IGotWorms 3,831 Posted May 27 Hollywood expected “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” to scorch the box office over the holiday weekend. Instead, the big-budget Warner Bros. prequel iced it over. “Furiosa,” which cost $168 million to make, not including tens of millions of dollars in marketing costs, collected an estimated $25.6 million in the United States and Canada from Thursday night to Sunday. Box office analysts expected the film to take in about $5.4 million on Monday, for a holiday-weekend total of $31 million. That would be the worst Memorial Day weekend result in 43 years after adjusting for inflation — ever since “Bustin’ Loose,” a comedic drama starring Richard Pryor, collected $24 million in 1981. (Box office records exclude 2020, when most theaters were closed because of the coronavirus pandemic.) The franchise’s previous chapter, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” took in $45.4 million in 2015, or roughly $61 million in today’s dollars — and that was without the benefit of a holiday weekend. Gee, I don’t know, maybe come up with an original idea for a change?
EternalShinyAndChrome 3,184 Posted May 27 Everyone wanted a mad Max movie first. No one wanted a side character movie. I love the mad Max movies, but the next movie made should have been an actual mad Max movie. I'll still go see this one though.

Hardcore troubadour 13,732 Posted May 27 I was at the movies this weekend. Once again, almost every preview was for a remake or sequel or an offshoot of some other movie. Time to start boycotting the re-do’s. It’s played out. You would think they learned their lesson with the recent Toy Story movie.

The Real timschochet 4,780 Posted May 27 It’s gotten to the point where I can watch any movie at home within seemingly 30 days of its release. Why bother to go see anything? I don’t really understand why Hollywood is doing this.

MDC 6,480 Posted May 27 That’s too bad. Got good reviews and the original director George Miller has done all the Mad Max movies. He’s 79 years old. I’m sort of sick of reboots and sequels too but five MM films over 45 years is OK with me.

IGotWorms 3,831 Posted May 27 Some are saying Anya Taylor Joy can’t carry a movie at the box office. I suppose that could be it, but I feel like they simply misread the desire for an origin story/prequel type movie

I'll be a movie that took place after Fury Road and continued the story, not necessarily with the same exact characters, would have done pretty well. But these movies were never going to make giant BO anyway. As well liked as Fury Road was it only made $150M domestic and $225M international. Deadpool is going to do monster business. I'll be Inside Out 2 does well also.

They needed a sequel that was grander in scope and said something about the state of the world today. Not politically but philosophically

Sadly, I think Covid+streaming will eventually kill the big screen experience, but as long as they make movies like Furiosa, I will shell out my money to see them at the theater. Part of it is the volume, or lack thereof. The theaters aren't huge, the big comfy seats take up room, and they're never that full. And I saw Oppenheimer opening weekend. Plus they have a manual ordering process which is inefficient; they need electronic ordering like Red Robin has these days. It would pay off quickly in sales of that high margin beer. If and when a waiter sees it, they come grab it. The stuff comes out pretty quickly, it's the waiter seeing it part that can take a while.
