If Trump had carried out the tarrifs that he declared on Liberation Day for any significant period of time the world’s economy would have suffered the equivalent of a Great Depression. But very quickly he backed off from most of them. The ones he did impose have been painful and haven’t helped us at all. But @supermike80 is either ignorant of the facts or being disingenuous when he offers this commentary. Quote

That the entire world economy would collapse and we would be bartering instead of using currency. That was repeated over and over. WHA HAPPENED? Tarriffs are not something that would cause an immediate change to an economy. it takes time. a lot of the trade between america and Canada(as well as other countries) has contracts attached to it. so if its a 3 year deal to provide oil at $75 per barrel, the tarrifs wont change that. both sides have a contract to fulfill. its when the contract gets renewed that it will affect things. so any change to the economy that has been seen..... this is just the beginning. as these contracts for import and export expire, that is when we will find out how the tariffs have truly affected your economy. the biggest impacts so far has been agricultural and that has been a minor disaster for america(at least that's how it appears from our side). As a Canadian I can tell you a lot of the cancelled contracts for American agricultural goods have moved to Canada. its probably the only things positive that have come out of this in Canada. but I assure you we take no satisfaction in knowing we are benefitting while our neighbours farmers, auto workers and steel workers on both sides of the border are suffering. this tarriff thing. hurts us all. dogcows Posted April 17 Posted April 17 Get Your Refunds! https://www.cbsnews.com/news/how-to-file-for-tariff-refund/ Quote The U.S. government is set to launch an online portal next week that lets businesses request refunds for tariffs deemed illegal by the Supreme Court. But payouts won't be automatic, and legal experts said businesses could face other obstacles getting their money back. A federal agency, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), will boot up the portal — known as CAPE, for Consolidated Administration and Processing of Entries — so companies can submit claims for tariff refunds. CBP confirmed in a filing on Tuesday that CAPE will open for refund applications on April 20. The government could owe businesses up to $175 billion after the Supreme Court ruled in February that President Trump had illegally issued tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA. Since the landmark decision, companies have filed thousands of lawsuits with the Court of International Trade (CIT) seeking tariff refunds. How much of this refund money will find its way to actual American consumers? If it’s more than $0, I’d be shocked. Quote

This is sarcasm. I expect the boards of these companies to roll this into their profits, hook themselves up with larger bonuses more perks for themselves and blow each other about how they increased efficiency through AI or some other bullshit while they layoff people. Meanwhile Prez Bozo will talk about how perfect these were but he was foiled by two terrible judges and nothing was his fault. Quote
