After last night's impressive win, I think he deserves his own thread as I am sure he will be making a lot of news duing the next four years.

New York City's new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, calls out Trump in victory speech

Voter turnout was highest the city has seen in decades

Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York on Tuesday, capping a stunning ascent for the 34-year-old democratic socialist, who promised to transform city government to restore power to the working class and fight back against a hostile Trump administration.

In a victory for the Democratic party’s progressive wing, Mamdani defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani must now navigate the unending demands of America’s biggest city and deliver on ambitious — skeptics say unrealistic — campaign promises.

With his commanding win, the democratic socialist will etch his place in history as the city’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. He will also become New York’s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on Jan. 1.

“The conventional wisdom would tell you that I am far from the perfect candidate. I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older. I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologize for any of this,” Mamdani declared to a roaring crowd at his victory party.

He cast his win as a boon for blue-collar workers struggling to get by. “New York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for change,” he said, vowing to ”wake up each morning with a singular purpose: To make this city better for you than it was the day before.”

He also addressed U.S. President Donald Trump head on.

“New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and as of tonight, led by an immigrant,” he said, adding that, “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.”

Trump appeared to acknowledge Mamdani’s challenges, posting ”…AND SO IT BEGINS!” on his Truth Social site.

More than 2 million New Yorkers cast ballots in the contest, the largest turnout in a mayoral race in more than 50 years, according to the city’s Board of Elections. With roughly 90 per cent of the votes counted, Mamdani held an approximately 9 percentage point lead over Cuomo. [...]

I was so impressed by Mamdani’s speech last night. Still don’t agree with many of his ideas but what a powerful speaker he is! Rooting for him, let’s see what he can do.

I believe in states rights.  I hope they get what they voted for.  Not sure where the issue is.

I am being sincere.  I hope the people of NY get what they voted for.  Do you want them to get something they didn't vote for?

There’s going to be a lot of bad hyperbole here with the Marxism & communism. NYPost has a hammer & sickle next to Z’s picture. But also the Republicans are totally right about reversing the policies which have energized NYC since the 1980s. I just see a populist reaction here, people rejecting Cuomo, Adams & Trump, & I’m expecting a lot of personality & media conflict with Trump. But *if he improves NYC & gains popularity in NYC itself then it could be a game changer for Dems. OTOH the last 2 mayors (one progressive, the other occasionally supported by maga) ended up being generally disliked & that could happen too.

Squissy decides what needs a thread or not. How many Trump threads are here. There is one thread over 400 pages and 16k replies and he saw fit to start a Trump world. Just run everything through him or he will throw a tantrum

Says the guy who started a duplicate Official Jack Smith Thread. 😂

And you specifically told me to quit posting in your MAGA "Father Trump" thread or there would be consequences (paraphrasing). You can't have it both ways, telling someone not to post in your Trump thread and then complaining when someone starts another thread to post Trump related news.

So was I. I don't think most Democrats are in agreement with much of his stated agenda...but when was the last time he saw anyone of the left who is this dynamic a speaker? Obama, I would guess.

Is there something wrong with people living in Mississippi? Is it the demographics? What’s is the put down? I don’t get it
