The "cheese" stuff from the 80s was pretty darn awesome in my book in many cases. Cheesy is also completely subjective. Van Halen is beyond cornball to me, others think not so much Quote
Voltaire Posted March 5 Posted March 5 4.2 Guns 'n Roses - Paradise City If I'm taking Guns and Roses, I'm taking the song I like best. Quote
Gepetto Posted March 6 Posted March 6 I updated my round 3 and 4 picks (toward the bottom of page 5 in this thread) to show the videos. 1 Quote

jerryskids Posted March 6 Posted March 6 Backstory on my pick: In college as a freshman in 1985 I wasted far too much time playing pool, and in our house tournament, I faced my good friend John. John was into cheesy music, whereas at the time I was a music snob errrr.... afficionado. I was two simple shots away from beating him when he said "hold on a sec," ran up to his room, and came down with his boom box. He turned it on and for whatever reason it flustered me. I missed the first easy shot and he went on to win. I've since come to really like it, and look fondly back on that time. Continuing my ghey theme started with Queen, I select: Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax 1 Quote

Gepetto Posted March 6 Posted March 6 So if a song is definitely 80s but didn't make the top 40 on the US chart we aren't allowed to choose it? Quote
BiffTannen Posted March 6 Author Posted March 6 1 minute ago, Gepetto said: So if a song is definitely 80s but didn't make the top 40 on the US chart we aren't allowed to choose it? No, you can choose whatever you want. I just didn't know what else to name the draft for what I was looking for. 1 Quote

Bro you are doing awesome and if others want to change the narrative fock them and yea has to be top 40 on US charts. It's a Pop Rock Draft! But yea as long as it's top 40 all good. Sorry not talking for Biff there but my opinion. 1 Quote

Meh, it started out as 80's cheese. Which is why I Rick Rolled you all in round one. Biff just wanted a non hair, non country, non metal draft. I don't think it needs to have been on the charts. There is so many great pop songs from this era the 80's and think that is what Biff wanted. A lot don't like it or thinking outside the box for a angle. Quote

Biff just confirmed it doesn't have to have made the top 40 as long as it's a typical 80s song. Quote

Synth-Pop & New Wave: Characterized by heavy synthesizer use, electronic beats, and polished pop sensibilities I'm just saying, not every song like this made it as high as the top 40. So if a song would qualify for top 40 in the 1980s Casey Kasem style but only reached #86 or #47 or #103 it shouldn't be eliminated. 1 Quote

Fnord Posted March 6 Posted March 6 Well since @BiffTannen clarified that actually charting on the top 40 isn't required, I'll go with a quintessential 80s classic that somehow never made it's way to the top 40. Depeche Mode Just Can't Get Enough Quote

I remember insisting we watch this with some buddies one night. An hour in, they were like "this movie sucks but at least Melanie Griffith is naked!" I said, just keep watching. By the end everyone loved the flick. And Melanie's bewbs. 1 Quote
Fumbleweed Posted March 6 Posted March 6 One thing I am really enjoying about this draft so far is that each of us has a different interpretation of the 80s. If you grew up in the heartland, mainstream might look different than if you grew up in a large city or suburban area. I would want all of our playlists to look pretty different. Some, like Voltaire, are putting together a playlist with some metal in it. Others are using songs that were alternative at best for me as a teenager in North Louisiana. Whatever the case, the 80s meant something different to each of us and I like that Biff is extending the freedom to recognize that. I am just drafting songs that feel like defining songs for me and I consider to be 80s staples. 3 Quote

My ex kinda put a damper on my love of 80s music because she never gets sick of songs and listened to Sirius 80s constantly. I discovered during my itunes phase that I'm over most songs after hearing them about 50 times. So I'm tired of hearing the biggest hits. That's why I'm concentrating more on songs that weren't huge hits, but hopefully still recognizable. Quote

I think most of us are the same age-ish. So these songs are all hitting the nostalgia buttons hard. I asked my 40 year old co-worker the other day and he had never heard a couple of my songs I was weighing. What a dlck 3 Quote

Heard a song on the radio with Graham Bonnet singing first and then checked them out . I discovered Dio, before hearing him in Rainbow he was just a character to me. I’ve been going down a rabbit hole of stuff I never listened to as a kid/teen. Quote
