Disagree on the Biden stance being "dumber". Biden stance was strong, Trump stance is weak. Maybe the correct answer would have been a middle ground. Our response to the invasion was strong. We organized a NATO coalition to provide hundreds of billions of dollars in military aid which stopped the Russian invasion. We sanctioned the crap out of Russia to the point where they might not have much solvency left as a country. I believe that is why Trump is pushing so hard for Zelensky to surrender now, because Putin has told him to do it quick and lift the sanctions or Russia could collapse. It's pretty fundamental to think that the country getting invaded gets to decide if they accept a ceasefire or not. To date their stance has been to leave. That might not change. Likely what happens now is Putin gets to keep all the territory they currently own plus likely more. He wants Kiev badly. Ceasefire. Sanctions are lifted. NATO guarantees not to accept Ukraine. Minimal peacekeeping force. 6 months later US withdraws from NATO. 6 months after that, Russia finishes the job and takes the rest of Ukraine uniting it with Russia.

Typo, Putin was waiting for the US to abandon NATO. Something that was and is likely during a second Trump term. A Ukraine invasion without NATO would have likely been an easy victory. Since trump lost in 2020, Putin lost his chance. Maybe he thought Biden would have a weak response like Obama and decided to give it a shot. It's really up to Ukraine to decide what is best for them, not us. What's in it for us anyway? I know Trump is trying to get their rare earth minerals but if he truly just doesn't want to spend the money then he just walks away. Biden took a harder stance with Putin than Trump. That much is clear.

Putin thought he could get Ukraine without going to war with Trump. Without covid he was probably right given how Trump is giving him Ukraine now. The upside of beating Russia in Ukraine is to end Russian aggression against the west. What needs to be done to end the war is Russia needs to leave Ukraine. If they refuse then fight on.
