As Los Angeles Unified School District students returned to class on Aug. 14 for the 2025-2026 school year, the first day of school for many was not marked by the usual excitable anticipation. Instead, worry and anxiety were palpable as students returned to the classroom after a summer marked by the increased presence of ICE in Los Angeles. Out of LAUSD’s 540,000 students, nearly 30,000 are immigrants, with one in every four being undocumented. On the same morning, masked federal agents bombarded Little Tokyo, near Governor Gavin Newsom’s press conference at the Japanese American National Museum, which U.S. Customs and Border Protection official Gregory Bovino described as “conducting roving patrol duties... in Downtown Los Angeles.” Addressing reporters outside of Newsom’s press conference, Mayor Karen Bass condemned the federal government’s actions. “Here we are as Angelenos needing to protect ourselves from our own federal government,” she said. “Today is the first day of school. Our school children should be able to go to school and not worry about getting captured or their parents getting captured before they’re home.”
