Friday night poker thread

Recommended Posts

So, after Wednesdays bad outing at the new place, I decide to go back to my old place for Friday night. Friday nights are good nights. It's drawings night, so if you get a full house or better, you get a ticket for the drawing, each hour it's $200. I have no tickets in there, since I have not been around for a couple weeks. I'm not grinding hours, so ... I am only there to win money. Got some bills. As soon as I show up, the dealer that always asks me about FF sees me and wants to ask me about FF. "Where you been? On vacation?" He says, and I responded, "Yeah, kinda." We chat for a bit. He will take his break to talk to me for 5 minutes about FF. I know this because he is constantly checking his watch when we talk. This time though, he geniuinely just wanted to ask how my teams were doing, and not for any sleepers I had.

Anyway, so they call a new 1/2 table and I take the 9 seat, so I am in late position. It's a good table. A couple guys at the table know me, but there's at least one total newbie at the table, but she only bought in for $75. I win about $50 pretty quickly when a seat opens at 1/3. That's why I am here, for the big game. No 2/5 tonight. Here's the good news, there are at least 5 players that I have played with before, that I know I have an advantage on. The bad news is there's 2 more that might have an advantage on me, and I got one on each side, pretty quickly.

This one guy, I have played with before, and he thinks he's really good. He made big thing tonight about folding bottom set to a $50 bet in the flop. I think it was all Hollywooding. For 10 minutes he was going on about it. His Mom was there and she was like "I will bet $25k he had a set of fours." She's one of the fish, but I couldn't catch her, I did catch him. I flopped top pair and he flopped a flush draw. I bet, he called. Turn put a third 4 on board, and I checked my boat. He checked. River 7 gave him a lesser full house and he called my $15 value bet. Amother hand I chopped when one guy, prolly the best player at the table, tilt shoved into me and another guy who both had the nuts on the river. So I had about $350 on the table when this hand happened:

Earlier I raised pre with Q9 of diamonds and then had to fold when I missed the flop, so this time I limped in with Q9 of clubs and we go to the flop. Flop comes Qs, 10c, 7s and this LAG guy who looks like a redneck but is actually a very good player bets the flop. $25, about what's in the pot. I call. Turn is the 8 of clubs. Now I have top pair, flush draw, open ended straight draw. The guy bets $25 and I raise $75. He tanks.

I sit there, shuffling my chips. Occasionally I glance at the board and look at a specific card, as a false tell, I have a huge hand here. I know to some it might seem like I just have a pair of queens, but I want to get it all in here, even if he has 2 red aces. So, I am just ignoring him, he realises pretty quick I am not gonna answer any questions. I sit there shuffling my chips. Now, against a bad player, one that maybe was trying to get a read on me, I might swallow, or mess up shuffling the chips.. a false tell trying to get them to call, but this guy is too smart for that, so I just keep on sitting there shuffling my chips. "I think you are bluffing. Let's go." as he shoves all in and I snap call. He shows 5,8, and a brick river does not make my straight or flush, but top pair is good. Wow. After that hand I was up to like 600, but I was sure I had the guy covered before the hand, he had less than 300 and I had more than 300 ... dealer focked up the count and gave him some money back. Wasn't enough to complain about, but it was enough for me to give the dealer a $2 tip instead of a $5 tip and not say anything. I am not gonna request going to the cameras over $10 and this guy chipped up, full buy in, $300 anyway, and he ran that back up to $600 pretty quick. Guy is super aggressive and often had 2 pair with weird hands like Q6. I try and stay out of his way. He hasn't learned that he should stay out of mine as well yet, apparently.

So, instead of me getting money from the fish at the table I ended up chopping the best guys stack, with another guy who is a rock. And then I got the toughest guy at the table to shove at me with like 4 outs.

I started calling raises a little light, and got myself into some bad spots. Got down to $400 and cashed out.

Book a win. Pay my bills.

Made almost $100 an hour.

We all know each other and we discussed the hand afterwards .. He got a read on me. He thought I was trying to act strong, when I really was strong, but I was not sure top pair was good. So, somehow he saw something that made him hero call. I double reverese telled him.

My re-raise was a semi-bluff ... with top pair and a world of outs if he had a big pair or had me outicked with KQ and a club blocker. He focked up, if he thought he could make me fold there.

