Why are you drilling down? It’s simple, only citizens are allowed to vote. If that’s the law, and it is, conforming citizenship is completely logical. Why do you resist it?

I’m fine with it. I’m in a state where that’s the law & Real ID is supposedly required. I just think it’s amusing that one of the first issues in discussing this is what happens if DC issues a card to someone & the county doesn’t have them as a resident. It’s going to happen, & it’s entirely foreseeable a leftist comes in and declares amnesty or something similar. There’s no plan B, & you know as well as I do that Louisiana, Florida & a whole bunch of other states will lose their collective shlt.

Why do you keep bringing up residency, it has nothing to do with the subject at hand

Not at all. Let’s poll them and see what they think of the Save Act.

By all means, go right ahead, make sure to include in the poll you think they are too dumb to apply for a BC if they don't already have one and make sure to let them know that it is harder for Black/Brown people to obtain one than it is for a White/Yellow/Green person.  Also Also, make sure to let them know that you know what's best for them, that will help your survey.

It would seem CNN agrees, they did a survey

It’s not a matter of intelligence. It’s a matter of poverty and burden. For poor people, and this includes a lot of minorities, it’s an economic burden to force them to obtain original copies of birth certificates. A lot of them won’t bother if the only reason to do it is to be able to vote. They simply won’t bother to register. Which is the whole point. You guys want less of these folks to vote. You claim that it’s to prevent fraud but statistically that’s a non-issue. Thats why the Save Act will never pass because people see through your bullsh!t.

Simple voter ID, requiring only a DL, might pass. I think it’s pointless but the public seems to like it. So stick with that idea. The Save Act is crap.

Ok. As long as only citizens get a DL. You good with that?

No. But I wouldn’t mind it if we stamped non-citizen DLs as “non-citizen” so they couldn’t use it to vote. I’d be fine with that.

Once again you know best and you know what 'You guys want', get over yourself. I can only speak for myself, I want safeguards in place to insure US Citizens are  voting in Fed elections.  Also, it's insulting to infer Black/Brown/poor people can't easily get a copy of their BC, they can.

let us know the results of your completely unbiased poll once it's completed

Because your precinct is where you vote, for everything, & your residency determines your precinct & whether you can vote. And this law would take the power out of the hands of your local registrar & put it in the hands of a faceless bureaucrat in DC, which is fine & dandy I’m sure if it’s a maga Republican but just consider for a nanosecond if it’s a leftist.

If a Republican voter tells you the SAVE act is just about election integrity then they are either lying or ignorant of what’s actually in the law.

Fraudulent votes are more rare than people getting hit by lightning.

There is no actual problem to be solved. It’s simply an excuse to keep changing voting rules to make it easier for their likely voters and harder for likely Democratic voters. Plus, this SAVE act goes way beyond voting and into mass government surveillance. I could have sworn that Republican voters believed in less government intrusion into our lives. Maybe I was wrong on that?

It’s not the ID you & I use to vote (or fish, etc). You’ll need a Passport or a new ID card.

What ID do I need to get to vote?

I even have a TWIC card for God's sake.

Well I was replying to someone who said they did in Fla. Whst state are you in? Just curious. I’ve been showing my DL for years in LA.

I don't want to impede brown or black people, but I'm happy to impede poor people, who should not have a say in spending other peoples' tax money on themselves.  And I'm particularly happy to impede people who are too uninterested to spend a little effort to get an ID.

The fact that something disproportionately impacts POC, because they are disproportionately poorer, does not in and of itself make it racist.  It makes it poorist, which in the context of voting, I am one.

John Adams said it nearly perfectly in 1776 -- take out the parts about women and whites, and there is little you can intelligently argue about the following:

Quote

May 26, 1776

It is certain in theory, that the only moral foundation of government is the [agreement] of the people, but to what an extent shall we carry this principle? Shall we say, that every individual of the community, old and young, male and female, as well as rich and poor, must [agree] to every act of legislation?...

Is it not equally true, that men in general in every society, who [are poor and do not own property], are also [unfamiliar] with public affairs to form a right judgment, and too dependent upon other men to have a will of their own? …Few men, who have no property, have any judgment of their own. They talk and vote as they are directed by some man of property, who has attached their minds to his interest.

Depend upon it, sir, it is dangerous to open [such a] source of controversy and altercation, as would be opened by attempting to [change] the qualifications of voters. There will be no end of it. New claims will arise. Women will demand a vote. Lads from 12 to 21 will think their rights not enough attended to, and every man, who has not a [dime], will demand an equal voice with any other in all acts of state. It tends to confound and destroy all distinctions, and [surrender] all ranks, to one common level.

Obviously, things have changed, like the 14th amendment which allowed former slaves to vote, and the 19th allowing women to vote, and it's not practical to limit it to property owners only.  But the basic premise is sound.

After you and/or other Lefties call me racist and other names, I'd appreciate if you could give me an argument of why a person who contributes nothing in taxes should be able vote for how other peoples' money is spent, and vote for people who promise to give them free stuff from other peoples' money.

They are having a really hard time with this one. Libs might not even consciously realize that they indeed want illegals to vote.

If the proof of citizenship requirement passed now, everyone who doesn't have it now has plenty of time to get it.

I haven’t called you a racist. I don’t think you are one.
I’m scared of ignorant voters myself. I hate populism. Donald Trump is a fine example of what happens when ignorance has its way.

But that’s our system and I don’t think there is a better one. We’ve had 250 years of ignorant voting. I’m sure John Adams would have been horrified by the elections of Andrew Jackson and Donald Trump. But we’ve survived. I’m not afraid, as you appear to be, of people voting.

Thanks for the response.  "It's our system" is somewhat fatalistic.  We have ways of changing the system.

Perhaps you can answer my question?

Well Donald Trump hasn’t paid taxes in decades- are you proposing taking away his ability to vote?

OK for a more serious answer: everyone who spends money in this country (and that means everyone in this country)  contributes to this countries well being and if they are citizens have the right to vote. Thats the way it should be. It’s the best system ever developed IMO.

And by the way, while John Adams did fear a wide electorate, Thomas Jefferson did not, and neither did James Madison.
In the Federalist Papers Madison argued that the more people vote the less chance of corruption.

You're right, it probably won't. That's why an EO will happen under national security. Suck it. You lose. Only citizens will vote.

Interesting.  So a person who has never worked, and gets entitlement money to survive, by virtue of spending that money, should have a say in how much more money he gets?

I appreciate the answers btw.  Jefferson was a bit of an odd duck -- a genius who, like many other geniuses I've encountered, struggled to empathize with the fact that everyone around them wasn't a genius.  He proposed that we should tear up the Constitution every 19 years and write a new one, since he didn't think past generations should dictate to future generations how to run the country.  He certainly didn't envision ballot harvesting from homeless people as a means of running the country.

I'd be interested in your quote of Madison if you have it; not that I doubt you, but I'd like to read it.  I would guess that his fear was that an oligopoly of super-powerful would make the choices (maybe like the Dems and super delegates?), not the above ballot harvesting scenario.
