Florida Democrats Win Special Election in Mar-a-Lago’s District

Democrats on Tuesday flipped a Florida legislative district that includes President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, pulling off another upset in a state house election but this time one with obvious symbolic power.

Emily Gregory, a first-time candidate with a public health background, became the latest Democrat to win a special election and claim a statehouse seat previously held by a Republican.

Since the 2024 presidential election, Democrats have flipped more than two dozen seats in Republican or battleground states — including ones in Arkansas and New Hampshire earlier this month — while the Republicans have not captured any Democratic seats.

Republican strategists have framed the losses as a natural regression following big gains in 2024 in Washington, D.C., and in state capitals across the country.

But Democrats see in the results a mounting anger in the electorate over Mr. Trump that could carry through November and the midterm elections. Ms. Gregory’s victory brought the trend into Mr. Trump’s backyard, in a state that has trended heavily Republican since its days as a perennial battleground.

“Floridians are tired of the chaos, corruption, and sky high prices on everything from groceries, to gas, and health care,” Nikki Fried, the chairwoman of the Florida Democratic Party, said in a statement. “They are voting for trusted leaders like Emily to steady the ship and return common sense, people-centered solutions back to our communities.”

A Democratic presidential candidate has not won Florida’s electoral votes since 2012, but this year, Florida has not been immune from the Democratic surge. Boca Raton, about 30 miles down the Atlantic coast from Palm Beach, elected its first Democratic mayor in 45 years earlier this month. That margin was narrow, but Miami voters in December overwhelmingly elected their first Democratic mayor in 30 years.

Palm Beach County, where Ms. Gregory scored her victory, used to be a Democratic stronghold, but Republicans have made major inroads in recent federal and local elections. The seat that Ms. Gregory won — District 87, along coastal Palm Beach County — had been held by State Representative Mike Caruso, a Republican, who won by 19 percentage points in 2024. [...]

All polling would indicate people voted Trump in because of high prices and now they are voting out the GOP in areas because the prices are still too high (and in some cases higher)

It’s amusing to think of the Maralago country club manager having to call this state rep for special zoning favors. The DNC should put some money into the Palm Beach County council too.

Google search?  It’s 6 am I just woke up and saw this and typed it off the top of my head. But again. And I have said I will never ever vote democrat. But other than that policy and beliefs are as close to middle of the road as anyone here

The fact that we don’t have a democracy is what seems to be overlooked. A constitutional republic is the best form of government the world has seen. It’s far from perfect. but it’s what we have. Democracy is idiotic on the surface. The will of the majority shall not impose on the minority. Two wolves and a sheep voting what’s for dinner is democracy.

I don’t think the government does anything good. Not democrats or republicans. So why would I want them to have more power? People here want federalized healthcare but probably didn’t watch their dad die cause of the VA

My favorite uncle and FIL, both deceased, were victims of VA negligence. I get it. I support some kind of federal healthcare because for-profit healthcare is, to me, an oxymoron.

Based on your feelings about this, wouldn't you be against the SAVE act, since it centralizes controls over voting within the federal government?

I am for and against it simultaneously

I dont think the federal government should have say on state elections, but since the affect they federal level I am for it, if that makes sense

also I am for requiring ID to register and vote, so on policy I agree with the SAVE act

and when you live in california with no common sense that has jurisdictions that allow illegals to vote and allow sanctuary cities (immigration falls under federal jurisdiction) which increases its electoral and house powers, I am all for knocking that sh1t off and federalizing it

Peope on the Right and the Left think that they're the when it comes to politics.  The reality is, it's us in The Middle that decides elections.  The Middle broke for Trump in 16 because they didn't like Clinton and had suffered economically under Obama.  The Middle broke for the Democrats in 18 because Trump was an a-hole.  The Middle broke for Biden in 20 because Trump was an a-hole and COVID and all the crappy economic things that came out of it happened under his watch*.   The Middle broke for Trump in 24 because Biden made Mr. Burns from The Simpsons look like The Liver King and people were feeling the economic pinch of post COVID marketplaces.  The Middle is going to break against Trump in 26 because he's an a-hole and he has not delivered on his economic promises.  One of those promises was "Day One". Trump supporters feel like he should be immune from this because he spews SO much B.S. but ALL politicans shouldn't promise if they can't deliver.  The Middle doesn't forget that.

 

* For the record and to be fair to Trump...the middle would have broken for Trump in 20 if it weren't for COVID.  The economy was humming so much that The Middle was willing to overlook that he was an a-hole.
