The Dan Jones era is over

Oh, he's not a good starter, but he's better than virtually every backup in the league.  Plus, he'll be cheap.  I honestly think Arizona would jump at the opportunity.  He's basically the same player that Kyler Murray is and if Murray were to get hurt, they wouldn't have to change their playbook at all and let's be honest, do you really think they'd rather go into a playoff run with Clayton Tune?  The Colts could be interested when Richardson proves that he still stinks.

There's also teams that while possibly in the market for a QB next year, they might not be in position to draft one.  From what I hear, there's only like 3 QB's in next years draft worth a 1st round pick... Sanders, Ewers, and Ward.  There are 9 teams right now with 3 wins or less, among them are Tennessee, Las Vegas, NY Giants, NY Jets, & Cleveland.  Two of them won't get a QB in next year's draft.  Obviously the Giants will look to the draft and have a great shot at a top 3 pick, leaving on 2 players for the other 4 teams.  There's even other teams where he'd definitely be a better back up like in Miami or every other team in the NFC West.

Why can't he be the next Sam Darnold or Baker Mayfield?  Personally, I don't think either are really all that good either, but both are playing well on teams that have a lot of talent on offense.

Like I said, you haven't watched him play much.  He's broken, he's mentally broken, he can't process, he has no confidence.  Maybe someone else can fix him but I doubt it.

NFL teams have proven that they don't care about that.  I have zero doubt that he gets signed soon.

As a Cards fan, this makes sense if they can get him cheap or for just the ROS.

I would disagree with your last paragraph tho.  Darnold and Mayfield were top talents when they were drafted; they were mostly just in sucky situations.  Jones was a reach where he was drafted.

This is very good news for young Daniel.

An observation from the Twitters:

The Giants also never gave Daniel Jones a complete offense to support him. They failed miserably at building an offensive line. When he had Barkley, his WR depth was severely lacking. They add Nabers, but lose Barkley.

Not saying Jones is good, but he's never had a good team.

He is absolutely horrible. He has no clue what he's doing out there.

Dwayne Haskins would probably be alive today if the Giants took him instead...

Not buying it.  He had plenty of chances. This year was the best team he's had as far as a competent line, a stud WR, several other good ones and some good RBs.  He's not him.

He takes to many sacks and soon as he see's pressure he curls up in a ball to the ground.

See that’s just not true. He’s plenty tough. That’s not his issue.

I wish I could let DJ know it’s gonna be alright. The mighty mush has spoken.

Saw his statement yesterday. DJ is a bad QB but seems high a high quality person. Good on the Giants for granting his release. I hope a team can turn his into a competent backup / spot starter given the right situation.

Schoen totally bot he’s the QB situation by declining DJ’s option year only to sign him for 4 years $160m. It’ll be interesting to see if the regime in NY survives.

They’re not looking as smart as everyone tells me they are.

He was drafted and resigned to make John Mara happy. He’s a stuck up blue blood nepo baby they just loved the thought of a QB from Duke. Fun fact: The Giants have spent a number one pick twice on a QB from the noted football powerhouse Duke.

I think the issue with him is that hes not overly talented and never was for such a high pick.  Yea he has legs.  But his arm, his accuracy, his playmaking ability; other than scrambles is all pretty average.  So he always had to be smart guy from Duke.  Film analyzer.  Very efficient.  But as a guy who started 3 years in college.  And now a handful of years in the league... he still doesnt seem to see the field well.

I do believe they did an awful job of building the team.  And who knows about coaching.  I think Daboll is a very good offensive mind.  But maybe I overrate him.  Probably a better OC than HC.  But mostly the decisions made upstairs seemed awful for such a stable franchise.  You would think the Bears staff was running that team.

Baker and Darnold were better prospects coming out of college.  But the comparisons are decent enough.  Im not saying he will look as good as Baker has.  But if he works hard and takes some time in a backup roll, there is no reason to think he couldnt develop into a low end starter.  Or a bridge type QB.  He has legs and he probably has some brains.  Work ethic.  If he can get with a coach to help him see the field a bit, who knows in a couple of years.  He is going to be a quality backup next season.  Will be interesting to see where he goes.

I’d love to see Dallas sign him and start him on Thanksgiving.

I get the sentiment about Jones being a reach, but that's stated a lot.  Sometimes it pans out to be true... Josh Rosen (to hit home), as an example.  Sometimes it's not... Bo Nix as an example.  Just because someone(s), sees a player as a "reach", it doesn't mean they're right.

Honestly the Bears is a perfect spot.  Caleb is the QB.  They will have some weapons.  Still no OL like Giants but they will probably emphasize that to the max in the offseason.  And you will probably get a good offensive coach in at HC.  Ben Johnson?

And the Bears will look to get rid of their backup who is causing problems in the lockeroom.  (Well perhaps just his dad)

Daniel Jones sucks but the bar is low. He’s definitely getting picked up somewhere and likely not as a backup, or at least not for long. Now whether he’ll hold that new job is a different question…

What would be a team next season that would be desperate enough to start him?   The Jets as a bridge QB maybe but doubtful.  Tennessee?  They may take a QB but if not why wouldnt you just roll another year with Levis?  Has more upside and has been with the team.  Raiders in all likelihood probably draft one you would think.  I cant think of a single other team that would make sense unless Matt Stafford retires.

Thats like 3 options and at least 2 will draft one high.  Then you got a guy like Fields, Winston? Out there.

The Colts are going to give up on Rchardson in order to sign Dan Jones and start him?  The cowboys?

Ehhh, lets just say I dont agree.

agree with most of this...

no o-line.. he had barkley and engram, who were both often injured, then waller... also injured and retired prematurely

them giving jones the big contract was surprising

Colts, maybe. Richardson is not good. Of course, neither is jones, but maybe you figure one of them pans out?

Cowboys, that would be more of a stopgap. Yeah they’re pretty much out of it this year but I don’t see Jerry wanting to full-on tank either.

The Colts are not parting ways with Richardson for Jones. Richardson has unlimited upside, Daniel Jones has none.

Jones belongs on a playoff caliber team, with an entrenched starter who has 100% job security, as an inexpensive emergency starter. Nobody wants him starting but he'll be around for years holding a clipboard. Teams appreciate the experience he's accrued. He'll pop up again in week seven, three years from now, after we all have lost track and mostly forget about him and get another shot to either finally impress, or fall on his ass again a second time.

He'd probably be the best backup instantly.

I'd take him as backup any day
