  jeep that can haul around a family semi comfortably and reliably over years.

Also, they have an additional 1,500 pounds of towing capacity compared to any of the more comfortable SUV's.

South Main Auto is one of my favorites  Also NAPA (not a sponsor) lol
Pine Hollow ranks above South Main but not by much...

I was thinking any time after they changed the body style in 1996 and coined the “Tacoma” name. Was frame and driveline not updated until later?

$9k for my trade, $7k down....wheel & deal.......$23k out the door. Financed with DCU @ 6.7% for 65 months. Little over $425 a month.
