seafoam1 Posted July 15 Posted July 15 From 2009. It has a bit of fear mongering, then just lays out the facts. ...the Earth does and will do what it has always done.. Set your scared asses aside, and accept this planet for what it is. Stop being scared and go out and live your lives. 180 years ago, most scientists believed that Earth had been steadily cooling since it was formed. When Louis Agassiz presented the concept of a Great Ice Age to the Swiss Society of Natural Sciences in 1837, his suggestion that the planet had turned colder and then warmed up again was met with skepticism and even hostility, triggering years of fierce scientific debate before the idea was accepted. Exactly why our planet occasionally cools down has taken more than a century to work out. Now we know that cyclic gravitational tugs from Jupiter and Saturn periodically elongate Earth’s orbit, and this effect combines from time to time with slow changes in the direction and degree of Earth’s tilt that are caused by the gravity of our large moon. Consequently, summer sunlight around the poles is reduced, and high-latitude regions such as Alaska, northern Canada, and Siberia turn cold enough to preserve snow year-round. This constant snow cover reflects a great deal of sunlight, cooling things down even more, and a new ice age begins. Naturally, this process does not occur with anything like the speed portrayed in the movie The Day After Tomorrow, but geological and other evidence shows that it’s happened at least four times. With so much attention focused on global warming, this chilly prospect has been all but forgotten. Given how catastrophic another ice age could be, one might be tempted to ask whether a human-caused increase in atmospheric and ocean temperatures will actually be a boon. There’s little question that global warming is happening. Climate data show that Earth’s average temperature has risen at least 0.7 oC (1.3 oF) over the 20th century. Temperature increases over the 21st century will probably be two and a half to five times as large, because greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide allow sunlight to penetrate the atmosphere but make it harder for outgoing infrared radiation to escape. What’s more, just as carbonated soda fizzes when it warms up, warmer temperatures cause the ocean to release carbon dioxide taken up during colder periods. Analyses of air trapped in glacial ice over the last 800,000 years show that atmospheric carbon dioxide generally ranged between 200 and 300 parts per million by volume (ppmv); increases in these levels were slightly preceded by increases in temperature caused by natural orbital shifts. During this period, global temperature varied by about 12 oC. Now, carbon levels are approaching 400 ppmv as the burning of fossil fuels pumps more and more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Even if the rate of growth could be moderated enough to stabilize levels at about 550 ppmv, average temperatures might well rise by about 5 oC–with devastating effects for us earthlings, such as rising sea levels and dramatic changes in weather patterns. But even that warming will not stave off the eventual return of huge glaciers, because ice ages last for millennia and fossil fuels will not.In about 300 years, all available fossil fuels may well have been consumed.Over the following centuries, excess carbon dioxide will naturally dissolve into the oceans or get trapped by the formation of carbonate minerals. Such processes won’t be offset by the industrial emissions we see today, and atmospheric carbon dioxide will slowly decline toward preindustrial levels. In about 2,000 years, when the types of planetary motions that can induce polar cooling start to coincide again, the current warming trend will be a distant memory. Quote

FrancieFootball Posted July 15 Posted July 15 Quote Arctic and Antarctic ice cores prove global warming is real by showing that modern atmospheric CO₂ and methane levels are unprecedented in the last 800,000+ years. Trapped ancient air bubbles and isotopes in the ice confirm that greenhouse gases dictate Earth's temperature. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6] Ice core analysis from the Arctic (such as Greenland) and Antarctica provides undeniable empirical evidence of human-caused climate change through the following specific mechanisms: [1, 2] Unprecedented Greenhouse Gas Levels: By extracting and crushing ancient ice, scientists directly sample the air trapped centuries ago. Data proves that current CO₂ levels have surged to over 420 parts per million (ppm), vastly exceeding the natural 180 to 300 ppm range that persisted for at least the past 800,000 years. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] Direct Correlation to Temperatures: Isotopic analysis of water molecules in the ice cores—specifically ratios of heavy-to-light oxygen and hydrogen—acts as a thermometer. This historical proxy data proves that temperatures and greenhouse gas concentrations track each other perfectly: when CO₂ levels rose naturally in the past, temperatures followed. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] Unnatural Rate of Change: While Earth's climate has historically fluctuated between ice ages and warm periods, ice core chronologies show that modern warming is unfolding roughly 10 times faster than natural post-ice-age recovery rates. [1, 2] You can explore these datasets, historical records, and climate indicators directly using MAGAs can't comprehend that a mankind-created enormous C02 surge could cause climate change. Well, we have core samples to prove it, and 99.9 percent of climatologists agree. Yet MAGAs find that one whack job and disregard an overwhelming volume of evidence that proves otherwise. All this to fit their political paradigm instead of a belief based in facts and undeniable evidence. Weeeee!!!! Quote

Nature always finds ways to bring things into balance. it is only a matter of time. That said, the earth has been heating and cooling for longer than we can measure things. and we are coming out of an ice age. how do we know we arent returning to the natural state of the planet? history has shown that we have actually been substantially warmer in the past. the constant changing climate is likely one of the factors that drives evolution. each time the world changes, those that live in it need to adapt. that is the way of things. some in politics (and some environmentalists) want to turn back the clock. this is not realistic. the rule of evolution is adapt or die. we need to adapt to the new realities. not try to stop it from happening. sure, you can argue that fossil fuels contribute to this and to some degree maybe they do. but this is the direction we have already been headed. maybe this sped up the process a little. but we will at one point run out of fossil fuels and will be using other methods to generate power. the smarter move is to not try to defy nature on a global scale. I suspect that is a battle we cannot win. this doesnt make me anti pollution. there is nothing wrong with wanting to breathe clean air. but the goals we set should be easily achievable. and instead of pumping a lot of money into existing technology, we need to pump money into R&D. I am convinced that the solution is in better technology. not solar panels. (at least not the ones we use today) as this technology gets better I suspect we will be able to minimize how much we affect the climate change. but we need to be patient. Rome wasnt built in a day and neither was the Earth. Quote

The ice age will be one that will come no matter what humans do today or tomorrow. All we can do it try to sustain ourselves like you said. Adapt the best we can and move on until this planet either kills us or the sun swallows us up as it will eventually will do. Liberals simply are fear mongers who want to gain more money and power by being that way. Liberals are really stupid in general. And they are so dumb they don't think we normals see through them. Rome wasnt built in a day and neither was the Earth. My thoughts. The earth being hotter in the past isn’t really important because there wasn’t 8 billion people on it. That the planet is warming so quickly is the issue as it causes problems due to the amount of people that now live. Fossil Fuels absolutely contribute. Didn’t think that was in question. Yes the planet will do whatever it wants. Yes technology will be the answer. Quote