Oh yeah, the hand I chopped with the rock, we both had J9 off. After the hand he said, "I thought you didn't play cards that bad." and I chuckled. "I usually don't ... but I'm on a heater." that led me to lose $200 profit in about an hour, but at least I left up.

Side story:

I know that when I drink, it lowers my inhibitions. I decided to have a couple rum and cokes while I was playing tonight. I arrived fully rested and sober, though after eating a small supper. Perfectly tuned for playing poker. 3 drinks is my max, I will not play poker if I have had more than 3.

So, I am at the bar during a cig break, and I buy a rum and coke, and the bartender says, "It's on her." as I fumble with my wallet, having no singles for a tip. I look over, and it's this Asian chick I assume is a hooker, I have seen her around, but there are lots of Asian chicks in a casino, even in Arizona. I forget which one she is, but I always say hello to her when I see her. She is with some nasty looking crack head friend. I think ... and I may have her confused with a different person, she is the wife of one of the dealers. She likes to drink and play slots.

So, about 45 minutes later, confident that I would not lose on the night, I went back to the bar for my 2nd drink. She was still there, with her skanky friend. Look ... I was a good looking guy when I was younger, got all the strange I am ever gonna want. I got no interest in these girls. But I am nice to people, so I go back over there, buy her a drink. My turn. I still don't have change, but i carry crisp 100 dollar bills with the blue line in them. I got 2 when I cashed out tonight that don't have the line, so that's some I am gonna hafta use for sure as buy ins. I cycle those out of my bankroll. So I put the hundred on the bar, and the bartender goes to check it, and the Asian chick says, "No, give it to me.." and she pulls out a ham sammitch of 20's and peels off five. "I didn't test it yet, says the bartender." and she says, "it's OK, I trust him." I showed her the 2 more I had in my wallet, "I only have the ones with the blue line in them."

Then I went back and played more poker. I dunno what her deal is, but I don't think she has a crush on just me, if ya know what I mean. She's not bad looking but ... I dunno. It's hard to beat my left hand that has several years of experience and knows exactly how I like it.

you got that guy good in that hand with the $15 river bet. few more of those and you'd have made an extra $45.

love the story about the $100s. i prefer the new ones too and, if i can, i buy in for the old ones. don't ask me why. i have no freakin' idea. just think they might be harder to counterfeit. maybe not.

I have a long history as a print designer. When I taught graphic design, it was digital prepress, I coulda been counterfeiting for years, instead I went into publishing and advertising.

The new bills, with the blue stripe ... It would be too expensive to reproduce. In the past 15 years, the govt has made some seriously legit, bad ass moves, printed on paper, and called it money. Can't be duplicated. That's why old bills, when I take them in, go right back out. If they are fake, I can tell the Secret Service exactly how I aquired them.

I have no patience for hundos without the blue stripe these days.

And funny enough, a hundred to me these days, seems like a $20 was 15 years ago.

That's porbsbly my own perspective as a kid to an adult. When I was 21 ... if I had $20, I was going to the bar.

Mostly, I got other guys at the bar to buy my drinks or me. Some nights I'd finish with that same $20 bill.

It was pool, back then. 8 ball. I'd make some shots that would put the fear of God into ya, because I could do the geometry in my head. "Ok, the cue is gonna go off the rail, kiss the 7 ball, and then sink my stripe in the corner. You allow me to attempt that shot? I believe I called it." ... or "can I hop" nobody ever said no .... It was easy. Poker back then .... compared to now ... Like a whole different world. Players are much more savy.

The best pool player I ever met, witnessed this.

I was playing him. Tournament rules, no hops, no BS. He left me with no shot. Well, there was one way I thought I could make it, but I knew the spin on the cue ball would cause it to double kiss. Now, off the rail, combo, etc ... normal stuff you hear in a game of pool, you never hear "double kiss." It's a foul, slop ball, unless I call it. My opponennt allowed it, and I did it.

He was blown away. "Never seen anyone call a double kiss before." He was talking about it for days. That's how I roll. I play defense, and I can make amazing shots that you can't even imagine. If you can't also make amazing shots ... you better have a good defense.
