what made this happen was the penalty for fair catch interference which brought them into the range of the kicker.   and with literally no time on the clock why not give it a try.  most times if you have time on the clock you would attempt to score the TD so this type of play usually only happens at the end of a half or end of a game.

in this case it happened at the end of the half with no time to run another play, so the fair catch free kick is actually a better option than doing a traditional field goal because there is no chance the kick gets blocked.
