With Trump appearing to send the US economy over a cliff with his tariffs, it seems not a question of if, but when there will be a recession.

In this thread we can discuss the events leading up to this and the consequences once it hits.

Hope I am wrong on this but I kinda doubt it.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon says on Fox Business the U.S. economy is likely headed for a recession as a result of Trump’s tariffs.

Do you think it will get as bad as it was when Obama was President?

Obama inherited a bad economy. Under the circumstances he did pretty good (and the American people thought so too as he was reelected).

Obama and Bush did not want to see the economy collapse and worked hard to save it and Americans.

Trump doesn't care about crashing the economy and golfed all weekend while Americans were concerned.

This economy is technically easier to fix than the great recession.  The question is will Trump actually do it or will he continue his purposeful sabotage.

Trump inherited bad trade deals and is doing a great job to fix those.

I'm not placing blame on anyone.  I'm asking if will get as bad as that.  That time period was the worst economy I experienced as an adult.

Biden blamed all bad things on Trump for 4 years.  Trump has had less than 100 days to fix the disaster he inherited.  This is Biden’s economy still.  Own it.

Trump is the way and he will lead us to a Golden Age.  Patience.

"BE COOL! Everything is going to work out well. The USA will be bigger and better than ever before!"

- President Donald J Trump (this morning on a social media post)

😕

That is reminiscent of the quote attributed to Herbert Hoover as the US economy sank into the Great Depression of the 30's:

“Prosperity is just around the corner"

Technically he was correct, just took a lot longer than most wanted…. The same will probably happen here…

He negotiated some of those deals though.

Normally I'd give an incoming POTUS a grace period of 6-9 months in regards to "owning" the economy; but Trump was so intent on a Hundred Days blitz that he kind of negates that grace.  If he had sunset more Federal employees and gave a further out deadline for the tariffs (both to allow American businesses and other countries in line), his outlook would be much more rosy.

He owns any failures of this economy.  There's no real tie back to Biden....but to be fair, if it succeeds...none of the Dems can ride on his coat tails.  He would own the success as well.

The disaster he inherited?

If this wasn't such an important issue, it would be hilarious to point out how dumb someone must be to think the economy was bad in 2024, and how obvious it is that Trump focked it up in 2025. That's some serious copium, in this case it's so cultish that it's literally painful to the economy. Get a clue.

The disaster isn’t going to change, it’s not want those that are supported by voters want to have happen, why change, when voters keep saying yes.

Yeah, a way lot longer until 1939, although many historians say the Great Depression ended in 1941 due to WW2.

Have any of you clueless Trump haters checked the financial news today? Only the biggest gains in history with every nation in the world lining up against China with him.

Im amazed how stupid you all are.

Unless Trump caves on China too we will still have a recession. But I think he will cave. (He’ll call it a victory.)

The usual suspects here don't agree, they are already spinning not caving on China as a huge strategic victory on Trump's part (and, no I don't get that either).

I remember when posters here said during Biden that the stock market doing well wasn’t evidence of a good economy

So basically we are stuck getting the raw end of tariff deals and not having manufacturing in this country?  Is that the reality?

It was a question.   Do you believe there is no way to improve our tariff rates?  Bring some manufacturing to America?

I dont know about thr implementation of said tariffs.   But if these are frowned upon and thr immediate impact dictates what we can stomach....is it safe to say we can never have a better position?

I think there needs to be a gradual mindset shift amongst Americans in regards to their spending trends to be more frugal and to buy more American. That's an almost herculean thing to try and nurture normally and in todays political culture; an impossibility.  Nevermind the idea that that mindset often doesn't jibe with a bustling stock market; something that people have intricately tied (right or wrong) to the financial success of the country.

I think there will be a on/off with these tariffs for the foreseable future; with the one against China remaining fairly constant.  I think China has the ability to whether it better than we will and even if their citizens lose; they'll "win" (for lack of better words).  Then, the mid-terms will happen; the Republicans will get smoked and lose their Legislative Power. Then the tariff thing will be pretty much over.

I hope so too.

And I hope you can all mock me unmercifully for acting like Chicken Little when the prediction of a Trump recession doesn't happen.

Why?  Planning on retiring from Arby's in your 70s?   Just pocket some meats if you cant afford food, you don't have anything to worry about. Literally.

I'm predicting a little short term pain for long term gain. As long as the establishment doesn't fock it up.

Why not get out of the way and let Trump do what he's going to do? If it works, everybody wins. If not, the Dems shouldn't win easily in '28, right?

ETA: But to answer your question directly, no, I don't see a recession in the near future.

Well, this should make everyone feel better.

Trump acknowledged he could cause a recession, but just didn't want a depression, according to WSJ

KEY POINTS
  • President Donald Trump was aware the economy could enter a recession, but wanted to avoid a depression, from his tariffs, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
  • Kevin Hassett, director of the U.S. National Economic Council, told CNBC on Thursday that the collapsing bond market contributed to Trump's decision to walk back his trade policy.

A growing majority of America’s top executives now expects the U.S. economy to enter a recession in the near future, according to a survey released Monday.

Of the more than 300 CEOs polled in April, 62% said they forecasted a recession or other economic downturn in the next six months, according to Chief Executive, an industry group that runs the survey. That’s up from 48% who said the same in March.

Around three-fourths of CEOs surveyed said tariffs would hurt their businesses in 2025. About two-thirds said they did not support Trump’s proposed levies, many of which are currently on pause.
