  1. I just finished the new Guillermo Del Toro / Chuck Hogan vampire book called The Strain. Very, very good read. It's set up to be a trilogy. Lots of action and blood starting on page 1 and it never lets up. I'd definitely recommend that one. The main character is a hotshot from the CDC and the vampirism outbreak is treated more like a vicious viral outbreak than dramatic dudes running around in capes, seducing women.

Also, Patient Zero by Jonathon Maberry is an excellent zombie read. Maberry writes it from a spec ops military perspective and terrorists are responsible for the zombie outbreak. Massive action/gore fest ensues.

You mentioned Glen Cook for the PI Garrett series by I much prefer the Black Company fantasy series from him. The first 6 books have been re-released into 2 large paperbacks. I'm still waiting for the last 3 books of the series to be re-released. It's kind of Tolkein-esque with a evil overlord trying to free himself and conquer the land but that's where the similarity ends. There's still magic and wizardry (similar to Jordan) but I'd classify the books as military fantasy novels as the main characters are part of a mercenary band of warriors.

  2. Any chance the officially change it later?

FWIW, I saw on ESPN highlights that the score will not officially change because of something with the ranking of points given up is 7th on the list of playoff tie-breakers...or something like that. I wasn't really paying attention to the detail because my teams aren't affected, but I'm sure they said it was definitely not going to be changed.

  3. If healthy, he's definitely worth a shot. I don't know of many teams that can truly stop the running game, so his health is really the determining factor. He's been banged up a lot this season. But if he looks 100%, he's worth a play no matter the opponent. In the 5 games he's been mostly healthy for, he's averaging 4 receptions, 74 yards, and .8 TDs. Not a bad average for a #3 or even a #2.

  4. Increase tax on Exxon? There goes the gas price again.

Not as a comment on whether or not I agree with the whole Obama tax philosophy, but didn't I just see Exxon pull in a profit of $15 BILLION in one quarter?? Companies making profit is obviously a good thing, but $15b worth of profit in 3 months? That's an obscene amount of money to be making off a product that is almost a necessity. Call me a socialist, but I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more government oversight here. I think they have room for paying a little more in tax and not immediately passing it on to the consumer.

  5. Schaub has gotten it going and was the #8 ranked QB (in my standard scoring league) prior to this game after a horrible start to the season, was facing Cinci, and has AJ on a tear to throw to...not sure why anyone would not expect a strong game from him today. That was a no brainer start...he should have started over every other QB in the league today, except maybe Brees.

  6. As I stated already, I benched Avery this week.

Here's a crazy question I never thought I'd be asking 2 weeks ago: Who do I bench out of these 3 Wrs next week so I can start Avery vs. AZ?

    Wayne vs NE

    R. White vs OAK

    Marshall vs MIA

You don't really have to answer, just wanted to tell you my situation. Im sure there are plenty others in a same type boat.

I'd sit Wayne because the NE CB is a lock down CB...or so I've heard.

  7. Not that you get points for 'almost' catching TDs, but Henne threw to Fasano in the end zone near the end of the game and the play resulted in defensive pass interference. So it was nice to see that Henne looked his way when he got into the red zone.

Miami's offense is going to be completely unpredictable all season but I think Fasano will have a few more nice days in him...along with a bunch of goose eggs like yesterday. If you don't have one of the top 7-8 TEs, I don't see anything wrong with taking a chance on him. Like someone said above, a TE can be a bad and/or rookie QB's best friend.

  8. Fisher is a smart coach..

Small/quick defenses will see a lot of Lendale White

Big/slower defenses (like the Jags) will see a lot of Chris Johnson..

    Play accordingly...

    Agree completely.

I think both will be good plays each week. Titans run the ball like mofos so there will be plenty of carries for each of them.

  9. Would you start a TE at flex over a WR1? I've been contemplating this as i have 3 available options (Ted Ginn Jr., Javon Walker, and Owen Daniels) for one flex slot. In what circumstances would you start a TE like Owned Daniels over two starting WRs? This has been bugging me all day so your opinions are much appreciated.

I would start a TE like Owen Daniels under the circumstances that my WRs were Ted Ginn Jr. and Javon Walker.

