Guy had a very nice season after he looking so-so as a rookie.

Caleb Williams wasn't initially the biggest fan of the "Iceman" nickname bestowed upon him, but after warming to it, the Chicago Bears quarterback moved to protect his business interests and public image by trademarking the pseudonym

Gervin's business managers said they wrongly believed he already held an "Iceman" trademark. Once Williams' application came to light, they contacted the United States Patent and Trademark Office to seek protection for "Iceman" and "Iceman 44."

Are people really calling him Iceman? And why can't he just embrace a nickname? Why the need to trademark it? As well as he may have played, he still acts clownish.

Maybe he can trademark Nail Polish Man?

Iceman = George Gervin

that's what the article is also about. Gervin found out about Caleb trying to trademark it and is attempting to block that with trademarks of his own.

Shouldn't Val Kilmer's people get in on this?

Dumb and no trademark should be allowed. There are some nicknames which are so common they belong, essentially, to all of us to bestow on new folks all the time, nicknames like Cosmo, Doc, Iceman, Dude, Hoss, Frizz, and Sweet D!ck.

Yeah, Williams should not be able to trademark it...

was he on the artemis spaceship?

i know i read that here already

Isn't there a superhero (or villain) named Iceman?  Hard to believe some company like Marvell or DC didn't trademark it already.

Also, George Gervin wore 44 so not sure why he wants to trademark Iceman 44.

One of the original X-Men. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

It is trademarked but trademarks are specific to industries. So my understanding is that if an NFL or NBA player wants to brand himself as Iceman or Spider-Man Marvel can’t stop it.

Agreed. Honestly most nicknames.     maybe some like Broadway Joe, Black Mamba etc...  but like Joe Mantana was Joe Cool right? and Joe Burrow is called that now

The Kid is solid but he needs to do something before I refer to him as "Iceman".

And you can't give yourself a nickname.

doesn't sound like he did, just sounds like hes trying to profit off it. though i cant honestly say I ever heard of this being a thing before seeing the article

Kobe ripped off Kill Bill for black mamba, so his estate should pay the production company a licensing fee

a black mamba is a real snake, so even though Kobe was inspired by the movie, it's hard to say he ripped off Kill Bill. Not like Kill Bill created some fictional creature.

I remember an interview where he ripped the entire black mamba explainer straight from the script

His year last year is overrated.  Maybe he can pull off a bunch of mircle 4th quarters over and over.  But I wouldnt hang my hat on it.

Went backwards 4% completion for an awful 58%.

Beat the packers twice.

And now do.his other stats from his second vs. first year.

Talk about blaming the QB for everything and not giving him credit for what he pulled off to help the Bears win.

The best QB he was above in completion % is a total toss up.  Davis Mills, Russ, Jameis.   Guys ahead of him, Dillon Gabriel, Cam Ward.  Jacoby Brissett was 64%.

He has lucked out with a really good coach and tons of weapons so he will probably be alright.

Is it possible that he's just a really good QB?

After all, he was a 5 star recruit and undisputed #1 overall pick.

Im not saying hes a bust.  But man oh man did people slob his knob like he had the greatest season ever.  They made a ton of comrbacks, credit them for scrambling in 4th quarters after not doing much for 3 of them.  We all picked on KC 2 years ago saying their 1 loss season was fluky, and what do you know thr next season they didnt win all of their 1 score games and didnt make playoffs.

Is it possible to say he seems like he will be good but lets pump the breaks.  He made some super throws no doubt, that was his MO coming out, he can make the spectacular throw.  But also 58%.

Like I said he will be fine.  Has one of the better offensive coaches, the most coveted coach to be available of recent years.  A skilled young TE.  Burden looks solid.  Odunze looks good.  They are stacked.  A game manager could make that offense work.  So he should be fine.

I don't think he will be fine.

  1. He basically had the Jayden Daniels season where he had a bunch of horseshoes fall out of his ass all season.  horseshoes dried up and they came right back down to earth
  2. Guy with a diva complex spending all off season with everyone blowing smoke up his ass is a recipe for disaster

He does have Ben Johnson though.  He seems legit.  Maybe he'll keep Caleb from jamming his head all the way up his own ass.

difference between Williams situation and Daniels right now is  1. the head coach,  2. the offensive weapons placed around them.

Ben Johnson + Moore/Odunze/Burden/Loveland/Swift/Monongai   >>>   Quinn + McLaurin/Samuel/Ertz/JCM

yes, I know Moore is now gone but the Bears young offensive core is better than what the commies are currently working with.

i'd still take a healthy Jayden Daniels at this point.

Fine is subjective.  Personality aside, he has plenty of ability with a top offensove coach.  It would take a lot of personality to F that up with the skills he does have.

As a Bears hater, I will still have to say it was year 1 with the two together.  With the cap they have their roster should keep getting stronger overall.  Obviously to my point, you cant rely on comebacks each year, but as a team they could turn around having to do so.

I will put this here though.

The Bears led the NFL in turnover differential this year but had a point differential of + 26.
That's the lowest for the league leader since at least 2006.
Average +/- of the league leader in turnover differential was +146 over that time.

Jesus Christ people, he's just going into year 3. He's had 3 different head coaches and played in 3 different systems.

Let's talk about Justin Herbert for a minute.

Justin Herbert has a 0–3 record in the NFL playoffs, having lost all three of his postseason starts in the Wild Card round (2022, 2024, 2025 seasons). In these games, he has completed 58 of 106 passes (54.7%) for 674 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions.

Don't forget williams had 4 different OCs in 2 years. The offensive line completely changed from year 1 to year 2. New receivers, new TE.

Then he has 7 4th quarter game winning drives last season and gets criticized by people saying he was "lucky".

And where is all the Jayden Daniels and CJ Stroud slobbering praise this past year? A year ago it was"The Bears blew it by not taking Daniels."

Daniels can't take a hit, and he can't avoid getting hit.

I am not going to bash him because despite what I thought about his chances in the nfl he has been good and they seem to be willing to build around him. I really dont think people call him the iceman. I had never even heard about it as a lions fan and I am sure they would have made a big deal out of that twice a year. But also you should not be able to take a living persons nickname and make money off it. Gerving was the iceman when Calebs parents were kids. If he wants that name they should come to an agreement where caleb uses it but gives a percentage to gervin for any merch sold with that name on it. They both win and williams comes off as willing to help an old head.

the article claimed it was fans giving him the nickname and he embraced it. would be hilarious if he gave it to himself and pretended it was the fans

to L2M's point, everyone gave the Chiefs shiit for all their close wins and we saw last year that it was not sustainable.

it's a topic about Caleb Williams not Justin Herbert. The board has collectively given Herbert and the team of the decade their fair share of shiit.

also the topic was supposed to be about the nickname thing more so than his play or development.
