At the time it was the largest retailer of liquor in America by volume of sales. it was near the older neighborhoods of Milwaukee and also fairly close to some large shift work plants where the shift workers would come after work. It was also across from the Welfare office and when checks would be given out there folks would come immediately into the bar. They would get their checks cashed and then get their 40 cent shot and a beer (yes 40 cents, small shots, rail whisky and 7 ounces of Schlitz). They would then line up at the package goods registers to get their supplies. I was asked to work there occassionally as a fill in. The first day I was there my first customer was a large African American man. He tells me he wants a carton of smokes and a six pack. I asked him what brands. He looked at my buddy and said would you tell this suburban cracker what I want. (I was a rural cracker but he sterotyped me) My buddy said he wants Kools and Colt 45. He was correct. They had a good laugh at my ignorance. That deciphering of his order was in fact correct for maybe a hundred more like orders that day. Quote
