this started in the late 90s. Instead of sticking with the equal number of cards, and those of good players being worth more? They started doing pack inserts at odds of 1-in-a-1000. Legal gambling for kids. It’s only gotten worse over time.

Late 90s was when I got out of card collecting, and it was a thing before that. Probably 92 or 93. I remember getting one pack that was entirely inserts.

I actually got a few autographed inserts in the early 2000s when I'd pick up packs at gas stations. Unfortunately, they weren't superstars.

I only showed the video to demonstrate how over-the-top it's become.

A focking briefcase with cards inside priced at 25K.  Pokémon cards are even worse. Grown men fighting in stores to get at the limited amount released, or paying off employees to hold them, etc

I bought an entire case of 1991 upper deck football hoping I'd find one of the special Lombardi trophy holograms. Fail :)

I got out in 91 or 92… I was thinking of getting back in a few years later… but I saw what it had become. I think the other posters are right too. It was starting to happen even in the early 90s…

I remember the early chase insert days.  1992 Fleer Rookie Sensations, 1992 Team Pinnacle, 1992-93 Beam Team; 1992 Donruss when the Diamond Kings turned into chase cards instead of being part of the regular set.  Those Team Pinnacle in 1992 were beautiful cards.  I have a PSA set of those still.

I miss the days when you could pick up packs of cards at almost every gas station.

this is so ghey. I mean, there are idiots out there who will buy the contents of the box, I guess... im not disputing that cards trade like stocks... but the fact you can just dish out 25 grand for a stupid looking gimmick that is guaranteed to have some expensive cards inside is dumb.

it was okay back when it was just hoping to get lucky opening some packs. it's become too elitist I think.

"its a 1 of 1, its a superfractor 🤓"   they just keep making up terms for the foil on the card. stupid.

I checked out ebay to see if any of the cards he pulled are up for sale.

Reggie Jackson no comp but a Pudge Rodriguez superfractor 1/1 is $1,200 obo. The Skenes is 20k obo. Not sure where Reggie would fall. 5k is probably generous.
Turner no exact but auto patch going for $200 obo. I'd think the plain auto would be less.
Roki Sasaki same exact card asking $600 obo
Ben Rice comp 1,500 obo
Aaron Nola no comp but I don't think thats even worth $100 based on similar cards
Kyle Tucker same exact card currently $12 as a bid with 5 days left
James Wood same exact card asking $5,000 obo
Gunner Henderson $500 obo

The Tatis Auto from the pack  same card $175 obo

Ohtani throwback same card 35K obo
Josh Jung same card  $51 as a bid with 8 hours left

So without that Ohtani hit, you're talking like $13,500 max if everything sold for ebay asking prices, not counting best offers accepted and fees paid to ebay. You'd be pissed if you spent 25K and didn't hit that Ohtani card or something similar.

Maybe they HAVE to include one crazy card like that? or more of the James Wood type cards?

Hell yeah!

Those were beautiful cards.

I tried to put a set together, but never did. The only one I still have is a gem mint Barry Sanders, but it's graded by a company that's no longer around.

Edit: I was thinking of a different set, 1993 pinnacle trophy card inserts.

Here's the one I was referring to.

no problem. it all fascinates me even if I think it's become stupid.

and i will admit, something I have wanted to do but never got around to was buying a rookie auto of a less heralded player and seeing if that player pops and becomes a perennial all star.

That's called gambling :)

I did something similar with a Minnesota twins pitcher named Kevin Tapani sometime in the 90s, bought 150 of his upper deck rookie cards. Didn't work out....lol

yup, thats why it intrigues me. I guess I don't mean totally obscure but also not immediately sought after. As a Rays fan, Junior Caminero comes to mind. I'm not sure his 2023 rookie card would have been highly priced in 2023, but as a fan I should have looked for 1  rookie auto psa10 for giggles.

Solid pitcher, nice guy, though not a superstar.
