Fouls happen when you go for the ball, miss, and take out the other player. I guess there's another rule that says you can't raise your foot up that high and make contact under any circumstance. The one guy kicks the ball while the other misses the ball and headbutts his foot. Quote

Voltaire Posted July 14 Posted July 14 Men are bigger, stronger and faster, but I don't know that we have any better eyesight than women. Seems to me good eyesight and knowledge of the rulebook are all you need to umpire baseball. In football, basketball, hockey or soccer, you have to be able to run up and down the field with them but baseball umpires are pretty stationary. I see no reason that women shouldn't be able to umpire baseball effectivly. It looks like they just found a bad one. Maybe there's some capable ones percolating in the system. Quote

Now, the contact that was made here was initiated by the headbutter who got to the ball late. How about if no contact was made, meaning the guy raised his foot and kicked the ball at head level, like this one did, yet nobody ran into him? Is it still a dangerous play and a foul? Quote

Voltaire Posted July 14 Posted July 14 Germany’s Dangerous Play Controversy in World Cup 2026 The incident you’re referring to happened in Germany’s group-stage match against Ecuador at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 25, 2026. In the early minutes, Germany took the lead from a throw-in. Midfielder Aleksandar Pavlović lifted his leg high to play a high ball, and the boot appeared to be in line with Ecuador midfielder Pedro Vite’s face, with some replays suggesting contact Yahoo Sports. The on-field referee allowed play to continue, and the goal stood. VAR reviewed the incident but did not overturn the decision, citing that the contact was brief and that the opponent was not in a “playing safely” position at the time ourvar.ai. Under Law 12 (Dangerous play), such a foul is only an offence if the opponent is playing safely, which VAR determined was not the case here ourvar.ai. Ecuador players and fans were furious, arguing with the referee, but the VAR team concluded there was no clear and obvious error to justify disallowing the goal Yahoo Sports+1. This controversial non-call became a talking point in the match, which Ecuador eventually won 2-1 in extra time to advance Yahoo Sports. ----- Ther's a carveout for not "playing safe" whatever that means. I've always heard that men's vision is evolved to detect movement much moreso than women, going back to our days as hunters. Seems like it could apply here, it could be more precise when tracking objects in motion. Quote

By all means open the profession to them, but don't ever promote them because they are female. Promote them because they did an outstanding job calling balls and strikes in high school and then college and then the minor leagues and proved themselves worthy of each advancement along the way.
