posty Posted June 12, 2025 Posted June 12, 2025 https://www.on3.com/news/ncaa-hints-at-positive-momentum-towards-mens-basketball-moving-to-quarters-from-halves/ The NCAA revealed there’s been “positive momentum” toward the move to quarters, and the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel further recommended Division I conferences actually develop a working group to provide further feedback on the option. Men’s college basketball is the only division of the sport that utilizes halves as opposed to quarters. Women’s college basketball has utilized quarters since the 2015-16 season. “In considering the decisions last month, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee had conversations about ways to continue this direction in the upcoming years, which includes positive momentum for moving the men’s game from halves to quarters,” the NCAA’s press release Tuesday read. “The committee realizes there are hurdles to implementing the quarter format to the game, including the structuring of media timeouts to accommodate commercial inventory. “The committee recommended NCAA Division I conferences create a joint working group to provide feedback on the potential change from halves to quarters.” Quote
Mark Davis Posted June 12, 2025 Posted June 12, 2025 It would make for a better game IMO. They are going to need it given the PE money flowing into college sports and year to year free agency now. The loyalty that college teams have enjoyed will slowly erode if they don't find a better solution. To clarify, I think the main benefit is assessing the penalty. We have games where teams are in the bonus at 14 minutes or so. I think in the past there was a proposal to just reset the team fouls at the 10 minute mark but have the bonus start at 4 or 5 fouls. Mufaletta Posted June 12, 2025 Posted June 12, 2025 Yeck. Up Next: - limited passing, mostly 1 on 1 stuff with 8 guys standing around - token defense - uncontested dunks required - standing around on the opposite end of any breaks Then it can be NBA lite Quote
Strike Posted June 12, 2025 Posted June 12, 2025 I don't mind the halves as it is now, but it makes no sense. Isn't high school four 8 minute quarters? Then the pros are 4 12 minute quarters. But for some reason we decided to squeeze in a format of 2 20 minute halves for college. 4 10 minute quarters seems to make sense. Quote

Talk about wanting to dilute some games even more... Of course, it is a money grab... But if they did expand, would the NIT (32 teams), CBI (16 teams planned), and CBC (16 teams planned) still survive? Quote
jonnyutah Posted August 5, 2025 Posted August 5, 2025 No need to change. If they were truly concerned about exciting finishes, they would make it so the clock doesnt run after a made basket in last 30 seconds of the first half. Quote
