Trump and Russia- the optimism is fading

OK this will be a different thread for me because I have been very negative about Donald Trump on most issues. This will, at least for now, not be one of them. And I hope for good things for the future. 

First off kudos to President Trump for the release of Mark Vogel. By all accounts Trump was the main guy here and deserves the credit. So good job! 

Next the Trump folks say this is the start of better relations between the USA and Russia. I would welcome that. I would like to see Trump bring about a peaceful end to the Ukraine war which does not weaken Ukraine’s sovereignty. Perhaps giving up Crimea permanently in exchange for allowing Ukraine to join NATO and the USA contributing to rebuilding the damage? I don’t know, I’m just spitballing. But I think that President Trump has the unique opportunity to get something done. 
 

If Trump’s solution is for Ukraine to surrender, if he continues to demand Ukraine gives up its natural resources to us in exchange for further aid, if he turns a blind eye on Putin’s crimes, then I go back to criticizing Trump on this issue. But for now I am optimistic and hopeful. Let’s go!

If we allow Ukraine into NATO it will guarantee WWIII 

Ukraine needs to stay as a buffer between NATO and Russia.  Think of it as a DMZ type of buffer zone.

Well I don’t want US troops in Ukraine so that doesn’t bother me. And the NATO thing was an idea. Anyhow what Hegseth says doesn’t matter. Trump is meeting with Putin and then we’ll know. I’m hoping for the best.

I think that for any lasting peace the U.S. is going to have to guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty in some fashion.

ARTICLE 5 of NATO

Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, NATO’s founding document, says that any attack on a NATO member in Europe or North America “shall be considered an attack against them all.”

 

If Ukraine is allowed into NATO it means that any conflict between Russia and Ukraine is an attack against ALL OF NATO!

You can't prosecute Putin for war crimes unless you overthrow the government of Russia. That's not going to happen. There will be no punishment for Putin, not in the criminal sense. You can sanction Russia after the war I guess for a certain period of time. This would be like George W Bush being brought before an international court for crimes during the Gulf War in Iraq. Didn't happen, never would.

I'm optimistic that after some fierce negotiating from President Trump, that all Ukraine will have to give up is Crimea and the Gulf of America will be renamed the Gulf of Putin.

Putin put troops in place the second after Biden took office. He NEVER would of even thought about it if Trump was in office, he even said as much. Had Biden been stronger from the beginning this never would of happened. He waited until Russia was well into their invasion before doing a damn thing.

Yes. Here’s why: it’s true that if Trump had his way Ukraine would just surrender- at the very least Trump doesn’t care. But Ukraine will not just surrender and still has the backing of the European Union. Meanwhile Trump wants more than anything else to come away looking like the big hero who engineered the peace, maybe a Nobel prize, etc. So I think Trump will push Putin to offer a deal that Zelenskyy can accept. That’s my hope, that’s why I’m still optimistic. We’ll see.

This is certainly possible. But it’s important to note that if Trump had won in 2020, we still would have pulled out of Afghanistan: it was in the works. And elsewhere Trump would have continued to pursue an isolationist agenda. So there is no reason to think that Putin wouldn’t have invaded anyhow. The difference is that if not for Biden’s reaction, Ukraine would have almost surely been quickly crushed. I can’t see Trump in 2022, as President, reacting the way Biden did. Can you?

Trump would have keep the communications with Russia open.  How Biden and the deep state handled it was asinine, just like virtually every war in the last 60 years was asinine.  Villify the enemy and don't negotiate. The war was easily preventable, just don't try to bring Ukraine into the UN.  1 million dead people and a trillion dollars later,  nothing was accomplished except the most corrupt people in the world lined their pockets with our childrens money.
