SaintsInDome2006 Posted May 8 Posted May 8 Right, on Living Color. & Dumb & Dumber. And Ace Ventura. His standup was good too. Long long time ago. Quote
Mungwater Posted May 8 Author Posted May 8 Even dumb and dumber sucked, so at best a mediocre funny guy from 30 years ago, why do people still try to imitate him? Borat is next Quote
BiffTannen Posted May 8 Posted May 8 I thought he was funny in the 90s. His comedy did not age well. Quote
WhiteWonder Posted May 8 Posted May 8 Dumb and dumber definitely did not suck. The argument against Carey would be that it wasn't his movie he carried. I think maybe the first Ace Ventura is about it. Jeff Daniels was the far superior actor and not to say he had a bad career but it is weird how much more hype Carey got. Quote

I always thought it was interesting that the most talented guy on a mostly black comedy show was the token white guy, and ultimately the most successful person was fly girl Jennifer Lopez. 1 Quote
supermike80 Posted May 9 Posted May 9 He was ok. Never laugh out loud, but funnyish. The mask was good Loved him in eternal sunshine Quote
TimHauck Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Liar Liar Me Myself and Irene Grinch Bruce Almighty Yes Man Sonic Movies were all decent IMO Quote
BeenHereBefore Posted May 9 Posted May 9 I liked him doing Andy Kaufman in Man on The Moon and Dumb And Dumber was cool but yea not a huge fan of him being funny and some of his movies were down right annoying with his mugging to the camera. I do like he had enough of Hollywood and tries to expose them. Quote

frank Posted May 9 Posted May 9 No, but the title of this thread should have been “Let me ass you a question.” Quote

kilroy69 Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Me myself and irene is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Quote
Voltaire Posted May 9 Posted May 9 At the very end of the Gulf War, just in the day or three before we went home, I saw "In Living Color" for the first time. We watched back-to-back-to-back-to-back episodes for hours on end. Just binge watching "In Living Color". And they were hilarious. The cast and the writing was over-the-top great. But who was that ridiculous goofy-looking white guy? My God, he was particularly insanely, hysterically, side-splitting funny. Quote

The very same Jim Carrey this thread is about. Quote
Frozenbeernuts Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Dumb and dumber is hilarious. I still laugh when I watch it. His performance makes the entire movie. Liar Liar is solid. Ace Ventura is still decent. The mask is dumb now a days. Those are the only movies he has made so it's a small sample size to go from. Quote
cyclone24 Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Id say absolutely. His issue comedically is when your act is always off the wall extreme overacting you dont really have anywhere else to take that. You cant get MORE off the wall…but id definitely say yes he was at the time. in 20 years we will ask the same question of Will Ferrell. Quote
lickin_starfish Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Jim Carrey was far funnier than Adam Sandler. This cannot be disputed. 1 Quote
Herbivore Posted May 9 Posted May 9 this is silly. he was funny, someone paid him millions to be funny, and they kept doing it cause it was worth it. curiousity, is there a 90s comedy actor you like? Quote

GobbleDog Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Odd style of humor for sure, and I totally get why people don't dig it. I do, to some extent. First time I saw Ace Ventura ... I laughed my ass off. I was probably stoned and didn't know much about Carey (wasn't a Living Colored fan), but thought it was hilarious. Admittedly, doesn't hold up too well today. Though the slow-mo football in rewind will never not make me laugh. I think the follow up Ace Ventura II was actually superior and holds up better. Dumb and Dumber - Carey was fantastic. But I'll go to my grave saying they screwed up casting Jeff Daniels as the side-kick. There's a fine line between funny and stupid... Daniels just comes off as stupid. Cringe stupid. Apparently the producers agreed and really wanted someone else, but Carey demanded it be Daniels. It'd be a classic if it weren't for Daniels ruining the movie. Cable Guy was sorta funny. Not a classic, not terrible, just ok. Truman Show was really good, but not exactly a Carey "comedy." Can't think of anything else I've seen him in. Quote
easilyscan Posted May 9 Posted May 9 I always liked him, but figured the jig was about up when he starred in some movie about a man who was obsessed with a certain number. Similar to TDS sufferers of today. Quote

Hawkeye21 Posted May 11 Posted May 11 Absolutely. Both Ace Ventura movies Me, Myself and Irene Liar, Liar Bruce Almighty Once Bitten Quote