  10. Like DaWeffa said, Oyamel and Rosa Mexicano are both very good authentic Mexican joints. Oyamel is probably my 2nd favorite restaurant here in DC. Oyamel rocks because it's tapas style, letting you try out a bunch of different items. My favorite restaurant is Filomena, an Italian restaurant in Georgetown. Ambiance is nice, the portions are ginormous, and the price is not all that bad. Plus, you can watch an old lady make the pasta in the front window before you go inside.

After dinner, you can walk a block down the hill and stop for drinks in the Degrees bar at the Ritz-Carlton, Georgetown hotel. Very swanky and it being a Fri/Sat night, it should be a cool crowd. I wouldn't want to get wrecked there as the martinis are around $14 each, but for an after dinner drink or two, it's very cool.

  11. The only way to look at this is to project out the 2nd round and see who you think will be there for those draft slots. If you're dying to get someone in the 2nd that you don't think will be there if you draft from the 4 spot, take the 7th spot...if everyone looks the same to you there, take the 4th spot.

And besides, it's a 10 team league. Drafting from the 4 or 7 should not be an issue unless you are insanely bored.

  12. If anyone is still doubting picking a RB#1 in the first round, please check out the #6 picks team here......IMHO no shot

At 6 pts per passing TD, there's not a single thing wrong with picking Brady at #6.

People need to stop with the whole "you HAVE to have a RB in the 1st or your team will suck" mindset. If the value at your pick is a RB, take the RB...if it's a QB, take the QB. Don't force yourself into a strategy that has you overpaying.

However, following that up with McGahee in the 2nd is not something I would advise. That's where his team goes south - not with the Brady pick.

  13. I don't see any difference in Jackson this preseason as opposed to preseason last year when many people were looking at 1800+ combined and 12 TDs. He's healthy, the OL is healthy, and he's happy with a new contract. If you're illogically scared of his getting injured again this season, whatever, but I really don't see much of a debate between Jackson and Addai (especially now with Rhodes back). SJax is being undervalued right now.

I just got him at #6 in my draft last night and was ecstatic. (1 LT/2 AP/3 Westbrook/4 Brady/5 Addai/6 SJax)

  14. Good call on Children of the Corn. And is there a remake of The Shining? Sh1t I hope not.

There was a made-for-TV miniseries remake of The Shining done around 10 years ago that was very good. Stephen King was bent about how the Kubrick movie strayed way too far from the book (even if it was a kickass scary movie) so he assisted in the mini-series which basically ported the book to screen line by line. It's definitely worth your time if you like the book.

  15. I think they're both just about equal at this point. Microsoft has seemingly fixed whatever was causing the 360s to get the red ring of death and the server problems have been addressed and fixed (most were due to a huge influx of Xmas players). There are a couple games that are exclusive to each that might make a difference to you (Warhawk/Resistance for PS3 and Mass Effect/Bioshock for 360), but personally, 95% of games are available to both consoles so that wasn't a selling point for me. I do like the Xbox Live Arcade - some of those games are quite fun.

I think everything really boils down to whether or not you want to spend the extra money for PS3 and get the blueray drive. If you're like me and don't care about blueray, just go with the 360.

  16. I really don't hate obama. I just think that he has wayy too little experiance to be the president. I would say that I dislike hillary WAYYY more than I dislike obama. But to be honest I really am not that impressed with any of the dems this year. I just think they are trying to force change on the american public and it is going to show that we are not ready for it.

I just don't see the "not enough experience" argument. Anybody running for president in these times has basically been groomed for the position since elementary school. And from everything I've read, there really isn't any 'experience' that helps with being president. Obama has been around Washington long enough that he knows all the ins and outs. Besides, I don't really want a candidate with a LOT of experience...to me, that just means they are more ingrained with the status quo and special interests have a deeper hold. Finally, look at two of the greatest presidents in recent times - JFK and Reagan. Neither one had much "experience" prior to entering office.

BTW, how's the Jackson area doing? I spent the first 20 some years of my life in Chelsea and another 5 or so in Ann Arbor before moving to the DC area.
