kilroy69 Posted June 24 Posted June 24 I am not concerned about dying. I should not be this old anyway. No way my early days should have lead up to my life now. I am more concerned about WHEN I die. What age. My dad is 72 an he is on his way out now. If I can get to 72. I will be happy. My primary concern is that I want to live long enough to get my son into his career and kid years before I go. But we really don't know how we'll handle it until we are there, you know? When I kneel upon entering church, I say something like the following prayer: "Lord, if it be your will, please lift this burden from me. But if not, please give me the courage to die with dignity. When you get to know someone, the eagerness to see them euthanized really dries up. Respectable Geek Club members aren't the target demographic. I was hoping to go after the shrieking 30/40 something insane, frothing at the mouth, 250 pound female population. We don't have any of those around here. I'm supposed to like this job, you're making me feel bad. I'm going to have to refer you; I think seafoam might not have the reservations I have. Quote

I wouldn’t call it afraid of dying, but you obviously are aware that you’re closer to the end than the beginning. The thoughts that it could happen at any time definitely kick in though and every little Tweak or pain or something you kind of wonder if it’s something else. But oddly, there’s a ton of contentment that comes with all of it. That’s kind of hard to explain. Like I don’t feel like I have to do anything else. I jokingly say I’ve only got one thing left to do and that’s walk three girls down an aisle, but it’s really kind of true. Past that? I’m gonna probably be too old to really do anything with grandkids. Afraid? I guess a little. I worry about it being painful. I worry about my kids finding me, but I don’t worry about being done. I'm mostly done but I need to see how the kids' stories turns out and meet my grandkids. At present, my oldest seems stubbornly useless in that regard. Quote

Strike Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Part of my wants to post the tough guy answer, that being the lyrics to a great song called "Heavy Fuel" by Dire Straits: Quote When my ugly big car won't a-climb this hill I'll write a suicide note on a hundred dollar bill But on a more realistic level, I'm not afraid of dying but I'm not hoping it happens any time soon. I still have things I want to do. I've gotten in to better shape over the last 5 years and, knock on wood, haven't had any major debilitating health issues up to this point and I'm about to turn 60 years old. So, health permitting, I'd love to spend a lot of time flying over the next 10-20 years, see the Broncos win a few more SB's, and spend some quality time with family and friends before I go. All that being said, I am at a point where I'd say if I DID go tomorrow I'd be content with the life I've lived. As has been noted/alluded to I'm probably more concerned with how I go. I don't want it to be some long, drawn out thing where I'm stuck in a bed for a year or more. When it's time, it's time. 1 Quote

Mark Davis Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Oddly, I think for me it depends. I don't fear sudden death. Had a gun drawn on me once, I was oddly calm and didn't understand it after. But seeing my mom battle for years against cancer, that kind of thing would definitely shake me. Hoping I have a long road ahead. My dad lived to 98 and my mom made it to 87 even with several rounds of cancer battles over about three decades. Quote

Not to get dark, but I've talked with a few of my friends over the years as we all get older and observe what's going on around us, and several of us have "plans." We are not suicidal or hoping to die, we just have thought about ways to go out on our own terms if it comes to that. I live in MN. All I need to do is wait till January and take a nap outdoors. Or turn on the car and close the garage door. I'm far less scared of dying than I am of living for years in a debilitated state, or becoming a burden on my kids, or no longer finding joy in life. I think euthanasia should be legal in the US, but I'm guessing I'm in the minority. Fortunately for you (though maybe not many others here) it seems like I've got a good amount of time left. I'm in good health, no chronic pain, and pretty active. Quote

cyclone24 Posted June 25 Posted June 25 I think it’s the awareness of it happening. That’s the most scary for me anyway. Like when my dad went, we had to send him to hospice. And I always wondered does he understand he’s going to hospice and that you don’t typically walk out of hospice? Like there’s almost an understanding that you’re basically being sent to die. That scares me more than anything. Quote
