So, I go to this new poker room

Recommended Posts

Not really new, just a different casino. But they have these new tournaments with $500 added, so they are losing money on these tournaments to get people in the door. Course I fell for that hook, line and sinker.

So, it's 5 times the distance from my local casino, like 30 minute drive at rush hour. Was not as bad as I thought. I'm driving my Mom's Miata with the top down. Chuckah-Chuckah! Oh yeah! Beautiful! I have just the key in my pocket.

I go in, and cause I heard you hafta get there early to register, fills at 50, and I am one of the first to register. I coulda gotten there a half hour later and still got a seat. So, I had some time to kill. I thought about playing cash, but I am not really a limit player, and they only have 4-8 limit and Omaha. So, I go get a drink, and they have video poker at the bar. Drink cost me $25. Then I see a sign that says "3 deck blackjack". I sit down and of course as soon as the count gets good, it's time for a new shoe and I gotta start all over. So, not much of a count to be had, early in the shoe, but I Martingaled a bet, and all of a sudden I was down another $95. No more money to lose, cause I didnt bring much to play this $35 tournament. Still had like 45 minuts to kill that went by amazingly slowly. The place is loud and obnoxious. I even went outside for awhile because it was annoying. There was some slot tournament going on. Finally the tournament starts. There are a few people there that recognize me, but for the most part, these are all new players to me.

Why is it always me that has some donkey that just goes after me right outta the gate? I saw this guy was raising a lot, and then folding when someone bet the dry flop, so I knew he was raising light. I was up to 3000 from a starting stack of 2000 and he was down to like 1700 and the blinds were 50/100 and from middle position he raised to 350. I have A,6 in the BB, folds to me and I call.

Heads up, flop comes 7,8,9 and I am expecting him to bet, but he open shoves. My read on him is that he is weak. I am open ended, even if he has KK I have an over. I call. He nods like in a "you got me" kinda way and turns over K, 10. He's on a draw, too. I am actually a 2-1 favorite. Course the jack falls right on the turn, and I know I am drawing dead but I don't respond, and a 6 falls on the river. The dealer is looking at his cards, and looking at my cards, and someone says, "Pair of sixes." and points at my cards, and I said, "No, he's got a straight." to which the player responsds, "Oh yeah, 6,7,8,9, 10.", still unaware that he hit it on the turn to the jack.

A couple hands later I got AQ and shoved. Same guy calls me, with K9h. Of course the K high flops, but I got lucky and hit an A on the turn. Still, I shoulda already eliminated this guy, I was back to like $2k after that. Shoulda had all his chips and been over 4k. Then of course he donks off all his chips to one of the better players at the table, also a guy with a bluffy image, but seems to be playing pretty solid. I call those bad aggressive players "sprinklers". Seems they always get lucky against me and then distribute my chips to the better players at the table.

Then I get raised by the SB in my BB and I call with Q8s and the flop comes Js, 5s, 9h. Preflop raiser shoves. I call with my double draw. Of course he has aces, and I can't win a flip. He has me covered by like 50.

But wait ... There's more ...

I walk out of the casino, I have only been to once before, confused about where I parked and I am wandering around in the parking lot when I realize, I don't have the key. I have my wallet, my phone ... everything I left the house with, but the key. I am praying I was distracted putting up the top and left it in the car, but when I finally find it, nope.

So, I begin retracing my steps. I left out that I ate a slice of pizza when I first got there, so I go to check there first, then the bar, then I go back to the blackjack table. I ask the guys sitting there, "Anyone find a key?" and one guy says yeah, and he turned it into the pit boss, and his name was Edward. So, I am walking around this roped off bank of blackjack tables, trying to get the floors attention, and they are ignoring me, and finally I get one guys attention, and he says, "Edward, oh, he's on break". but he directs me to lost and found, and they have the key. I give him my drivers license, and he hasta write all that stuff down before he gives me the key, and I left.

Yeah, totally gonna go back.

Oh yeah, I heard an ad on the radio that says they "pre-load" your card with rewards. "At the other casino, you hafta lose first.." ... yeah that's a bunch of BS. At the end of the day, down $150, I had earned 1 cent in comp money. The blackjack dealer was confusing about when to offer insurance, and even "oops" turned over blackjack after another player had got to 20. She hit 3 blackjacks to my none.

It's a horrible casino, and it's farther away and not as nice as the one near me but ... like George Clooney says about the Flemish Cap, in A Perfect Storm:

... Because that's where the fish are.
