Engorgeous George Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Every year the last 5 years I have quit smoking for two months to clean out the lungs a bit. I always return to it primarily because of my use of other intoxicants which seem to pair well with smoking. This year I prepped by switching to vaping New Years day. Then, on Ground Hog's day at 10:30pm I put that down too. Basically 60 hours now and mean as a snake. I can't start back up until the day after April Fool's day. Who knows, maybe when that rolls around I will decide to keep going. Quote

I ffirmatively wrote the Bars I was admitted to and relinguished my licenses. I did not tell them why as it was a private matter, but I am no longer licensed to practice either in the two states in which I held a license nor in the Federal system. Quote

You can do it. Always appreciate your posts. There were.🫡 Quote

I quite for 5 years back in the 80's and for 2 years in the 90's. I always return though my intent those times was to not. During those times I would literally still be a smoker in my dreams. I get through the physical part consistently, but mentally, it is pretty pernicious. Quote

Fnord Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Well done, brother! Nicotine is a cruel, nasty mistress, but still preferable to my ex, who made such a habit of rebuffing it made smoking seem tame when comparing deleterious health effects. I have not smoked tobacco for several years, but still vape and use the newfangled non-tobacco pouches when vaping isn't an option. While we ultimately have no idea of the long term health effects of vaping, I've found it to be far more healthy feeling than smoking. At least I don't feel like absolute ass for three days after the fantasy draft anymore. I'm very sorry to hear about your diagnosis. That makes it more imperative for us to meet sometime in the not-too-distant future. If we manage to finagle it, I will arrive with a bottle of your favorite hooch and an adequate amount of powder to keep us both entertained and intoxicated for as long as we like. What part of CO do you live in again? Quote

Engorgeous George Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 I did notice the month of vaping seems to have accelerated the time frame for me to start hacking foulness up out of my lungs. Normally it takes maybe a week to 10 days for the cilia in there to come back to life and to start moving all the tar up and out. This year, with the new routine that seems to have happened nearly immediately. Quote
Engorgeous George Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 Off to the gym for the second time today. It is a no smoking zone obviously, so that helps, but it also offsets any munching I might be tempted to do. I don't want to gain weight while taking my time out. Quote

Engorgeous George Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 Super Bowl Sunday will be a gut check. Two hour road trip with a smoker to a place where there will be smokers (tobacco and pot) drinks, gambling (poker game in front of the ballgame on in the background) and plenty of peruvian marching powder. Those are powerful triggers for me. Of course as the driver I will have reason to stay sober. If I don't we will be stuck until morning, or beyond. Quote
Mike Honcho Posted February 6 Posted February 6 I started smoking when I was 16 and quit about 10 days after my 40th birthday---it can be done. The big thing after that first week is NEVER give in to that temptation for "I'll just have one", that was my downfall every time I backslid before. If I can quit, anyone can do it. Quote

Stopping has never been my difficulty. I have stopped for 5 years, 2 years, and 6 months a few times. Quitting is my problem as I start again from familiar triggers. Quote

I figure when I am on a bender, as I will inevitably be, that I can smoke a few cigars instead of cigarettes if I feel compelled to smoke something. I find I can put down cigars much easier than cigarettes and am less likely to take them up after I sober up. Of course any fooling around with tobacco is a pathway back to addiction. In the end I am a weak man when it comes to my vices. Quote

In the end I am a weak man when it comes to my vices. Wood tipped Black & Mild cigars were my go-to for a while after I finally gave up cigarettes. Eventually they gave way to the nicotine vape and Velo pouches. Now I can't even fathom smoking real tobacco, other than maybe a good cigar. The addiction is still there, and no doubt these synthetic nicotine products are unhealthy in some as-yet-undiscovered manner, but it costs less than cigs and doesn't feel nearly as crappy. I can pull on that vape all day and feel okay. Last night I sat in a garage playing cards with four smokers for about 4 hours, and I feel it today. Stuffed up sinuses, mild headache. And very stinky clothes. Quote
Engorgeous George Posted April 19 Author Posted April 19 Still doing without the smoking or any vaping. Doc ordered some chest imagining without contrast dye. (a once a year routine for smokers wholly unrelated to my cessation of which she knew nothing) No cancer, no emphysema, a few scars likely from past injuries. She found that hard to believe after 55 years of smoking. Good for me I suppose though no guarantee I have dodged the cancer bullet as it could still crop up. No plans right now either way as far as continuing or not. Just not doing so right now and I don't have the means to do so in my direct possession, though a store is only minutes away. 2 1 Quote
